If I recall right, it was $2,000 if you lived within 50 miles and were selected, but my son was outside the 50-mile radius so those were $1,000 scholarships.

We tracked down the individual advisors and had them each fill out the community service verification. They only asked for three of them, so it wasn't very time consuming and was worth it for a thousand bucks.

Hey Brainomatic.....did you track down three from your original application? I can't find a copy of mine and cannot remember who I referenced on my application. I moved from NC to Ohio this past summer and it would be virtually impossible to get a signature.....most of my volunteer hours were from NC.

Yes, they were all from my original application, however if you've moved, I can see where that would be a problem, so I would use whatever is available where you live now. GOOD LUCK!

(You might want to explain that you've moved and this is the community service you've been involved in at your new location, in case they think something's fishy compared to your original application.)

Read the top of the service verification form. I think it can be three recent activities -- not even necessarily ones you put on the form. My daughter was looking at the instructions very carefully because one of her signed forms got lost in the mail and she was having trouble tracking down other folks because it is spring break.

She has a copy of what she submitted originally and every name has a telephone number because they had asked for that, so I bet you gave telephone numbers with the names on your original forms, too. If you put three new activities down and have them verified, the scholarship people can always call the other people if they have questions about the genuineness of your service.

Not a problem. Folks have been so helpful with other applications that I'm just indirectly repaying the favor in kind. Good luck, nicholby.

It is odd to have this scholarship featured when the deadline has passed. Still, it could be a good reminder to juniors to do research about private scholarships over the summer. The Best Buy website says they will reopen the application process on New Year's Day. This year, they will be giving these awards (mostly $1,500, I think) to 1,700 seniors. They are likely to be flooded with applicants in 2008 because of this thread, but those of you CCers who do a lot of service are likely to vacuum them up.

Yep, I applied too. I know originally the info was to go out in mid-March. But when I check now...it says mid-May. I work at Best Buy. I don't think that makes my chances any better...heck, it might go against me.

I am on several threads for different scholarship finalist. I think it is great that they continue after the deadline for the simple fact that it helps those of us who are finalist have an idea about the process and the final wait. The Gates Millinium has passed and there are several of us who made the final stages and we all talk daily as well. It is great to have support from past winners and present finalist!

I found out about this scholarship along with Coca-Cola and Gates and numerous others on the fastweb site. You can put your information in and they send you all scholarships that you qualify for. My older sister did the same thing and she landed eleven different scholarships through fastweb, including coca-cola scholar.
