i guess we're doomed

why? ...17charfoyrsix

Hello there, guys -

I actually thought a little about appealing to Berkeley. I got into UCSD and posted another thread about how I can't decide whether to go to UCSD or not (I want to be an English major and know Berkeley's #1 in the country for public universities). I also didn't apply to any other UCs.

I also talked about how my friend, who was practically FORCING ME to go to Berkeley, passed away just a week ago, and now I feel like I want to do what she wanted me to, even though it still feels weird to go where she died. I haven't told her family that I got rejected yet, and I'm sure that if they knew about the appeals process, they would immediately try to figure out a way to get me in because they knew how much she wanted me to go lol =]

So, I'm still not sure. What do you guys think? Is it worth going through the appeals for a school in an area I'm not so familiar with, or just go to UCSD (where I'm not so sure about the Lit department).

Thanks - Camille

I thought about appealing, even though it could hardly make a difference until I thought about this:
Berkeley is an incredible school, but anytime I bring up that I want to go there to anyone outside of California, I am always asked: "that's the school with all of the hippies, right?" Internationally, the perception of Berkeley is always the activism of the 60's.
When I bring up that I got into UCLA to the same people, the response usually seems to be: "wow, that's a really good school, you must have done really well in CC."
I even had this issue in Paris, and since I want to work internationally, I've decided **** it, I'm going to be a Bruin.

tough call. this is really a stressful situation - getting everything together and making it worth while in order to reverse the decision. I would try because you might feel some regret, but don't do it and regret it in the end.

This had to happen right around finals...ugh.

What is everyone including?

Is there a way to call them and ask why you were rejected?

is there a word limit on the UCB appeal?

I am also curious about that: call and ask why you were rejected.

they wont talk to you about your application

has anyone sent an appeal yet?

I'm planning to send mine in a few days before the 15th. The chance of getting in is 10%....not bad. I think 40% of the 10% get in for Spring. It's not THAT bad of a chance considering how many people actually appeal. Just need to make a good statement...

I appealed to UCB and got in...
It was so worth it!

what did you put for ur appeal JenBen08?

I talked about my father's illness and my grandmother's illness and how I helped my mother care for them both during their times of sickness. also i touched on how my essay didn't correlate with the choice of major that I put down because I heard that sometimes admissions officers will sometimes read your essay and look at your major (excluding those who went in undeclared) and wonder why your major says, for example, art when your essay is about how much you love mathematics or something, you know? I let them know that the two were not mutually exclusive in my eyes and that I could do both and do them well. of course NONE of this information was in my original application. they stress that they want NEW and critical information that you did not include the first time around so I had to make sure that I didn't touch on anything that was in my original application. a letter from my mother and 4 teacher recommendations were also included. the important thing to do is make sure that you say that you would like to be considered for SPRING if fall admission is still denied. that's what I did and I got in for spring. my friend who appealed and DID NOT specify the above mentioned was not offered a spot at all, but then again, I didn't see her letters at all.

hope that helped! :]

What were your stats btw, JenBen?

i just found our that Im validictorian for my cc's graduating class...is that new compelling info for a Berk appeal?

'i just found our that Im validictorian for my cc's graduating class...is that new compelling info for a Berk appeal?"

Seeing as how you misspelled valedictorian you might wanna wait on that appeal...

it cracks me up when people correct others on their spelling on forums. We all make mistakes when we are typing quickly in forums, god knows I've made quite a few in my posts. I sure am glad Berkeley did not use forum posts as a criteria for student selection or most of us would be out of luck

luvtoolearn- that squiggly red line is going to be your road to success in the future my friend.

god it's an honest mistake....pretentious people suck. And a spelling error doesn't mean i should wait to appeal. This is a forum to help fellow students not discourage them!
