Any accepted Psychology Majors out there ? Seems like there's only business, english, or engineering majors.

I was accepted as a psych major. I did some research on majoring in psych and the job outlook looks rough. Hopefully they have some good co-ops for psychology. I originally thought that I would’t change my major, but i’m not sure now…

I’m debating if I should even go b/c the psychology program here isn’t too special or anything. But yeah for now I was actually thinking the exact same thing. I want to change my major b/c my friend who in his 4th year at NEU told me that the co-ops for psychology are weak, so he switched majors. That’s a good idea we should probably both switch majors, how do you go about doing that though? Do we just call the admissions office?

Yeah, people mainly go for business and they have really good co-ops in business, but you can submit a request to change majors through the myneu account. I want to know if it’s possible to do a double major in psychology and business because they’re two separate schools. I really like psychology, maybe if I could combine it with some business aspects it might help… I dunno. What other schools were you thinking of for psychology?

Concerning how to change majors:

I remember I was told when I went there that you can’t cross school double major. I was considering the same thing, but it’s too much work anyway so its ok. I would definitely stick with psychology, but co-ops are hands down the biggest part of NEU and if that’s the case I want to choose a major that will have worthwhile co-ops, so I guess Psychology is out of the question for me. I have a few options with top ranked Psychology Programs, UCLA, Stony Brook, Penn State- University Park, there all in top 30 for Psychology undergraduate programs. I had my heart set on Northeastern, but to be honest if I am paying that much money it needs to be worth it. Their Psychology Program doesn’t even make the top rankings. So either I change my major or attend another university.

Behavioral Neuroscience seems like a fitting alternative. From what I have heard/read, BNS has many aspects of psych included in the curriculum. Check it out and see if you’d be interested.

My D was admitted with an undeclared major. Psych is something she is interested in as well as Women and Gender studies, Sociology and neuroscience. Not happy to hear that the psych dept is weak as I have read that WGS isn’t strong either. We went to the admitted students day in Feb. and were in an excellent classroom presentation by the sociology/anthropology dept. though. Any thoughts on sociology anyone?

I don’t think psychology is a weak department/major. I’m a BNS major, and I’ve only taken a handful of psych courses, but they were generally well taught and the psych majors I know are pretty happy.

As far as co-ops, obviously psych is kind of a “what do you want to do with that?” type major, since it doesn’t have a clear cut career that it feeds into, and that goes for every school. But Co-op is great for trying different things and testing out the waters. I think there’s a good variety of co-ops for psych majors, but because interests of psych majors are so varied, a lot of the posted jobs just may not interest you specifically. ie, someone who wants to study personality isn’t going to want to do autism behavior work, or someone interested in working with depression isn’t going to want to work at a non-profit doing PR kinds of things. But as a psych major, you’re able to try jobs in a lot of different fields (there are some co-op jobs that are open to nearly all majors-- there’s a lot of cross over between the social science jobs), so you’ll have lots of options.

BNS is not a good option unless you want to be a science major. BNS attracts a lot of psych and bio students, and it’s a great major. But, it’s heavy science courseloads with labs, and especially now as they’re revamping the curriculum to be even more science based, you need to be more interested in the “neuroscience” than the “behavioral”.

I was, briefly, an anthropology major, and it really wasn’t for me. I don’t think the department is strong. Sociology, though, is definitely something to consider. I know the Intro to Soc class is supposed to be one of the best classes at NU, and I’ve heard good things about some of the upperlevel soc classes.

Also, I believe you can minor in business. As far as switching, it is hard to switch from college of science or arts into college of business as they’re run separately and business majors rarely transfer out of the college. But really, if you’re interested in more liberal arts, why major in business? Students of all majors can go into business post-graduation, and students of all majors can go onto get MBAs. Personally, I’d rather spend my undergrad learning about things I’m passionate about, rather than being so pre-professional.

Love to read your posts Emily2007-- your positivity is so refreshing; yupi are a voice of reason. As I said in my previous post, the presentation by the sociology dept. was excellent. The profs seemed so excited about their work and teaching and the opportunities at NEU seemed so good. The two students in the presentation were excellent as well (like they’d have students who weren’t happy about NEU) but the whole thing made my D feel better about the school. I went back and looked at the soc/anthro website and it seemed packed with great info and very dynamic.
