I feel like i'm the only one who applied early to hotel. . . If you applied ED list your stats and where you're from. Also just since I'm curious list some of the questions you were asked on your interview because I got some really out there questions. GO HOTEL

I applied under ED
I am from surburban Philadelphia, PA
I have my interview scheduled next Thursday,,I am excieted for this.
I don't want to post my stat since numbers are not the best way to look at...But I have lived in a lot of different countries, and have experience working in a hospitality field (restaurant) constantly.
Good luck HotelschoolCornell,
do you mind sharing some of the questions you got?

haha since I guess we're competing you'll have to find out on your own. However, I can give you some of the general stuff. Obviously they ask about your interests in hospitality and your interests in Cornell and the hotel school specifically. They also talk about work experience you've had and short term and long term goals you have. I did get weird questions like "look out the window and tell me what you see" and out the window was an unbelievably non-descript building. It went well and it's not all that hard just be honest and be yourself. Try to be more conversational than nervous or anything. They're not looking to screw you over they really want to like you so show them something to like. Best of luck!

well, thank you for your generousity, then. I think that even though we are competing against each other, we are all hotel school hopeful after all.
Anyway, as you mentioned, I also think that interview should be more conversational and such. I am also staying there overnight with a host student (contacted through Red Carpet Society) so I am very very excited about both of these events.
Thanks again, and I, too, wish you the best of luck.

I know that we are not competing and I would most want both of us to get in, but they only accept approximately 200 students so I have to be realistic. What background in hospitality do you have? What other schools are you looking at? I too am going to be staying with some of my friends the weekend after next at a student who graduated from my hs' dorm.

yeah? that sounds great
other schools I am looking at are
UPENN (Wharton)
Columbia
U of Michigan
NYU (Stern)
Boston College (I applied EA for this school)
and one of my state schools as a safety (Penn State/Pittsburgh)
I would probably go on to hospitality business regardless of where I go next year or what I major though, because that's where my genuine passion is.
Oh, and I have worked at a local restaurant for four years, worked as a tour guide etc..... I do a lot of school activities and voted as president for most of the activities.....

what about you HotelschoolCornell?? where else are you thinking of applying?

I worked at a restaurant for a year and had an internship at a hotel for a year. I have a bunch of ecs lots of work experience some random camp counselor ski instructor XC skiing. I applied early to providence umiami and uconn because hopefully I'll get accepted to those so that if I get denied/deferred from Cornell I'll feel a little better. What other schools have hospitality though that are good? I decided I might end up just going to a business school somewhere in a big city and trying to get internships. Who knows...

hey i'm a sophmore right now so no competition to any of you guys! so i was wondering if you guys could tell me where you found hospitality related job in hotels or restaurants? or if guys got your jobs through connections or what not becuase around my area (san jose, CA) it seems to be really hard to get an internship in a hotel. thanks sooo much.

by the way, both of you gusy sound like really good candidates cuase what i hear is if you've got work experience, you're almost in. good luck!

A lot of my work experience kind of fell into my lap. I also had an internship with my local state senator. To get hospitality jobs it really took a long time and was a pain in the as sto do. I called hotels, but I kept getting the run around and all of the hotels told me that they did have internships, but none for high school students only for college students. So I started to email the general managers of hotels, the front office managers, the directors of human resources and I got a ton of people who were really interested. Everyone of the people who replied told me how rarely they had seen anyone my age pursue a passion like this and how I was the youngest person they had ever worked with at a hotel. My advice would be to email as many people as you can. I know it sounds kind of weird, but it really is the most efficient way of doing it. It doensn't take much of your time or theirs. Write out a resume and explain why you would want the internship or job and send it to all the people you can. You'll get a bunch of replies and then sort through them based on how close they are to you and how much of a fit they are. For me personally there were some offers in Boston, but I live 20 minutes from Boston so I found some in the surrounding cities. Also I didn't want to do menial work. I wanted to actually do something and learn. The hotel I found allowed me to rotate through the various departments and learn from each of the department heads and the front line people like front desk staff and housekeepers. Also they let me work at the front desk by myself and I learned a tremendous amount about dealing with guests and responsibilty. Explain to them what you want when you get the job would be my biggest advice too don't wait too long to set the guidelines. Explain that you want to help them, because in some of my internshps I was unpaid which was great for them, and in the hotel I was paid basically half of what the front desk staff made. Best of luck to you and let me know how it works out. Talk about cornell and the hotel school and how you'd really like to pursue hospitality and you'd like the ability to make sure it's really what you want to do and explain why hospitality interests you.

wow. thanks sooo much. i will be sure to email! thanks and goodluck again!

everyone wants interns. i think that's the easiest way of getting a job.

intern, as in unpaid? that's ok i guess.

Hey you are not the only one who applied to Hotel School at Cornell! I also applied to Hotel School, but as a transfer for spring 2006! I am a freshmen enrolled at Penn State.
Don't worry how many people apply to your major. The most important factor is that you feel that you will have a passion for this major!

Good Luck,
Anthony

i started out as an unpaid intern. but now i work there part-time.

coolant what are your stats?

coolant: what's the transfer process like for hotel school? is it any different? and what classes did you take at your first college? thanks!

so there are only like 2 ppl that applied early to Hotel school from CC? ... c'mon there have to be more of you out there

My daughter also applied to the Hotel School ED. Good luck to all
