Thanks for the encouraging words… will post results.

Bears, thanks for posting about Art Prize. How funny that Grand Rapids, Michigan will such a great place to wander around looking at art, and voting on it, this fall!

^ G, It is now the annual event and I had an article about why Grandrapids but can not locate it.
Good thing is, you don’t have to be there to enter.
Kids, support your own education while making head start of your career!!

That’s what I love about the art world…that events like this can happen, no logic, no real reason, but really interesting results!!

So happy today! PNCA called daughter to tell her they found another 1K in grants, and have given her a 2K work study, and SEOG money. Also, my ex-husband had stopped paying his child support in January (it’s supposed to end in July) and we had really counted on using that for the deposit fees. Today after months of crunch, a direct deposit of child support showed up! It’s not all the deliquent amount, but it’s a start, and enough to pay daughter’s initial matriculation deposit.

Friday she will be attending the PNCA Dean’s reception, and signing off on her paperwork, so that she can celebrate making the choice. Her brother is attending with her. It’s exciting! I know we only have a little over a week until the May 1 deadline. How close is everyone else?

whatt?
deadbeat dad have been giving you $?
that’s way better than me and most folks…

TrinSF - so cool they came up with some $ !! Maybe you’ll see the rest of the support money soon too… My guess is that they had a student that declined their financial aid offer, thus freeing up some money for others. D got a letter from NHIA saying that they were sorry she hadn’t chosen them, but that her admission offer would be good until Fall of 2011 should she decide to transfer. Not sure if the merit would still be good, but that’s the school that’s 10K cheaper than everywhere else, and she wouldn’t have to go thru the whole admission process again, and that’s got to be worth something!

Trin, great news, I’m so glad it is all happening for you and D! We’re getting closer to the deadline but not there yet. I’m pretty sure D2 will choose MICA. D1 has finally chosen Shepherd and if this is the end result, it will not be as expensive as H and I had feared. Phew! And both girls will be relatively close by and happy.

I am jealous…I don’t know when we will hear from CMU. I did call and they said perhaps by tomorrow…if not it will be a long weekend. It will be hard to make a decision with H out of the country and no time to visit again…I can’t believe we are waiting until the last minute.

SAIC reconsidered my financial aid, and gave me an extra 2k in “support grants”

I am almost home free. I have 33k secured (9500 of that Stafford loans)…and tuition is 37k. Was also able to get an exemption on the mandatory laptop purchase, since I already own the exact laptop I would have to buy anyway

So the 2k grant, and saving a minimum of 2k on a new laptop, made SAIC 4 grand cheaper (this was all since monday)

So at that rate, even though I havent figured out apartment expenses yet (but do have a lovely gf that will help as much as the can with those finances)…looks like I am ALMOST home free

congrats awbacon. There are a lot of people out here quietly, and sometimes anonymously, pulling for you and wishing you the very best of luck as you move forward. its a great journey.

Son applied/accepted to two art schools: KCAI and RISD. Tale of 2 Financial Aid Offices.

No RISD funds offered, just Fed qualified funds. RISD Fin Aid reports accepting less than 30% of students who applied and of the 940 or so accepted, only 176 were offered RISD money. Said that RISD awards of $15k - 20k are “rare” with many RISD awards in $3500 range. She said “clearly you have need, no question about it.” She was cordial and candid.

RISD junior’s Mom called us last week, said RISD accepts the students they really want and really want every one accepted to attend. Unfortunately, without the school’s financial aid it is not always possible for every accepted student to afford RISD.

Son has liked KCAI adm coun since meeting at Portfolio Day. Faculty, curriculum, studio space, post-grad options, etc are impressive. He feels KCAI foundation year is similar to RISD first year.

KCAI adm coun called yesterday with a generous grant in addition to the $15k Trustee scholarship. This was a huge blessing. We are going to KC this weekend for first time visit. KCAI regional adm coun has been very attentive and responsive. KCAI staff on phone are helpful. Very grateful for the KCAI investment in son’s education! S off to KCAI and D will be at University of Central AR in Conway, lovely campus, great PR and theatre program.

Hope all of your sons and daughters find peace in decision-making and pride in their achievements. Congrats to all the other parents! Hope sharing this info helps you as much as reading your posts have helped me these last few months. Thanks and Cheers for our May grads!

awbacon — Congrats on the good SAIC news for you! Son’s friend is headed to SAIC in painting — fantastic school!

So thrilled to hear about AWBacon’s good news…excellent!

and to MomofTwins…thanks for the RISD insight and it sounds as if the other school really came through for you…excellent!

^^ that is so very RISD
what are they gonna do indeed 940 klds put deposit down and show up in Sep?
i can see the certain parent willingly manning phone for the great Maeda.

woops little drae is visiting there today,
no offense ( I mean not on you, never)

KCAI rocks, congrats !!!

Well our let down is very much tempered by good news from the KCAI and SAIC for others! Great news and sounds like feeling the love is a big part of feeling like you belong at a particular school. No help from CMU…S says he is set on VCU…can’t justify an art degree for $200,000. While we support his sense of economy (I am, after all, an economist)…I am not convinced that VCU is the best place for him …great art school…but…what would you advise a kid who still stays up all night to watch the supercollider in europe ramp up. ?

take gap year and embrace mac, get over the fear of NYC and come to Cooper and teach my kid algebra?
save $ for Yale grad or Oxbridge study abroad whatnot when he become bigshot I get bragging right?
i’d like either way.

http://www.artistswanted.org/

and this is for you fammom famkid
be this guy or top him off so I will brag my mouth off.

Still, still, still on the fence. Do we take the plunge even when kid doesn’t seem ready or wait… MICA offered another $2500/year on top of other scholarships… but still looking at PLUS loan of 20k…
I leave for job interview in Boulder, CO tomorrow. Maybe we’ll get a break that way. In the meantime, biting nails…
