So I'm scheduled for a heart procedure in March...I'm quite terrified, actually. It's called a balloon valvuloplasty, I think. I'm just worried I'll miss schoolwork and won't be able to return to my normal self.

Anyone else ever experience this?

This procedure is definitely not the icing on the cake along with all these AP tests and whatnot to study for.

I think just the fact that you are having heart surgery would cause a lot of stress for you; the timing during your junior year is not ideal either! Since this is a scheduled surgery (as opposed to emergency), the good thing is that you can plan for it. Talk to your counselor and your teachers to arrange to make up missed work either ahead of time, or to take it with you to do while you are laid up. Hopefully you will feel well enough to be able to get a lot of work done before you return to school. It sounds as if you can return to your normal routine not too long after surgery, so hopefully you won’t miss much school. Without knowing more about your medical condition or specifically what valve is involved, it is hard to speculate on the recovery process. Talk to your doctor and ask what the prognosis is, how long you will be out of commission, when you will be able to return to school, and what your restrictions will be after the surgery. Best wishes in a speedy recovery!!!

I had a somewhat complicated surgery (not like yours tho) in the beginning of sophomore year and had to miss about 3 weeks of class. But i planned it so that a week and a half were part of a hs trip, meaning that i only lost about 7 days of school. It was pretty tough tbh.

I think i’m gonna have to get another one this year, and i’m planning on doing it end of june if my doctor permits so that i can recover in the summer and be good to go for senior year.
