What were the impressions after accepted weekend besides the gorgeous weather? Can't tell if the student population is diverse( hippie, prep, social action types etc.) D. felt maybe alot of kids looking for a great party atmosphere. Any thoughts on this?

i went…i was pleasantly surprised that there actually was some diversity and i met some pretty cool people. of course there was a large number of your typical sorority girls and frat boys, but some of them seemed nice instead of stuck up. there were also a bunch of community service organizations that you can get involved in, and all of those people were nice to talk to. my biggest concern was the lack of diversity, but that didnt seem to be too big of an issue to me after visiting. i’m pretty sure i’m gonna go there now :)

good to hear–where are you from?-I am from Maine and visiting in 2 weeks. Does it seem hugely female?

My D went a couple weeks ago–not on a special visit day–and she really liked it. She was afraid it wouldn’t feel diverse, either, but her impression was, lots of different types of students. Talked to a few profs and liked what she heard about academics, which are very important to her. She’s seriously considering it.

We live in a large, midwestern city in a liberal/diverse area; she thought she’d feel more at home in a big city or NE…a counselor recommended CofC, so she applied, more as a back-up really. However, she was pleasantly surprised. After the visit it went from a distant possibility to a frontrunner. Didn’t hurt that it was beautiful and warm and by the ocean.

Still waiting on a couple RD schools before final decision.

virginia. I didn’t feel like there was an overwhelming majority of girls, but I did sense a little bit of an unbalance. Nothing too big to be a dealbreaker though

In this thread there was some discussion about the weekend, in case you hadn’t seen it… http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-charleston/871736-academics-cofc.html

We went to Accepted Students Weekend and on our tour, the guide mentioned that girls outnumber boys but that seems to be the case at every college/university my son has visited. I really think more girls than boys were born in the early 90’s!

We had a great weekend and my son really liked the school. I posted in the other thread, “Academics at CofC” if you care to read that.

We were very impressed with the school. The professors were very informative and appeared to be very approachable My D loved the school and how genuine and down to earth the students that we met seemed to be . The dorms were ok- not good and not bad but I would suggest that they check to see that the rooms that they show are a little cleaner - It was kinda gross. The campus was very vibrant and the surrounding area was just charming. It was so appealing that we would have put down our deposit that weekend if they had a nursing program. There seemed to be a group for everyone and I loved the southern hospitality. All in all it was a great weekend.

Kabsmom - I agree about the dorms. We saw a couple of rooms that could have been a little neater, but…that’s college. The dorms were the only real downside, IMO. I really didn’t like the “open to the outside” door thing - all I could think about, living in the South, were all the bugs that would be letting themselves in!

I think only College Lodge has doors that open to the outside. Yeah, and bugs and mold. But the great thing about CL is that the kids spend a lot of time in the common area because, unlike the newer dorms, they don’t have private sitting rooms/suites. My son reports that CL is more social than the other dorms and it is harder for shy kids to “hide.” He’s going to be an RA in Macalister next year and I think he is going to miss the friendly CL atmosphere. As for bugs, this is South Carolina. Since when do bugs need an open door to find a way into your home?!

My D is a junior at CofC and loves it and tells me that the nearby Citadel is all male and this helps balance out the male-female ratio in the Charleston college community.
