Hello, this is my first post here at College Confidential. I am applying to NYU and a few liberal arts colleges in NY this fall.

I've never taken the ACT before, it will be my first time in September. Anyone have any proven methods of studying? I am looking for a book or online course that isn't too expensive. I am willing to pay more if something REALLY worked for you.

I don't know much about the ACT at all. People who scored high because of studying, please tell me what your plan was!

The best book I used was the red one... It's called the Real ACT Prep Guide or something. The tests are completely realistic, and they give EXCELLENT explanations (they explain why each answer choice is wrong/right).
Oh, and stay AWAY from McGraw-Hill. Those books suuuucckkkkkk.

The Real ACT book is good. Kaplan significantly helped my reading score get up from a 23 to a 34 (yeah.. 11 point increase.. Kaplan's reading was pretty good for me)... I use McGraw-Hill for quick practice tests.. a little easier than the real act, but it's alright.. mistakes are in it though... Kaplan and the real act book helped me the most

I would reccomend The Real ACT book. It has the best practice tests (most effective type of preparation) and great explanations for the answers.

Order Princeton Review's Cracking the ACT (08 edition).

Kaplan is good, too.

PR has excellent tips on English & Math. The practice tests for it are really similar for all except science, from my experience. Kaplan is good for Math & Science.

it's really hard (especially english), but if you miss like 15 on english in barron's, then you'll miss 5 at most on the real thing.. barron's is definitely a good prep guide

I found a book called the crash coursefor the ACT and it is shorter than just about all other study books and helped me quite a bit because it's to the point.(reading went up nine but some of that was luck i bet)

I've figured what problems I had before and I realized that when I studied the books, I tend to forget them. So I wrote down every important detail from my practice books, mainly PR and Red book. Looked over them many times. That really helped with English and Math. For Reading, I read a lot before the test, which definitely helped, I got a 4 pt increase. Science, I got lucky because I took AP Bio.

If you want more specifics from each section ask.

If you have no worries with the Math/english sections, what would be the best book?
Science and Reading will be my lower ones, and I know I won't dominate the essay.

Is kaplan better for the science and reading sections???
