Anyone getting excited about admissions? General *squee* thread!

Ok I can gripe tooo…no package from CMU! they sent them, supposedly, last wednesday afternoon " express mail" …what were they thinking? trust the USPS with my son’s future? Nincompoops! WUSTL went ahead and sent everything by DHL (over the top maybe but if you are planning to ask for over $200,000 from the parents, you could at least make sure the darn package arrived a week after sending!!). Their packages arrived the day of the online news which I thought was very nice. In the meantime, according to the CMU forum if you don’t sign up for housing now your child is doomed to live closer to Pitt than to CMU and walk through some scuzzy parts of Oakland…

What is it with schools in general??..if you have it on paper you have it online…just send everything online!! save some trees and save some angst! However, have you tried to negotiate through SAICs webpage…all time worst web page in the world to find what you need!

I can add another gripe. Why do schools send you awards letters without mentioning what tuition, fees and r & b will be for the 2010 - 2011 school year? I look on their web sites and usually can’t find it either. How are we supposed to plan without that info?

post office is my best friend, I will defend
neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom (is it groom?) of night…
express mail should be, eh, express and have tracking number on it that you can check where it is at oneline, if CMU skimped that 60-70 cents, well, there !
Are you sure there was no tiny orange-sh slip in your mail box? express needs sometimes sign in to receive, if nobody’s home he’d take it back to local PO leaving you options to go get it, or let them know when to come again.
What ? why am I saying all these to people who can vote and has dozen degrees?

BandD actually good idea about the tracking if they did send it that way. I will wait until the afternoon but then I will call. I tend to sit and wait for things…just called my office about a request I made last week from HR and sure enough, she had missed my email…I just assumed she was out of town, etc. so lost valuable days instead of following up immediately. Multiple degrees doesn’t seem to make me very good at doing some obvious things…probably is more of a hindrance to smart living…

'tis a trouble with smart folks, they assume other people are as much as capable and responsible which more often than not not…

KCAI finally came thru! Got notification on web (found it strictly by accident, poking around) and emailed admiss rep who said merit letters would be arriving either that day or next. Sure enough, when I got home, there was the letter with $15K/yr merit sent along with faculty viewbook. Crunched the numbers, and with KC’s hike in tuition, MCAD will cost about 4K more. Still waiting for fin aid pkgs, but don’t expect much from that with our way too high EFC. I know D would eat nothing but Ramen noodles if she had to, to go to MCAD! But she got into to all 3 schools she applied to with merit from each and that was a huge boost to her self esteem!

RISD says that admissions decisions go out in the mail tomorrow morning, with no email or online decisions. Given how long it’s been taking for east coast letters to reach us, it’s going to be mid April before we have anything from RISD or Cooper. grump

Another day passed that Pratt didn’t release aid packages. In fact, the mail brought nothing today, so we still don’t have any award letters. All of this makes me long for the days when my son was applying to LACs that sent their FA awards with their decision letters. *

DON’T !!
ramen noodles are the one of the evilest thing that Japanese invented (the other being Nintendo)
though, she could reduce calories, crap and sodium intake significantly while adding tummy full sort of goodness following this procedure.

 1. Boil larger amount of water in the pot and cook noodles until al dente
 2. meanwhile, boil 2/3 of the suggested amount of water and add half packet of the powdered broth. add any leftover vegetables (chopped cabbages carrots leafy greens bean sprout) and tofu, bit of meat if you eat it.
 3. drain the noodles in colander to get rid of mucky starchy fatty water, rinse with hot water if it seems sticky. Put them in the big fancy bowl.
 4. pour broth and veggie over noodles, enjoy!

The saved half packet of powder seasoning is great for spiking meatloaf or stir flies, but then your sodium intake will eventually get even.
If you mean by those in styrofoam cups just add hot water kind, there is not much you can do about it.

Oh, almost forgot, congrats and well done.

