D applied for the honors program, but there was no mention in her acceptance packet, so I assume she didn't make it. Did anyone else hear, and was it included in the offer of admission folder?

Hi Mamabear - My daughter got her packet today, and it was in folder within the packet.

On the right hand side, there were to additional folders that had more letters in them - one of which was about the honors program.

It said that there were over 700 applicants for 150 spots. My d. is in at Elliot, and is lucky enough to be in for the honors program.

Thanks. We only had one additional folder (with a lovely portrait of George) so I guess no honors. Did your D get a Presidential Scholarship? Mine is also in Elliot, and they gave her 15,000, which is nice since we don't qualify for need-based aid.

I see you are near Boston. since D was denied at Tufts and Georgetown, I think her decision will be between BC and GW. We'll be traveling to both in the next couple of weeks.

Yeah i got into honors w/ 15000 a year. Still gonna be hard to afford so ill have to wait for need based. I got into the combined Bachelors of Bus. Admin./ Masters of Tourism Admin. as well.

mamabear, call the admissions office. The same thing happened to me last year- got in to SMPA (very selective for freshmen) and got a Presidential scholarship, but no honors. It turned out that somehow my application was not forwarded to Honors (it is a separate committee). Within a day, I got an email that I was accepted.

wait, if youre accepted into the honors program you automatically get a 15,000 scholarship? yearly???

hmmm- I really do not know if honors always=merit money. But leave nothing to chance- call and ask.

can you only get into the honors program now? I was admitted to it but I am curious if it is one of those things where you can easily get in with a good college gpa after a semester or two. cause that makes getting accepted into the honors program much less eventful. i am hoping it is a one shot deal. haha.

from the Honors web page: "Unfortunately, due to the rigorous academic load that freshman and sophomore students have, we do not accept applications from current or transfer students for admittance to the University Honors Program. However, non-Honors students can enroll in some Honors courses"

Beginning last fall the Honors program has a new currciulum. You should look at it carefully to see if it is what you want. Rather than just having the opportunity to take "Honors" designated classes, this program is an interdisciplinary, liberal arts type curriculum. Freshman & Sophomores are required to take 2 specific classes (8 credits) each semester. Here is a link to the page that shows the sample curriculum: University Honors Program

Some students this school year have been unhappy with the structure and requirements of the new program. Others (like my D) love it. The Honors curriculum was a big part of her decision to go to GW and, though there have been some issues because it is a new program, she is very happy with it. I would advise you to look at the curriculum carefully and talk to advisors in the Honors Department to be sure that this program is what you want, as it is different from the Honors programs at many other schools.

mamabear - Well, d. got the Honors program, but no scholarship. So you call and ask to get yours into Honors, and I'll call and get see if I can get mine a scholarship :-)

I called admissions and they said that some of the Honors Program letters were sent separately from admissions packets. So we might be getting ours in the near future. Good luck to everyone!

chaucers_pal, I think we got the better deal! When I was rsvp'ing for the open house on Monday, I had not received our packet in the mail, so I registered her for the honors program reception (thinking optimistically). I guess I will have to call and un-register her.
