Community Service Scholarship

My son is working on his today. How many other accepted students here are applying for it? Just curious.

I applied for it and am really hoping that I get it because without the money it would be impossible for me to attend Tulane :(

Good luck, Elizabeth!! My son has done quite a bit over the years but it’s not like he started his own chapter of Habitat for Humanity or anything. ;)

I’m hoping it will be enough to land him the money.

Does anyone know how they judge the applications? Like the more service hours you have the more likely you are to recieve a scholarship? Or the more service leadership the better?

Hey mavitale!–My son NEEDS to get started on it. I’m assuming he still intends to fill that one out…as you know, we need all the help we can get.

meerkat–I wish I knew the answer to your question, was a little curious about that myself.

Good luck everyone.

I’m not sure how they evaluate these scholarships applications - sorry. My best guess is that consistency of service would rank pretty high. I other words, having volunteered at an organization all 4 years of high school.
Are you filling out the actual application or attaching a resume?

Is this scholarship ONLY paper? Or is it somewhere online too?

Not sure what you mean, Cheer. The application is a pdf file that you need to print and fill out, along with getting some additional recs (or maybe one additional rec) and attach one or two short essays. I haven’t looked at this year’s app so not sure of the actual details, but that is the general idea. I don’t think you can just fill out an on-line application.

That’s what I was looking for. Thanks FC!

Right… you fax it in. My son has a video that he wants to include, so he has to find out exactly how to make sure the video is somehow associated with his app.

Is there any harm in sending the application in via snail mail? Aside from the chance of it getting lost.

No harm except exactly what you said. Maybe spend an extra few dollars and send it certified mail via the post office. Still cheaper than FedEx or UPS I think.

We sent D2’s CSS app via the post office–Priority Mail with signature confirmation guarantee. The tracking ended abruptly a few days later with the application received by the post office but after that “system has not been updated.” After a phone call to the NOLA post office on Carrollton, I learned that all mail to Tulane at their PO Box automatically gets forwarded to another destination–the employee thought it was in Dallas-- for processing. At what point the mail ends up at Tulane, I do not know. But if I were waiting for a signature confirmation of receipt, I’d still be waiting. Sheeeeeesh!

I didn’t even attempt to track my S1’s scholarship app for the DHS, just wanted to make sure it was postmarked and sent Priority. One less thing to worry about.

Apparently Tulane is being bombarded with calls by students looking to ensure their CSS apps was received. We got a call back from Avery Brewton, who heads the CSS program explaining that they received 600 or 800 (can’t remember which number she said) CSS applications and that she will only see the final 80 applications that make the cut.

Interesting about the mail getting forwarded somewhere else. I sent DS’s on Monday via Express Mail and it was showing as being delivered at 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Maybe that was just the time it was delivered to the NOLA post office?

Yes Snoflake, that’s when it arrived in the NOLA Post office. And that’s what counts, so no worries.

Thanks, Vitrac. Now on to the FAFSA!

Any idea when the results for this one come out?

In past years it was around March 19
