Well, we got an envelope today, a small one. Polite rejection letter, 10 applicants to every one spot for class of 2016. Totally shocked at the rejection, but it’s for the best since we were not thrilled with our 2nd campus tour, lack of communication and long wait to hear. On the positive side, DD has been accepted to Merrimack (her 1st choice) and Roger Williams. Still don’t understand the rejection, but I’m sure it’s for a good reason and there is something better in store for her at another college.

The 1 in 10 acceptance stats honestly make me very nervous. Really hope we get something in the mail tomorrow, or we’ll have to wait until after the weekend to find out. Barb, best of luck to your daughter in this very difficult process, but it sounds like her other choices might be a better fit. As for my s, I guess if he gets rejected, he will be extremely disappointed, but on the bright side, it will make his final college decision easier, since right now he’s undecided between 3 great schools, and if Stonehill is out of the picture, he will only have to pick between 2.

Barb, so sorry to hear your son was rejected, but as you said, sometimes things happen for a reason. My D also looked at Merrimack, very nice campus. We have a close friend who went there and liked it very much and is now in dental school. Daughters have lots of friends who went to Roger Williams and were happy there as well. We are happy for the acceptance to Stonehill but seeing that 3 other schools have offered her substantial scholarships it may not be a viable option anymore.

By the way Indy, it’s not a 1 in 10 acceptance rate, it’s 1 spot available for every ten applicants. Stonehill’s acceptance rate is forty-something percent (forget the exact number). Your son still has a good shot!

I still don’t get the rejection letter from Stonehill. Guess I’m taking it harder than my daughter is! The letter did say 1 seat for every 10 applicants, but we’re talking early action here. What will happen with the regular decision applicants? Also, I see on the College Board website for Stonehill’s profile for 2010/2011 stats,

Number of early action applications received: 3,054
Number admitted under early action plan: 2,611
Number enrolled under early action plan: 421

So they send out acceptance letters to 2,611 and only 421 actually enroll?!

I know in my heart Stonehill wasnt her first choice and didn’t seem like it was going to be a good fit, but it still hurts to get the thanks but no thanks letter.

So she’s applied to 5 schools (4 EA, 1 RD), got 2 acceptances and 1 rejection. Still waiting to hear from two more in-state schools, ones a reach and ones a safety, but her heart is set on Merrimack. God will put her where she needs to be.

Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear from Stonehill.

That sounds more reasonable. I originally interpreted Barb’s comment to mean that only 1 of 10 early action applications were offered spots. My s is still very optimistic about his admission chances, but only the mailbox will hold the final truth. I have to say I am shocked by how competitive college admissions has gotten in general. Has to be a result of the common application making it easier for kids to apply to multiple schools. Not like in my day when I filled out each application by hand and everyone only took the SAT once (I hadn’t even heard of the ACT or test prep courses).

Result: Accepted (Yay! it finally came!!)
got some scholarship with presidential scholarship
gpa: 96.2/100
SAT: 1880 - I know… not amazing
Good Ec’s with leadership
Good Essay/Rec’s
Barb: Stonehill has become a very hard school over the years and i have heard that it is starting to move out of the “safety school” region that many people think it is. At my interview at the college this year, my interviewer even said that this year has been the record for all apps they have received and that it will also be the most competitive year for admission. good luck to you daughter in future college decisions as well as her acceptance to merrimack. no shame done though, you gave all you got, and the result is is that is was just not meant to be. good luck!

Big envelope arrived in mail from Stonehill today, but my s won’t be home until late tonight to open it! I originally assumed that meant he got in, but my older daughter told me sometimes you also get big envelopes from schools if you are deferred, so still waiting but cautiously optimistic…

Indy, I’m sure it’s an acceptance. The one my D got had a white file folder in it, so if it feels like that, then that’s it. I’ve been through the college process before and I’ve never heard of a big rejection letter lol.

Thanks Westie - I think it is an acceptance too. So I guess I now have to wonder if he got any scholarship money or not. Hopefully he gets home and opens it before I go to bed…

@ westie- SAT CR/M- 1190 CR/M/W-1810
GPA 92.74 on a 100 scale, i think that’s around a 3.7 on a GPA scale but don’t know for sure…
extracurriculars- about 150 hrs of community service throughout h.s., varsity sport, dance, newspaper editor, Key club( service club), habitat for humanity

I wasn’t sure I would get into Stonehill given that I was deferred early from Providence and i thought Providence was easier to get into… I think I saw on another thread that your D was as well and if you don’t mind telling me her stats because I am wondering about my chances of getting in given PC is my first choice! I’ve been accepted to siena as well and it seems we’ve applied to many of the same schools
Congrats to your D on her acceptances!

Thanks University for the info. D’s stats are just about identical to yours, GPA - 3.7, SAT - 1820, ACT -27. NHS, competitive dancer, violin, French club, lots of volunteering thru church and dance. No scholarship from Stonehill, which is frustrating given that she received sizeable ones from 3 other schools of approx. same caliber. Did you get anything from Siena? They told her she did but will find out amount later.

I’m very surprised she didn’t receive a scholarship; maybe scholarship will come at a later date at Stonehill? I would definitely call and inquire. As for Siena, I heard about my acceptance there around early November and heard of my merit scholarship a month later. I received $9,500 there, I am sure your daughter will receive scholarship as well. Good luck to you both with the rest of this process, I know it’s very stressful!

thanks westie! hope everyone else is doing well with their acceptances and i hope stonehill is being generous to all who have been accepted. and westie, i think its definitely worth a shot to contact stonehill, it can’t hurt. and if you don’t get a lot of scholarship/any out of them and you D is still considering stonehill, i would schedule an appointment with the financial aid office, explain your circumstances. it might help (advice from my counselor)
congrats nora and university! good luck to your S Indy
and good luck to whiteteamgirl with loyola!
