are u guys filed with CASH so u can afford so many application fees?

What cash are you talking about? Hail to the application fee waiver! :)
I applied to 18 and plan to apply to one more (just in case). But I am an international in need of full FA, so I guess the big number of applications is rather understandable in my case.

plus for some ivies, they'll only let you apply there up to a maximum of 3 times. Therefore, I am saving the "big guns" for graduate school.

Crap, I've never heard of this. Can anyone explain further or link to more info?

On the note of GC reactions: I got a huge school, and they will actually only give you FOUR reccomendations for colleges and scholarships. That's four total. With that being said, the Common App only counts as one, and the UC App only counts as one. But...what if I wanted to apply to a bunch of Common App schools, the UCs, Georgetown, a college out of the country, and a scholarship or two? They would turn me down and say NO, WE'RE TOO OVERWORKED, YOU CAN'T HAVE ANY MORE RECOMMENDATIONS SORRY.

It's sad really. I hate having 900 kids in my class.

I applied to a match, 4 reaches, and 7 safeties. I got into the safeties and match.. just waiting on the reaches x[

What are the restrictions on the Application Fee Waiver?

I think is financial-income thing.

that's really cool though, like u apply to a ridiculous amount of colleges without paying.

Wow, my D applied to 6. I can't imagine her applying to more than 10. She was accepted early (not official ED, just early) at her 2 safeties, was accepted ED II at her favorite and withdrew the apps to the other three.

I applied to fourteen--I've heard from two already (deferred Dartmouth ED/Accepted SUNY Binghamton EA), and will be hearing from the other 12 + Dartmouth again in the next month...just shoot me right now, 11 to 13 rejections would not surprise me.

My list was much longer last year, though. I cut out quite a few schools, as I really wanted to be under fifteen. I know someone who applied to 23; he's insane.

My nephew applied to a truly ridiculous number-one, early decision, where he got in.

"I mean, I can't possibly go visit U Dub or Minnesota, but can probably assume what they are like based on Penn State and UMCP (anyone have any feedback on this? Are g
giant publics essentially the same?)."

It's not a safe assumption that giant public universities are the same. They could have different atmospheres for any number of reasons. So even if you visit a giant public and don't like the atmosphere, don't rule out all giant publics because there may be others you'd enjoy attending.

Notably, at most publics, the vast majority of students are in-state. Unsurprisingly, the culture of the state in general is going to impact the campus culture. Note that this is probably less true for universities like Michigan or Wisconsin with relatively high numbers of OOS students.

Also, in states with multiple solid public universities, each might tend to attract different types of people.

Even if you can't visit, you can research the schools that interest you in other ways.

I applied to...13, I think? I kind of regret it. I did it because I was really afraid I'd get rejected from everywhere I applied. I've heard from five so far, and have been accepted at all, so even if I have no more choices come April, choosing is going to be really difficult. It's a lot of work, but it's definitely doable.

My friend applied to 31!!! Yikes!

I applied to 16, got into 2 out of 3 I've heard from. lol 13 more to go!

Oh wow, I feel kinda mediocre for only applying to 13 now! 31! That's insane.

I do regret applying to the big public schools like Penn State and Pitt because I never had any intentions of going to them and I think I wasted my parent's money. I have to confess, I only applied to Pitt because I was tired of waiting around for an acceptance letter from anywhere (...in early October lol) and I knew they would respond quickly. I have been accepted to all 13 schools, but I can only go to ONE so it seems like the colleges I applied to just to see if I could get in were a waste of money. The recommended 6 or 7 would probably have been more appropriate and I still would have had quite a few options of colleges to choose.

My Guidance Counselor hates me now, and I am afraid to even go to her office anymore. At my HS, most kids apply to MAYBE 3 or 4 colleges and call it quits. Even though I timed my applications and transcripts to be sent out in "waves" of two or three at a time, by early November my GC had her secretary telling me she was out in meetings even when I could see her clearly sitting in her office on the phone. It was ridiculous, and then she told me I should just go to community college since I am apparently so indecisive. I hope to patch up our relationship sometime soon. ;)

Good luck to everyone still waiting!

our school recommends 6, 2 safeties, 2 match, 2 reach. i did 15, but thats only cause the schools i applied to are soo competitive

I know of people like this, and I like to call them application wh..ores.

"Oh but this one is beautiful"
"Oh but this has a great swin team"
"Oh but this one has a recycling program"

Make up your ****ing mind. Anything more than 15 is excessive. 20 is absolutely absurd.
25- kill yourself.

I settled on 9, and dont even want to go to 4 of them.
The only thing applying to 15+ does is take away possible spots from people WHO ARE decisive.
Get over your insecurities and move on with it.

^^ my rant of the day :)

She did write your letter of rec before all that, lol?

Thats what I'm afraid of happening. When I meet my college GC, I'm going to be blunt and tell him I'm going to apply to a crapload of schools, right up front.

What about those of us who will need merit aid to attend a certain place? If I was loaded, I'd probably only apply to 6-7 schools, but money is a huge factor and will most likely sway my decision.
