We are supposed to reason out a punnet square (assuming we've never heard of it) under severe time pressure?

but doesn't everyone take biology/genetics in high school?

No, you were supposed to look at Table 1 and see that there were many more combinations of alleles for green birds than any other color, thus you can assume green makes up 9/16 of the population.

I hate the ACT. It takes way too much energy out of us.

So "many more" = 9? Okay...but even if you mean that 9/16 is the largest fraction of 16, that's still a guess, not something you can reason out and be sure of.

Yes, but my point wasn't that the science test is unfair, only that it seemed to require a lot of previous knowledge. There's been some discussion on this forum about whether or not the science section requires previous knowledge or is meant to require previous knowledge. So my point was only that this science section did, not that it necessarily shouldn't have.

I'm probably just p!ssed because I happened to be taking the ACT after graduating from high school and freshman biology seems like ages ago...:p

I think they're gradually moving away from the "you don't need to remember specifics about science to do well on the Science test" assumption. The December test required a hell of a lot of previous knowledge to do well (unless you were a lucky guesser), and although this one wasn't as bad imo, you definitely needed to know your stuff to feel confident.

RE: Rocket Surgery

Well, you can reason that the greater number of combinations means the greatest fraction. I did and I was sure of my answer; it was not a guess. I totally forgot about punnet squares during the test so I was in the same boat as everyone else, I just reasoned my way through it.

No, you weren't sure of your answer. If you really didn't remember the punnet square, your reasoning was, "More here, more here", which is just a guess.

Ok, well, I think I would know if I was guessing or not, but believe what you like.

oh boo hoo stop crying rocket surgery...he got it right and thats wat counts, its called science reasoning and he reasoned it out

Did all students who took the February ACT take the exact same version of the test?

Well, all of the questions discussed on these forums have been from the same test.

But he didn't, by his own admission. He looked at the number of genes for the green phenotype, looked at the proportions, and guessed that more of one would mean more of the other.

I'm not crying over it, I'm just pointing out that that passage required previous knowledge.

Just for a moment I want to go back to that heaven-sent curve... wouldn't it be fantastic. Evidence of God's presence at the very least.

RE: Rocket Surgery

You said that I guessed by my own admission. I would like to see where I specifically said "I guessed." Please don't presume to know my mind better than I do.
