Anyone going to a summer music program this year?

D got waitlisted at Brevard but got accepted to GSU’s Harrower Opera Workshop.

S2 is going to Songfest at Colburn in June. Haven’t heard yet from Oberlin or Westminster Choir College (for voice). They are both in July so he will have to decide between the two if accepted.

S was accepted to MAW, Taos, Kneisel Hall and Yellow Barn Junior Program. For Yellow Barn, he applied for senior program but was placed in junior program because of his age. He decided to go to Taos. It was very hard for him to turn down MAW and Kneisel Hall but he felt he would learn the most in Taos. Now, he has to get into a college!

My S will go to Heifetz in this summer. Last summer, he enjoyed that program.

My D (viola) and my S (trumpet) will be going to Chile with Youth Orchestra of the Americas.

Younger S (violin) deciding between Greenwood and Kinhaven senior camp. Any thoughts on this? We need to decide VERY soon. Older college bound S going to Apple Hill Chamber Music (cello) and hopefully Boston Conservatroy Composition Intensive.

D3 went to Apple Hill last summer and absolutely loved it there.

Wow, Tomdug! YOA is my daughter’s dream. She applied this year and got waitlisted.

Hi momtheboss,

We are pretty excited that they both got in! It seems like a great program. D is a more seasoned traveler than S, so that’s a little reassuring for us. He has very limited solo travel experience. I hope your D gets off the wait list!

MY D did both Kinhaven and Greenwood and we would say Greenwood Absolutely!!! As others have said here, the chamber program at Kinhaven is not quite “on par”; but at Greenwood the chamber is excellent as is the orchestra. The staff is also great - very talented and caring. I like that the college age couselors (all music majors) also participate in the chamber program alongside the students. It really gives the kids something to aspire to.

Also, the cabins/new barn/kitchen/pool are all superior.

flute1298, Thanks for the info. Can I ask if you daughter did senior at both? My son did 3 years at Junior Greenwood and loved it but we know kids who are serious musicians who also loved Kinhaven. This is a hard one as there are good things to like about both of them. Now you can study a little composition at Kinahven which is one reason it is a bit of a draw. So many good choices. Need to decide today.

My D will be spending the summer at Aspen this year. Hoping it will be a wonderful experience for her.

D (Flute, 10th grade) Accepted at BUTI Wind Ensemble (waitlisted orchestra), $3,500 scholarship; Brevard $2,200 scholarship; waitlisted at Interlochen. Waiting to hear how much performing she will do with Brevard Symphony before she makes a decision. Apparently at Brevard, accepted HS students get placed in both the Symphony and Band. She would be disappointed if she commited then got limited time with the Symphony. Our hope is that she can play in both groups the entire time not switching off like it appears. they might do. She really wants to be on the Shosty 5 concert. She did BUTI Wind Ensemble last year but reallyl go the feeling that the W.E. kids were afterthoughts to the program. Still, she had an amazing experience. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

I would choose Greenwood in a heartbeat. The composition aspect of Kinhaven was nice (I went there last year as a pianist), but I think that musically Greenwood is quite above Kinhaven: in general, what I have gathered from multiple accounts is that the focus at Greenwood is more on the music than at Kinhaven. Despite some very good players and a few good coaches, there was a lot of mediocre playing at Kinhaven. The orchestra was head-and-shoulders above the chamber ensembles, but still… the violin teachers (Nick, Peter, and Deborah especially) were stronger than some of the other faculty, but I’m sure Greenwood at least has their match.

I know the piano teacher at Greenwood personally, and she’s a very nice person and excellent teacher (if a tad old-fashioned in terms of what students “should” be playing - Beethoven before Bartok, etc - which is reasonable but could be a turn-off). Who knows, your son may end up with her as a coach!

I know it’s not a prestigious music program like everyone has mentioned, but I will be working at a summer music camp that’s at my high school, teaching elementary and middle-schoolers percussion! Not sure if it will be volunteer or pay (I hope pay), but either way I’m doing it because I enjoy it and find the experience beneficial. :)

@RandomAc1206, if becoming a music educator is your goal, you are doing something TOTALLY prestigious toward your discipline over anything our kids our doing toward performance! My D can practice day in and day out, play with these great youth orchestras and summer programs, but nothing prepares a teacher for teaching like REALLY TEACHING does. As a band director myself, I can assure you that you are entering a far more mysterious and exciting world by actually facing KIDS and getting them to the next level. My D and all the people with kids going to performing festivals know basically what to expect. YOU are going into the unexpected and none of us can help you there. We can only admire you for delving into a profession that inspires our kids to seek out the arts as a career or at the very least a valuable component to their overall success. Thanks for sharing your summer goals and please do not hesitate to seek help or advice whenever you may need it. Best of luck in your exploration of the greatest most rewarding profession!

dgs650,

Thank you, that means quite a lot! Definitely looking forward to starting college as a Music Ed major next year. I’m stoked! There are so many opportunities to explore there, and I’ll be getting a lot of freedom in choosing classes.

But yeah, nothing quite compares to sharing something you enjoy with others, and watching them grow because of it. And thanks for the help offer; I’ll definitely ask here if I need any advice.

I’m marching drum corps, if that counts :stuck_out_tongue: I’d love to do a music composition program, but I leave a week before school ends for tour and get back the day before my high school band camp.

S2 just received his acceptance to Oberlin for voice. Now just waiting to hear from Westminster. We’ve heard great things about both programs. But, if he chooses Westminster he will get to visit NYC (he’s never been before). I think that sounds a bit more fun to him than rural Ohio.

Going to Rocky Ridge this summer for viola. Does anyone have any experience with it–it’s hard to find people who’ve been.