Thanks B&D, I was actually kidding about the Ramen, she knows they are full of salt. I’m going to print your directions for her and send them away to MCAD with her. They have apts there so they will be doing their own cooking. And just after I posted that I don’t correct grammar unless asked, I will correct spelling, just because I laughed out loud when I read what to do with leftover packet. Maybe if we run out of money, she will indeed have to eat “stir flies”. Those pesky things are hard to catch sometimes! :-D

WWhhaattt?
I thought I got that L and R when I wrote to friend of mine DC zoo was sending their panda to China flying in cargo plane for breeding,
she almost died " poor Tai Shan is bleed to death or being fried !?"
fly fry fly fry fly… fly and butterfly can fly and fried fly is not good to eat, so is fried panda fly fry fly fry

fix that L for me before you gon give to your D, will you please
or i will be a laughing stock in Minneapolis.

look at this bit!
headline and caption say L, not R!! nuts!!

We might as well all start cooking while we are waiting for the boats from Rhode Island to bring our RISD mail.

Dear Bears and Dogs:
I’m going to guess between the confusing l and r’s and the ramen talk that you are from Japan? If so, don’t listen to anyone that makes comments about your English because I’ll bet ya that nobody on this thread can read a Japanese newspaper!!! or even write a decent sentence in Japanese!!!
Your English is actually entertaining and your spirit comes through which is what matters.

Pony express would be faster…apologies to CMU …another mom on the CMU forum pmd me to point out that CMU provides FA and MA online…I just didn’t notice because it was totally blank–no aid at all–going to VCU to see the other extreme… what practically zero COA yields…

Happy express mail today from Columbia, D2 is accepted!!!

Unfortunately she learns later that she’s not accepted at Yale or Brown. Not upset about Yale, but very sad about Brown. I wish the news had come in reverse order.

Now, what can you all tell me about Columbia’s program? I’m a bit worried because they have so many arts and sciences req’d classes. It’s expensive too, but for tonight at least, I’d like to just enjoy the elation!!

Today has really been devastating for us.

Daughter has been accepted by 7 schools, denied by one, and is waiting on two reaches – but we don’t have financial aid packages yet for almost all of the schools. Today, the award from Pratt came.

It’s more than 30K in loans, and that’s it, other than the Federal aid she gets. Now, they had previously given her a merit scholarship that covers about 20 percent of the total COA, but we’d expected to also get some need-based institutional grants. Instead, her award is the merit scholarship, Pell, SEOG, maxed out Stafford and Perkins, and more than 20K in PLUS loan. This is for an EFC=0.

Now, I expected that there would be some gap, but to have the school not provide even one penny of need-based instituational aid seems pretty awful. I find myself trying to second-guess their reasoning. Is this an admit/deny? Is there something I’m missing? I know that art schools don’t promise to meet need. I know that there are going to be loans – but we’re talking about a PLUS loans totally more than 3+ years of my total goss income.

So, I’ve sent email to her assigned Pratt financial aid contact, to see if they will offer more of an explanation. I’m still really spooked though. What if every package ends up being this bad? I didn’t expect her to have the same great financial aid her brother does, but really, no institutional grants on an EFC=0? None?

Trin - I’m so sorry to hear about your day. 30K in loans is just ridiculous. I don’t know what’s going on with the school, if it’s a tough year for them or what. Maybe try calling and asking humbly for some honesty.

And to everyone else, I’m sorry about my double post. The site was very wiggy awhile ago and now I can’t figure out how to delete it.

It probably isn’t any comfort to you, but my daughter got a merit scholarship ($15k) from Pratt and we also got our financial aid award letter today – with nothing but more than $30k – our EFC is very high, so no Pell Grant or other aid. We live in a very high cost area of NY, so though our income is relatively high, our expenses are higher. She can only go if more of the cost is covered. When I spoke to Pratt people at portfolio review day they said that their endowments and so forth were hit hard with the economic down turn and that they really would not be offering much in the way of scholarships. So we were pleased that she got the offer for $15k. Not enough to go. But that doesn’t take away from the accomplishment in the first place.
sigh.
