Anyone buying a next gen console?

For college, are you guys going to buy a next gen console like xbox 360? I personally cannot wait for the revolution.

xbox's are junk, they always break down. Im goin with the PS3 when it comes out, you just cant go wrong with Japenese electronics.

I've got a 360 now, but I'm gonna say that it's probably not gonna be with me much longer. Stupid Microsoft and their backwards compatibility for old xbox games....

Yep I'm pre-ordering a PS3.... can't wait till November to get it!!

Hopefully you got $450+ to shell out for a ps3 since that is the expected cost of it at retail. Also You better be willing to wait until sometime in 2007 to get a hold of it. Sony Is going to get its ass handed to it this round of console's. They will miss there secound christmas if the unit doesnt ship this year (which it wont, It will maybe reach japan before november). People wont wait too much longer for it, they will see the revolution and the 360's graphics and just buy one of those instead.

It's already been confirmed for a worldwide launch in November. I'm more than willing to shell out $500 for it, as it also doubles as a bluray dvd player, which by itself would cost about $1000.

Also remember, Sony is very insistent on putting the Blue-ray DVD drive into the PS3. That will make the actual cost of the unit extremely high (around $1500), and with the xbox at $399 and the Revolution expected to be cheaper than that, Sony is going to have to take some serious losses in order to compete price-wise. Therefore, that means that production will be limited until the technology settles and the manufacturing cost falls.

Wow get a clue, the PS3 will be nowhere near $1500. It's going to start at $400, and I believe you can upgrade it for another $150, but thats optional.

I also Question the quality of the games that they have shown for the system. I Have yet to see someone playing an actual game on the device. I do not buy sony trying to pass off pre-rendered scenes as what the games for their system will look like. Since they said the ps2 (Not a typo, i mean PS2) would have "graphics like toy story" iv never trusted anything their PR dept has ever said. Once i hear about Developers actually having the consoles and i see gameplay on the console (live, not pre-rendered) i will make the judgement if its worth the extra money. The cell is a ***** to code with so i wonder how many developers will actually use all of the core's (Not to mention the core's have fixed abilitys (Alot of the core's Are Float Only and not general purpose) that limit the REAL power of the console significantly)

he was referring to manufactuing costs, but that's still overstated. blu-rays will retail for 1000, but their actual costs will probably be closer to 600 or so probably, my guess is the ps3 will cost sony closer to 750 to produce.

They're gonna take a hefty loss no matter how you look at it, but if blu-ray fails the format wars against hd-dvd sony could stand to lose a TON of money.

hopefully i'll get a PS3 from Santa...

This doesnt make any sense. Why would a company produce a ton of products that they arent going to make any money on, especially lose money!

I'm not upgrading from GameCube, which I use for two things: baseball and football. Create a player allows me to keep teams up to date.

There's just no point in me doing it because sports games are pretty much the only thing I play, I don't play that often, and to justify the cost of a new system against something else I may want (like clothes or something for my car) shows that it's not a logical move for me.

Get a PS2 and Madden, and then u wont have to create players, instead u can just update rosters from online mode. Then, u will never have to buy Madden again.

Actually, this is exactly what is done. Even now with xboxes. Microsoft sells them at a loss (though admittedly far less now than when they debuted) because they will in theory make up the sales in terms of games, controllers, online subscriptions, etc etc.

It is estimated that MS lost millions on the xbox, and won't gain it back till after the xbox360, as that is what it costs to break into a market when you're not already leading it.

In terms of new consoles, of course the cost will be greater. Look at the xbox360. It has a tri core processor. Intel's dual core retails around $300-400, so does an xbox 360. By all rights, its about as fast, if not faster, than a $2000 laptop. (which does have a bit of a margin, though slight at like 1600 cost) They ARE losing money, hand over fist over face.

(And yes, I work at Best Buy, margin above (Best Buy's) cost is less than 5% on xboxes, ps3s, xbox360s, ipods, and laptops) - We don't take losses, MS does.

Yeah, I was referring to manufacturing costs, my fault for any misunderstanding. And while stand-alone Blu-ray players cost $1000, don't forget to add in the costs of the PS3's new cell chip (the first of its kind) along with the wireless technology, development costs, etc. That's how I came out with my $1500 estimate, but I know that many will beg to differ.

The reason for the high cost is mostly due to the research and development of it. Initially, it is going to be of high-cost. Once a steady stream of manufacturing the new technology has been established, and all, if any, quirks are resolved, then the costs should decrease. Until that happens though, Sony will have to cough out a lot of cash to get the PS3 going in the market.

And just on a side note, Madden 06 on 360 really sux! What the heck was EA thinking when they released the game!?!?

Ya they rushed it and its too bad. They took out a lot of the main features, which didnt make people happy.

here you go.. since noone has actually posted anything about the actual pricing of the ps3..

Between 600-700 US dollars.

Update: Sony Europe takes back what they said earlier in the article linked above:

I think the PS3 price is set at $499 and $599.
