I've been feeling really badly lately about my parents having to pay so much for my education. My dad is the head of his own business and this is great of course, except for the fact that business isn't all that great! My parent's make 'too much' money for me to get anything substantial from financial aid and so they are stuck with footing the bill. Of course I plan on getting a job to help but I am going to live in an apartment off campus (which isn't much different from living on campus) and it is obviously going to be majorly expensive. IDK, anyone feeling this way too?

BTW, I know there are people out there who are going to have to take loans and etc. and your welcome to express your anxiety here!

P.S. i know this thread is kinda lame but whatever :(

heres my situation. my parents make too much for me to qualify for financial aid and they aren’t willing to pay for my college because back in the day they had to pay for their own college tuition. cool beans.

slowmotionzx- WOW, thats harsh. Are they at least going to help you get a place? Pay half? Anything? Sorry about your situation. What are you planning on doing?

Kelli-most parents figure that paying for their kid’s college(or as much as they are able) is part of the cost of rearing a child
The fact that you feel badly about spending a lot of money is not unusual.
Show them and tell them you appreciate their financial support for college.
Be successful in college and life…that will be the best thank you.

Im not eligible for financial aid too i feel like my parents dont have any choice but to pay for my education which sucks however, im still looking at private loans just to ease their burden a little bit. So we’ll see how it will work out…

lol thats how the system works, if your parents are super rich paying for college is no biggie and if youre super poor the state takes care of you, but if you’re middle class well, youre F#*$@D

Batllo-I am definitely going to show them that it was worth it, it is just hard when they can’t really see exactly where all of their money is going. They are almost forced to blindly trust me with the money. My dad doesn’t have any sort of retirement plan, so I just think of it as preventing him from at least ever having a possibility of it.

Hellostranger- How old are you? What kind of private loans are you looking into? I am currently paying credit cards back and can’t apply for credit. Would I also be exempt from loans? I mean…I doubt my parents will want me to take one, but that doesn’t mean their not stressed about the $$.

well my parents want me to figure things out for myself but they do put some money in my bank account from time to time. im probably going to graduate with a butt load of loans, but i have a trust fund so if i cant pay off the loans myself i just need to wait until im 30 or until they die and then im good!

slowmotionzx- that’s rough, im sure your going to be stressed as it is…what with college and all :). So your planning on taking loans? How are you going about credit…are you getting a co-signer? A trust fund huh? Why don’t they dig into that baby…your going to have to use it to pay off the loans anyway!

my parents have their own small business and make too much money for any financial aid at all…but they’re not going to pay for any college (they have their own retirement to look out for), or a car for that matter lol, though me and my dad have been sharing a car which has been almost working lol, oh and no trust fund, those loans are all me lol

This could have been me talking. For the most part (see the bottom of this post)

I actually got more financial aid, but its not near enough. My dad made a bunch of money last year, but he also got audited by the IRS for 50,000 dollars or so!!!
And he’s 60 and has no money saved for retirement. He owes money on our house because property value in California took a crap, so would lose money if he sold it. Plus, he’s not in the best health, and our health insurance is horrible. I’m super scared of him getting badly sick or injured, not just because that would be crappy, but because our family depends on him, and it would destroy us financially.

Ya I’m feeling bad for my parents : (

Oh, and off campus can be WAAYYY cheaper than on campus if you don’t mind sharing a room with someone, and you learn to eat cheaply.

I have mixed feelings about my parents paying for my college tuition. One part of me feels bad and spoiled in comparison to other who can’t foot the tuition costs. But on the other hand, my grandparents paid for my parent’s education back in the Philippines when they were literally dirty poor and could barely put food on the table. Without that education they would have never been able to come here to the U.S. and my parents didn’t want my brother and I to experience the struggle they had to go through when growing up. It’s family tradition which applies to many filipino families in general. I guess I should feel blessed.

I’m paying for my tuition myself, but thankfully I’m not getting kicked outta my house so free room and board. I just have to commute from SF to Berkeley which is not bad.

Dam I’m half, and I’m not getting anything hmm. Btw I’m 1st generation so maybe thats why.

@ixr I’m Filipino too! Yeah, those traditions are so typical of Filipinos. It’s unacceptable for my family that we do not go to college. So I guess, my dad feels obligated to pay for all of my tuition. I feel bad for him though. If only I could help him out in any way, I would. I just think of the long term effects. I’ll just give back to my parents right away once I finish school. Aka work my a$$ of right out of college

@kelli I’m 20. Um, to be honest I’m not quite familiar with these private loans. I’m going to SD on saturday and speak with a financial aid officer. I’ll definitely ask them about other ways I can pay for college. Private loans so I’m guessing banking? Sally Mae? I’m not sure…

absurdmike- Im sorry about your situation. I too worry about my parents health, my Dad hasn’t been to the doctor in years and my Mom has to pay a fortune. All I can say to you is that it WILL get better.

ixr- thats lucky! And YES, you should feel blessed!

Damn Its Johnny- That is a nice situation. Tuition is still rough though.
