Yeah, I took all my tests with a mechanical pencil this year, as well as SATs and SAT IIs. Most mechanical pencil lead is #2, but there is some that isn't. I think if the lead container says "HB" on it then it's #2...

I used acrylic paint and I still got a 5.

^^^ Heh.

I know I used a mechanical pencil on my ACT, at least, and I got a 33. I think I used it on last year's tests, too, and did fine. If they're unreasonably low, I'd say yeah, ask for a rescore. But I've never heard of mechanical pencil-specific problems with scantrons.

Why does it matter if you use mechanical pencil or not as long as it's #2? I don't remember the proctor saying anything about it...

i always use mechanical pencils, except for the essays. I got a 5 on APUSH

I used mechanical pencils (Pentel--only the best!), and got a 4 and a 5 (pen on the essay(s) of course though!)

I used mechnical pencils on ACT and got a 35. I doubt it's the pencil's fault unless you weren't using no.2

You might find it worth the $$ to get it handscored just in case though.

Maybe you used the lead from the 99cents store.

Blaming the pencil! Wow that's low, just kidding.

I used a mechanical pencil for AP Psych and received a 4.

I used lead from the 99cent store...wait a minute... 89cent store...

I've taken all my SAT, SAT II, and AP tests with mechanical pencil and never had a scoring problem. I don't think it really matters.

took one ap test with mech pencil...............got a 4

I took all my tests with a mechanical pencil, got a 4 on Euro, 5's on APUSH, Calc BC, Chem, Physics B, English Lang/Comp. Very sweet report.

The lead in a #2 pencil is equivalent to HB lead for a mechanical pencil. Lead (actually graphite) for mechanical pencils is available in a variety of hardnesses. The most common is 2H, which is harder than HB. Marks made by 2H lead won't be as black as those made by HB lead. If you like using mechanical pencils and can't find HB lead at Walmart or Staples, look in the yellow pages for an engineering supply store near you. They will carry a variety of leads for mechanical pencils.

my mech pencil broke on physics c and i had to take the remainder of the test with virtually no functioning eraser... that said, i still have great faith in mechanical pencils :)

the type of pencil you use shouldn't matter as long as it has #2 lead. lots of mechanical pencils have #2 lead.

i'm the same as another person that posted here: i've taken every standardized test with a mechanical pencil. actually, i used mechanical pencils all the time. i hate those sucky pieces of wood because i hate sharpening pencils.

Use a click eraser.

I always use mechanical pencils, and I received nothing lower than a 3 on my APs.

I've barely used a regular pencil for ANYTHING school related since freshman year. Wooden pencils seem extremely weird in my hand and annoy me. Whenever I forget my mechanical and have to borrow a regular one, I end up thinking about how much the pencil is bothering me instead of focusing on the test.

I got a 5 and a 4 with mechs... It shouldn't make a difference, unless you use a type of lead that isn't #2... Or you may have just done badly. I felt confident on quite a few tests and end up getting lower scores..
