Anyone decide to do BA in Theatre at Elon if not excepted BFA MT?

So impressed with Elon. Has anyone gone the BA route after being rejected for BFA Musical Theatre? Curious about the training one still receives, the reality of being able to audition and get cast in shows and the general feeling among those in the BA program. It could be a great way to explore other interests, however, are there enough performance oriented classes for the BA student...acting, dance and vocal...and are they the same classes and faculty as the BFA students?

I don’t personally know much about the program, but I have a friend who graduated with the BA and felt very second string to the BFA’s throughout her 4 years…That’s about all I know.

I know someone who was not accepted into the BFA but decided to attend anyway with the BA in Theatre with a dance minor. He then re-auditioned when he got there and was accepted to the BFA Acting program. Not saying it’s easy to do or maybe even worth thinking about, but that was this year and is a possibility.

The advice we received: If you want to do MT and have the option to do MT anywhere, don’t settle for anything else no matter the school. You’ll likely be disappointed and frustrated. It stands to reason that BAs will not have the same type of training or opportunities as BFAs.

I second what is said above. The BA theatre degree does not really offer performance based classes, unless that has changed recently.

Thanks everyone. Any thoughts on a BA acting program with strong training and performance opportunities - acting, vocal, dance.

If you want a BA program with lots of performance opportunities, check out the ones without a competing BFA program or grad students. American and Muhlenberg are good choices.

Not an option for this year, but for those with very strong academics Northwestern’s theatre BA offers many performance opportunities (as above, no BFA or graduate students in the performing mix), plus a very well respected auditioned MT certificate program.

James Madison also has auditioned BA programs in musical theatre and theatre. Students in the theatre program have the opportunity to take some voice and dance classes.

re post #9… of course, music and dance (as well as theatre) are part of the MT program too. ;)
