Anyone applying to Olin?

Hi! My S is applying to Olin currently, but there is one thing we are confused about. On the Common App, the last section says

“The admission process at Olin College is unique. The application review process will conclude by late January. Approximately 240 applicants will be selected as “Candidates” and then invited to campus to participate in a design project, individual interviews and team exercises in late February and early March. Therefore, it is critical that we receive an indication of your academic performance during your senior year by January 1, 2013. We realize that this deadline may fall before you receive your first semester grades, therefore we are happy to accept a first quarter report card, first semester progress report, or similar official school document reflecting your senior grades thus far.”

And so my son had his counselor email him his 1st quarter report card, but how do we turn that in? There is no where to attach the report card. Will it show up after we submit the application?

I’m speculating that you could forward the email to Olin. Hopefully others who have been in the same situation will add suggestions too. Good luck!

Maybe you could mail it in. List Tje common app ID# on the envelope and maybe in a cover letter enclosed with the report card.

This thread is from 2007… no exact answer, but it shows others have been in same boat

I thought that the counselor reported the grades the same way they would report mid-term grades on the common app for other schools…

We will try emailing them the report card and see if that is acceptable, but otherwise we actually learned yesterday that the Olin application is now due on the 2nd, at which point my S will be at school. He’ll try talking to his counselor that day as well if the email does not work out. Thank you all for your responses!

Joey10 – My daughter emailed her 1st quarter grades 2 years back and that was acceptable then.

Joey10- did your son check his status on his Olin account? There should be senior grades listed under complete. My son had the counselor send them just like the other grades

We were planning on emailing in the report card to them, but if they say that isn’t okay to do, then he’ll talk to his counselor as soon as winter break is over (he should be back in school by the 2nd).

Hey guys,
would we be able to screenshot our current grades and e-mail it to the college? It seems very informal… but my counselor is not replying to my e-mails so I’m not exactly sure what I should do to send in my current senior grades.

bluexmarker, that might be a bit informal. The Olin Admissions office is open on the 31st, and I highly suggest calling them on that day and asking them. Are you going to be back on school by the 2nd? Remember that the application is due that day, and not the 1st, and so you could talk to your counselor in school. Worst case scenario, (you can’t contact Olin and you won’t be in school on the 2nd) then email them the screenshot. Hope this helps.

bluexmarker- you might be better off faxing a copy of your current senior grades to Olin and then have your school counselor follow up with Olin when you get back to school.

Question for current students/their parents/admissions: Does Olin still provide a travel subsidy (based on distance?) to help with the cost of attending CW? We are working out our contingency budgets for 2013 and want to make sure we have squirreled away the resources for dS to attend if he is lucky enough to be invited. Last year, was it equivalent to one round trip air flight or something? Would we be paying for a room at the BECC too? Thanks!

When we did CW a few years ago, the supplement depended on home location. I think we got $250/maximum for Colorado.

We spent a lot more. But DH went along and rented a car and booked 3 nights at hotels in order to revisit two other Boston colleges and see family.

The subsidy was nice, but wasn’t enough for a ticket for us.

You can stay in whatever hotel you want, unless your son is traveling by himself. Then he must stay in the BECC. There are special discount rates for the BECC for Oliners. He can also get a roommate (they will arrange) and thus split the cost. It’s a good way for him to get to know people (but only works if you’re not going).

Is the BECC reserved only for orphans (kids without parents) or is that a potential option for parents plus student too? I guess parents need a car/taxis if we stayed 15 minutes away at the Sheraton. Looks like the contingency hotel budget would be about the same, however, so that is all I need to know for now. Thanks.

Please, Olin!?

I’ll be so devastated if I don’t even get a chance to have fun at CW… :o!

Parents plus students can also stay at the BECC, but students can’t get matched up with another student.

You need a car if you stay anywhere other than BECC.

If my daughter is traveling by herself, she flies into Logan.

If the whole family is flying and we’re renting a car, we look at the other airports that are father away, but easier driving. Check the driving time (and airline/rental car costs) from Bradley airport in Hartford, Connecticut and the airport in Manchester, NH.

Has anyone received the e-mail that contains our username and password for an Olin application account? One of the e-mails that Olin sent out said we “will receive an e-mail shortly” that contains our account information, but I have yet to receive that e-mail.
Just wondering, thanks :)

I’m waiting for that e-mail, too. So, you’re not the only one!
