Anyone Else Frustrated?

My D had everything in to PSU mid-October.
She has yet to hear from them. Others who submitted their ap well after her have gotten replies. What's up with PSU?? There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the way they make decisions. No way do they have rolling admissions!

I'm REALLY frustrated!!!

Thanks for listening . . . I needed to vent.

:)

I agree with you completely. A woman in admissions told me today that if the kids don't hear anything by next Tuesday then it will be mid January by the time they finish up with replies..... she said to check the website everyday since answers are posted before 8 am. We have been doing just that. :-)

I had everything in by October 12th.....and am still waiting. I applied as a Political Science major (which I'm sure is a popular major). What will be the most frustrating is, if after ALL this waiting, I get rejected..........but, I'm trying to stay positive. What state is everyone from? I'm from RI............

Very very frustrating. Also applied September and heard nothing yet. In our school, so many kids were accepted to main campus, Smeal and other schools with GPA's in mid 3s and average SATs. Many of these kids applied much later than we did. I see no reason why Penn State evaluates applications so randomly and of course creates great anxiety for kids who applied early, have great stats and have not heard yet. Surely their IT system should allow the school to do evaluations in a more chronical and logical manner, especially if it is rolling admission. Therefore, I have a question for those attending the University already- how organized are other services, registration for classes, etc?

Mid-January!!
Very unfair!! My D applied EA to all her schools (9) and is waiting on PSU, SUNY New Paltz (which she doesn't care about), and Maryland (which we know will be in March).

Last night The Ohio State University actually called her to let her know she got in. Very nice!!

It would stink for PSU to keep them waiting only to deny them so late.

OSU is her first choice, but PSU is a VERY close second.

In fairness to PSU, they do have a lot of applications to go through. Also, if you are the middle 50%, they would have to wait until they have gone through the applications through Nov 30th.

miche:

Plenty of schools have a ton of aps to go through and make decisions in a standardized order. It seems to be luck of the draw with PSU.

I bet they do this on purpose just to f*** with your minds.

Well the deadline was November 30th & it's only 2 weeks after that - so I think anxiety is running a little high. PSU is doing fine with their process.

Wouldn't more applications = more admissions committee members?

yea, im pretty frustrated with psu myself. I understand that they just have many applications, but I didn't think it would take them this long. I would think that they were pretty experienced with handling large numbers of applications. I submitted mines mid Nov and the reports of acceptances are trickling in my school...so the anger level is pretty high. lol

Alot of pvt. schools don't respond back to applicants until Feb-Mar imagine their anxiety!

I should have clarified that the reason why the responses could come by mid-January is because they (the office) takes off part of the winter break.

JMHO regarding the timing of admission decisions-

There will probably be over 100,000 applications to PSU this year. That is alot of applications admissions has to review.

I think you will see more early acceptances to students admitted to some of the larger colleges within PSU who are in the blue range of the bubble chart and have consistency between their GPA and standardized test scores. If you are in or close to the yellow zone on their bubble chart, or if there is an inconsistency between your grades and standardized test scores, you may have to wait longer.

A student applying to one of the smaller colleges might have to wait longer to hear from admissions, since there are a limited number of spaces available for students and the university wants to take the best qualified applicants.

Also as I seem to remember from prior years, some of the colleges' applications are reviewed before others, thus decisions go out earlier to applicants to those colleges.

So my advice is...relax and enjoy the holidays and your time off from school.

yeah i think most of us should expect to hear in mid january. which actually, is coming up soon, really. we should just enjoy our holidays..and look at this way, it's better we don't hear because if we were rejected now, it would probably ruin our holidays haha
plus, most of us are going to have mid-terms/finals right after our break so that will keep us extra busy and before you know it, our decision will come in the mail

I understand, waiting is frustrating. Just as a point of comparison, the U of Maryland's priority deadline is December 1st and they will not inform you until February (by March 1).

I feel your pain!!! But you need to relax. A few years ago my son sent his application in on Labor Day weekend and didn't hear back until mid-April. PSU was his number 1 choice so he was understandly getting a little worried. He called the admissions office in March and they told him they had received 120,000 applications for 6,700 places. Since then the number of apps has increased.

I spoke to a woman in admissions on Friday. She said that there will be a mass e-mail stating that all those who applied before November 30 will hear by the end of January. They have been pulling "pre-Nov 30" apps and reviewing them on a random basis. A few kids heard in our high school (both yes and no to UP) and they applied before Nov 30, after my son who applied back in Sept. It's been all over the news that, as a result of the falling economy, state school applications are expected to increase greatly. I would think that Penn State would be especially affected by that. It is better than a lot of small private colleges in PA and is anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 the tuition, depending on in and out of state. My son is also applying to Villanova $54K. PSU about $34K. Thankfully, PSU is his first choice. I'm sure many parents are insisting that their kids at least apply to a public school and if the privates don't come through with the $$, public it will be.

G Dad: My son also applied to University of Maryland. Do you think it is harder to get into UP/Smeal than Md's business school?? We are out of state for both.

My son is a freshman at UP. Last year when he applied it was mid October and did not hear until January 22. ( very stressful! ) We were told they send out acceptance letters by school. He applied to Political Science.
