Kumo,
My stats are almost exactly the same as yours. I’ve called and believe our letters are coming soon. I don’t know what they will be but I’m pretty sure they aren’t denials since they’re coming so late.

I’m a P Scholar! I read bits and pieces of this thread and I just wanted to say a few things. First of all, the scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis- they don’t just send out the max number of acceptances all at once. Don’t worry if you get wait listed, because I know multiple people who got wait listed but ended up getting the scholarship. If you’re wondering about average stats, I can say that SAT ranges from ~1700 (for students with tons of ECs, APs, and #1 in graduating class rank) to ~2300. Best ACT I’ve heard was 33 I think? Weighted GPAs are almost always above 4.0. Everything is pretty swell so far (housing, food, classes, etc) so consider CSULB whether or not you get the scholarship! Anyway I hope to see some of you next year, hopefully we get some more engineering majors.

edit: Two more things: 1) They love National Merit (Semi)Finalists so it’s a big plus if you’ve got that going for you 2) Over the past few years they’ve been cutting down the # of scholarships: 50+ (not exactly sure) around 5 years ago, down to 50, and 30 this past year. I’ve heard for your class it might be <30 (not to scare anyone)

Congrats swaggg!

thanks power of one! your input was helpful last year

I didn’t know I gave you input last year until I looked back at your old posts. xD

Have you decided where you’ll be attending school next year?

I’m actually finishing up my freshman year at CSULB! haha sorry if any of my previous posts made that unclear

Wow, still no word. Only 12 days left to make a decision as where to spend the next 4 years. I contacted CSULB last week, and they said they were not done yet. Hope I get a notice soon.

Hey guys, I know I may be a tad off topic, but I really need quick advice before the May 1st deadline. I was admitted into the President’s Scholars Program around a week and a half ago, but my dream school has always been UCLA. Would you guys advise me to attend CSULB as a President’s Scholar, or go to UCLA paying around $15,000 a year?

@swaggg- Sorry for some reason I though you were an incoming freshmen. How is your first year going? Are you taking any honors courses? How are your engineering classes?

@Kumo22- I hope you hear soon.

@Jhonny- What’s your major? Is money an issue?

@power - everything is going well. I was in the honors program at first but decided it was too much trouble to fit their GE classes into my schedule (largely because many of the classes I’ve taken/am taking/will take only offer 1-2 sections). So I’m not taking any honors courses. The engineering classes are great, the teachers are very good for the most part.

@Jhonny - It’s really a personal decision. If money is an issue, a full-ride scholarship is hard to argue with. As a P Scholar, you’ll have priority registration (which is absolutely huge). That’s possibly the biggest benefit besides the money, but there are many others. UCLA is a much better research university though. Depends on your major and how big of a deal $ is.

Yeah, well I’m majoring in Physiological Sciences and I want to go into the Sports Medicine field. To be honest, money is an issue. I come from a lower income family with a brother currently attending college. That’s the main reason why I’m considering CSULB, but on the other hand UCLA has always been my dream school and the people that I have talked to over there tell me not to worry about the money and that college is truly an investment. I kind of feel like I would sell myself short by attending CSULB, but I honestly have no clue where I ultimately want to to go. I’m scared that if I attend UCLA I may have a lower GPA than if I would’ve attended CSULB, but at the same time, I feel like would also have a better college experience over there.

@swaggg- Yes, scheduling in honors classes can be difficult with a full load. You should try and squeeze them in. You’ll get to meet lots of cool students. I’m assuming your friends with some Presidential Scholars already though. I’m also glad to hear your engineer classes are going well.

@Jhonny- This is a really, really tough decision. I honestly can’t say which choice to take. There is so much to consider.

How much aid will you receive from UCLA? How much of a financial burden will be placed on you and your family if you do decide to attend UCLA? Do these costs include dorming, textbooks, food, gas, and other living expenses? Are you fine with taking out loans to cover all these costs?

Money is an issue that you have to address now, but you should probably take the future into account. I’m assuming you want to go to medical school for Sports Medicine. You will of course get better grades if you attend CSULB. However with that, be prepared to face subtle discrimination from medical schools which although won’t explicitly state it, look higher on UC students than those coming from CSUs. With that said, at UCLA, it will be harder to get attain straight A’s. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but as a pre-med student, you’ll want to shoot for the best grades as possible-- one of the most important criteria for medical school and that will be easier done at CSULB.

Now money aside, why exactly is UCLA your dream school? Is it because of its name and prestige? Why are you against going to CSULB? Is it because it lacks prestige? What are aspects of attending UCLA that you absolutely won’t have if you attend CSULB? Ask yourself all this.

There is so much aspects to consider, so I feel for you, man. I honestly don’t think you could go wrong with either choice though. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice man I appreciate it. Another idea that just came into mind was going to CSULB to complete my general ed, and then maybe transferring to UCLA after. I’ve heard a lot of people say that transferring from a Cal State to a UC is harder than transferring from a CC to a UC, but I don’t know if that’s true.

Yes, you could always do that, but I heard the same thing. UC’s favor CC students who haven’t had a chance to attend an university, but that isn’t to say it’s impossible to transfer from a CSU. Aren’t you close to be being done with most of your GEs though APs though?

Hopefully being in the President’s Scholars program would give me a better chance to be able to transfer.
Well, what classes exactly constitute general ed in college? I know there’s language, math, social and physical sciences, and history.

Does that mean you’re leaning towards CSULB?

Well depending on which/# APs you passed, about 90%+ of your GEs may be covered (this excludes upper division GE capstones). An oral communication class and an exploration class are two lower division GE classes that can’t be covered through APs. They may be a few more, but those are 2 that come to mind.
