Am I the only one that feels I am a solid High School Junior with good grades and ACT scores, yet when I get on this site and read other kids stats, I feel worthless and no good!? I mean, come on. It's frustrating listening to asians posting "chance me at UCLA!" and they post how they have a 36 ACT, 2380 SAT, 7000 hours of community service, and finished number one worldwide and beat bobby fisher in chess. Your thoughts on this, and if you can empathize with me!? lol :)

I totally agree. I thought I was a beast but then I started reading CC and now consider myself worthless. Some threads on here really push my buttons…like people asking if they should retake a 35 ACT. Seriously bro?

Just block those out and focus on your strengths. For example, I refuse to read the APUSH or SAT II USH threads since I know I fared poorly on both and don’t want to know all the ones I got wrong. I read the whole AP Psychology and AP/SAT Biology threads since I knew I did much better on those and each new post confirmed another one of my answers and made me feel much better.

Yeah definitely. Most people KNOW that they can get in, they just want more conformation and reassurance from people because their parents don’t give them enough at home. Don’t have a problem with the legitimate questions when a kid actually has average scores and could go either way.

Don’t worry about it at all. If you are just on this site, chances are you have a higher than normal shot at getting into somewhere like UCLA, Berkeley, and the like. It’s not that difficult to get in, especially because being a user on CC already shows you care enough to talk about colleges and admission on your spare time.

Hahahaha yeah, it amuses me that I chance people with numerical stats much higher than what mine were when I applied.

Yeah you’re not the only one. People complain about this all the time.

“not that difficult to get in” Spoken like someone who didn’t apply this year.

But seriously, I don’t believe half of what people write about themselves on these pages.
And in the end, all that matters is what the adcom thinks.
So, don’t sweat these pages.

All the time -_-

Kinda makes me nervous of going into a university next semester

I’m going to UCLA in the Fall, and I still get depressed looking at these posts. However what saddens me the most is the negativity that others show toward prospective students of any university/scholarship. Don’t let the posts get to you. I actually joined to help encourage others to apply! Students don’t give themselves enough credit (I’m not talking about the straight A student either). Don’t let any of these posts discourage you from trying anything. You know yourself the best, and you don’t need anyone telling you you’re not good enough. With that being said, keep moving forward :)

The only thing depressing on this site is the recognition that foreign students are expected to be a huge source of funding for a college. I understand having to pay for the opportunity, but to multiples of 4-6 times above the entire cost of a school at home is brutal.

There’s always someone out there who is better than you at something. But their greatness doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t get into the school you really want. Schools accept a WIDE range of applicants, it’s mostly the luck of the draw for top students.

Also if you can’t emotionally deal with someone being better than you, then stay off CC (and consider some therapy…).

^Conversely, you can also choose to keep bragging out of CC. That’s always an option :P

Nobody is every really “better” than anyone else. Some people just have major superiority complexes and like fishing for compliments.

Yeah, most of the people that asked to get chanced on here aren’t representative of the entire pool of applicants. Just apply, admissions can be kind of a crapshoot and a lot of people that don’t expect to get in end up getting in.

Sounds like my mentality when I was a senior TS. I felt like I had solid stats, and then they kids on here just blew me away. “I got a 2300…I’m gonna retake to score higher;” I still remember that line from someone’s post. Crazy. But yeah don’t let them get to you. There will be very strong applicants that don’t get in, yet someone who’s slightly above average just might.

Overachiever92, it seems like this post is directed right at you. However, your thoughts on this topic are still, of course, welcome.

Baussman, I think you’re right. The “average” stats posted by colleges are average since the majority of people get that. Thus, UCLA can’t be THAT hard to get in to.

You Rock kathyandrade!

The average GPA is roughly 4.3 and they don’t really care about test scores that much. People with 4.6s get rejected, possibly because their essays are sup-par, but it still shows how arbitrary their admissions are. They have 72,000 applicants and can’t accept every qualified student. Not to be a pessimist, just pointing out facts here.

You guys, I registered on this site because I really wanted to address those of you worrying. I got into UCLA with a 1930 SAT score, I got 590 on Physics and 660 on Math for the SAT2. Didn’t even take the ACT. So you still have a good chance to get in because other stuff like a great personal essay and volunteer/personal achievements matter. And either way, wherever you end up going, I can almost assure you that you will enjoy your experience at that college.

I’m going to have to shout “amen” to that. This site is nothing but a combination of pessimism, elitism, and disillusionment.

After realizing this, I gave this site up. I just realized I never came out of here happier than I began. Unless you need this site, it really is a toxic environment.
