Anyone from COC?

hey... i have a little problem that I think anyone from COC would know the answer to, because the counselors sure did not know what they were talking about.

So.. I'm applying this fall to UC Berkeley, UCLA, and other UC's. When i met my counselor a few weeks ago, she told me that I needed Honors English 101 to even be considered for admission at UC Berkeley. Is this true? Because my major is Philosophy, and on the IGETC paper, it says that "for colleges at UC Berkeley that do not accept the IGETC, Honors English 101 is required." As far as I know, the college with Philosophy (don't know which one) accepts IGETC...

If it is true that I HAVE to take Honors English 101, then I'm basically screwed because I'm pretty sure that they won't offer this honors course over this winter, which means that I won't get my English 102 done before the end of the spring semester... :( Anyone have some advice? Thanks guys...

No way, I go to COC and I’m also a philosophy major. I’ll be done with all requirements by the end of this fall term. I did English 101 and 103. I think the counselor you spoke to smokes crack. Just follow the IGETC and the prerequisites listed on assist.org.

Here are the requirements for your major:
[ASSIST Report: CANYONS 09-10 UCB Articulation Agreement by Major](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

As far as I know, honors courses aren’t even a requirement to get into Cal or any other UC for that matter. You do need to complete English 101 and the critical thinking part before you can transfer, but there is nothing about honors.

If you are a philosophy major you are applying to the College of Letters and Sciences. I’m going to say you are fine, but see if you can talk to another counselor or professor and get that clarified.

OMG thanks guys…that just relieved all my stress! and the counselor I was talking to is the one at the walk-in desk…

Predictthis… Do you no if they offer a lot of english 101 sections over the winter? and will it hurt my chances if I finish English 101 and 102 by spring and not fall?

thanks again

I think you would be playing with fire if you waited to complete 101 until Spring. Seeing how English is a requirement for most majors (if not all), it would put you at a disadvantage when being ranked compared to other students. Ultimately, and this is what I was told by an admissions officer, if two people are very similar, but one has grades in required classes and the other won’t until Spring, the one with the grades will receive admission.

They want to have as clear of a picture, as possible, of the type of student you are, and will be.

damn…well what if i get English 101 done during winter? Will i be able to include that grade when the UC’s come asking for our fall grades? Or will it be too late for that?

iambeowulf710,

don’t worry about taking 101 and 102 (or 103) during winter and spring–it will not effect your chances; just make sure that those classes are completed, because if they are not for any reason–even if you get accepted–your acceptance will be revoked.

by the way, I recommend taking 103 instead of 102, because 103 is critical thinking, which expands on much of the criteria you are already familiar with as a philosophy major; also, which philosophy courses have you taken?

k thanks

phew…looks like i was trippin balls haha

I’m only passing on what I was told. Apparently, predicthisflick has a much better grasp on what matters to the admissions officers than I do. I don’t mean to scare you, I’m just saying if there is a way to complete the courses that are required prior to Spring (critical thinking and writing is a major prep at UCLA), you would be better off.

Philosophy is not a very competitive major, so you will probably be safe either way.

haha true that uchopeful…thanks for the advice bro

UChopeful2010,

my bad, I didn’t read your post. It seems reasonable though. I guess, since completion of english courses is not a concern of mine, I kind of just brushed it off.

thanks for the info.

ok wait… so does it affect my chances significantly or does it not? haha sorry…

I was told that only Honors English 101 = English R1A and English 102 = English R1B (Berkeley). You might want to double check with the transfer center.

By the way, what courses are required if we want to transfer to UCB/UCLA as a philosophy major? I checked assist.org and none of the prerequisites are articulated.

I would just do as many as you can, e.g. intro, logic, symbolic logic, ethics, ancient, etc.

what’d you say about my c0ck?

ok I called cal today but they were confusing also… they said that as long as it covers the IGETC, its fine and hung up right after. :frowning: im so confused right now…

and pinkerfloyed… what?

Dood, there’s nothing to be confused about…just do english 101 and 102 or 103 and you are good.

k thnx… do you know if they offer a lot of english 101 sections in the winter?

I go to COC too; in the past they’ve offered a ton of Eng101 in winter, and I see no reason why they wouldn’t continue.

If I was you I would talk to an administrator at your school and see what their plan is for the Winter session. I know many schools have cut short terms, and even if they didn’t, they still cut sections.
