I’ve been learning Hindustani Classical Music for about 11 years now, but I havent had much experiences in competitions as such because there is not much opportunity here, and my teacher didnt really expose me to that much. But i really have a passion for it, and Im really considering sending in a supplement. I want to apply to Stanford early app. Do you think it would be smart for me to send in a supplement, even tho I’ve only performed at places and only won in 1 competition (2nd place) due to the lack to exposure/opportunities.

Hello Saywah …

Here is some brief advice.
- I assume your grades/SATs/etc match the level of your music, which is why you’re applying to the HYPs and highly selective schools.
- Your resume that you put in the Arts supplement should be a 1-page summary of your highest accomplishements and awards. Don’t list every composition and classical piece you have performed, only the top awards and the piece you played to win that.
- My daughter provided a CD of her All-state scholarship performance along with her Art Supplement. I understand that CD was assessed by a professor that specialized in her area (jazz vocals). The same thing happened at Uof Rochester.
- Her reach school was Columbia, and she was waitlisted there, but her grades and SATs were top 10%, not top 2%. It was a reach school for her but I believe her music supplement is what got her looked at more closely. She did get accepted to UofRochester. Her major is biochemistry, with a minor in music.
- Last but not least, you sound very impressive if you are playing 3 varsity sports and participating in music to the level that you posted. Make sure you application isn’t too watered down that it dilutes the 1 or 2 things you really want the college to know about you.

Good luck!
