greenwitch: I agree, the Pratt email was happy – so happy that we didn’t even initially notice the very generous merit award! Even MORE happy! It makes us so optimistic for their need-based package!

^^^I had no idea that Pratt was generous with merit aid. We had no expectations, which makes it all even sweeter! Their need-based package should be just as good.

greenwitch: I have gotten so used to seeing art school merit letters that give a nice amount and the say “Over the course of 4 years”. So, they’ll say it’s a 15K scholarship – but that’s for the whole 4 years, less than 4K a year. Yeah, not so much. So I just glanced at the Pratt number and was sort of unimpressed. It was only later that we realized that it was “renewable yearly” and that their figure was just for freshman year. That makes it the highest amount she has been offered so far, and we did more happy dancing. :-)

^^^I agree. We’ve gotten those other letters, and at first your heart nearly stops, then you realize it is “over all 4 years”. Such a tease! I’m glad Pratt was more honest and up front about it.

TrinSF- given how many schools your D got into, and then to get a rejection from MICA makes MICA rejection sound like its a mistake. Especially in light of top 25% portfolio letter. And seriously a 3.1 GPA is pretty good. Would you or your D be into making a call? It can’t hurt. Pratt is pretty great though! Congratulations to your D. We visited Pratt and I loved it.

I dont mean call and beg, but didnt she already put all that effort into the scholarship applications? I mean just call and make sure they got the right letter to the right person.

Yep, everyone saw what happened to awbacon with SAIC and to valtergeorge with Cooper. Certainly couldn’t hurt - if they really have turned her down, then she has nothing to lose. If they did make a mistake, you’d never know.

Yes give a call just to check.

Status Update : I sent my app in on Jan 10, its almost Apr 1st, and I am still waiting to find out. Seriously…its getting pretty tiring opening the mailbox every day and finding nothing from SAIC

Tick tock…patience clock

The thing is, if MICA made a mistake and was going to admit, is she going to get full aid from them, too? I imagine not. We’ll wait on Pratt and the last decisions next week (RISD and Cooper) and then see. Daughter basically feels that if Pratt gives her enough aid, she will go there.

Still no word from CMU…some kids have gotten packages but not here…S says he is not going to check online but wait for the letter on Monday. He is a little freaked by the nightmare on friday–Lots of blood on the ground (figuratively) because UVA announced on Friday and is the top choice for many kids at our high school…cheap, instate top 20 …what’s not to love except their art department asked for the portfolio on slides only…S just laughed when I had suggested UVA…lucky him…it is easier to get into CMU by far than UVA. The whole school is either overjoyed or super depressed. One of his best friends didn’t get in but girlfriend did? Ouch!

I am confused about the MICA discussion, trinsf. Once your application is complete, they send the scholarship application packet…they do accept portfolios but never have I heard of any attempt to say if someone is a finalist since there is no way they could know until scholarship packages are in near the end of March. They emphasize very strongly in the cover letter of the scholarship packet that students may be applying for scholarships without knowing the outcome of their application for admisison. Strange but quite clear.

Still, the admissions people shouldn’t have given such positive signs if kid wasn’t very likely to be accepted. I would definitely call. We had an email saying that the scholarship committee was meeting this weekend, so I don’t know what this means about finalist meeting/weekend. I think they realize that kids will be getting their final packets this week so if MICA wants to get committed students they need to move fast so that families can evaluate the finances/fit etc.

Best of luck to those awaiting RISD and Cooper!

fineartsmajormom: In MICA terms, a “scholarship finalist” is anyone they sent the scholarship application packet to, who sent it back. It came up on their FB page, because an applicant asked if an invitation to the scholarship finalist open house meant they were in some finalist category. The adcom replied there that no, ‘finalist’ means anyone who submitted any part of the scholarship packet. My understanding is that not every applicant who fills out the scholarship application part of the original application gets the big scholarship packet sent back to work on.

I agree with you that they were quite clear that you could be invited to apply for scholarships but not be admitted. As I think I said in another thread (or maybe this one), daughter got the “top 25 percent of reviewed portfolios” letter, and got a lot of positive feedback on portfolio, so we assume this is all academic. (And by academic, I mean that it’s related to her acaemic performance, scores, GPA, fall transcript.)

Got a phone call from MCAD Friday telling us that my D received MCAD’s Friends of MCAD Scholarship! Was more than NHIA’s, and there’s happy dances at our house. I have to say that the adcom there has been absolutely wonderful, keeping in touch by email and phone. KCAI not so much - BTW, we are STILL waiting… And no response at all to a request for a college catalog. Now they’d have to come up with close to a free ride for us to consider them.

wow congrats! means entire balance wise MCAD<nh? or=“” the=“” merit=“” money=“” mcad=“”>NH but COA wise MCAD is still higher but you don’t mind?
Good thing comes in three, don’t let KCAI go just yet, remember, warm cookies…
My kid will go see his camp friend at MCAD next weekend.
See what midwest does to the jaded snoot.</nh?>

Merit money more, but COA still higher. Right now, we are happy with that, and have not let KC go yet. Like Leo Durocher said when he was with the Cubs, “It’s not over 'til it’s over”. You mean your kid is snoot or his friend?

Of course it’s my kid. That’s what happens when parents want so much to be “in” and do all supposedly right thing that you were not meant to be.
I do hope he sees what really important in art making, which he did learn here and there but forgets every time go see obnoxious shows in Chelsea or go do work mic running at lectures and stuff. Because that’s where money and glam are - it is hard to be grounded and thinking/working about it every day after day after day with something you like doing but not “in”

Leo Durocher! The era!!

redbug119: Yay! I’m so glad that one of your child’s top choices is doing good by yall! We’re still waiting on aid packages, but we went to an admitted student reception for SAIC today and it was very nice. :-)

seems like good vibes all around! S got into CMU!! yaaay! He didn’t mean to check but he was already logged into CMU page so when he opened the internet…there it was! He is radiating peace and happiness. No happy dances…more like grins, high fives and more grins. He is so thrilled. He started worrying about the cost and I say…wait for the package…for now just enjoy the feeling. We’ll deal with cost tomorrow or the next day. Just enjoy!

I sort of knew this was gonna happen no surprises but congrats a ton.
let famkid invent something in your garage during summer that he can pay off with patent money, not parent money.

fammom -
My S got into CMU too! The day before he heard from Pratt. Very happy guy. So we wait for RISD. It looks like it will be down to Pratt, CMU, Syracuse, U of C and RISD if he gets in. We started our spread sheet to compare costs/aid and I’ve been talking with him about making a list of pros and cons for each school. (He doesn’t have a 1st choice)

Congratulations to all of you on all of this good news.

classmates classmates !!!
famkid, meet little draemon, Little draemon, meet famkid!!
… Do ID and fine art share anything? foundation? Y’all should meet, really. If you go to accepted kids’day, get hotel room next door to each other and leave the door open in between so they can run around and jump from the bed to bed.
Maybe you get discount, buy one get one free. At least pancakes or extra soda.
owwwwww I am jealous.

Just saw KCAI posted their decisions on line, available March 27, but letter that pops up when you click on the decision link is dated March 23, so hopefully the packet is on its way with maybe some $$ in it. But she got in, and she’ll be happy about that!
