D will be at Texas Music Festival.

Buranri, drumcorp counts. My son did it his last two years of highschool.

This year he will be completing his general ed classes at our local community college, but classes end in the middle of July and high school bandcamp usually starts the last week of July, so he hopes to be able to get a bandcamp job for the last few weeks before he returns to college.

D will be attending the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute hosted by the University of Denver. Just a one week program, but the faculty list is impressive and she’s heard good things about it from her peers.

S, Percussion, attending BUTI Orchestra. Access to Tim Genis, Frank Epstein, Will Hudgins, Dan Bauch, Kyle Brightwell-incredible. Free BSO concerts all summer-priceless.

S, second year of college, is attending Eastern Music Festival as a double bassist. Sister went there years ago while in high school and loved it.

got accepted to Westminster’s solo vocal program, headed there in July!

majorminor7: My S also got accepted to Westminster’s Solo Artist. He is going to SongFest in LA in June, Westminster in July. Turned down Oberlin - hope that moves someone off the waiting list!

My D just got her acceptance letter today to MPulse Vocal Arts Institute at U of Michigan. She’s so excited to be going back for a second summer!

I applied to LSU’s Opera Camp. I’m hoping to hear back soon. I chose to apply to this program because it is very affordable and convenient for me(I live 15 minutes from Baton Rouge). It’s a 1-week $500 program(includes housing and meals) for anyone still interested. Final deadline is May 1st. I hope I get in!

Are there any world music summer camps or percussion camps?
Thanks.

The deadline has passed for this year - but, for percussion in future summers check out So Percussion’s Summer Institute at Princeton: [S? Percussion | So Percussion Summer Institute (SoSI)](http://sopercussion.com/summerinstitute/)

Csssa ( for California residents/High School) has a strong world music component (African drumming and Gamelan) [CSSSA: The Music Program](Music - CSSSA) Applications and acceptances are already out–but possibly next year?

Brevard Music Center for Piano. Hopefully I can study with the teacher I want! Last year I went to Interlochen Arts Camp which was so awesome, but I am done with the Melody Freeze and ready for the Gelato Cart <3

Interlochen has a week long intensive percussion institute. The bright side is that you do not live in the cabins, but the dorms where the academy kids live, but the food remains the same… but about everyday you get intensive lessons and a master class. My friend went and loved it. Another “plus” is that for that week you do not have to wear the uniform(which i loved). Just a lanyard.

My S was accepted into the Stanford Jazz Residency. He also received a scholarship for most of the $1800 tuition. LOL, now I guess I have to come up with a r/t plane ticket.

Look at birch creek for percussion/world music. Liam Teague is conducting steel bands again this year.

My daughter has been going to music camps and festivals, sometime more than one per summer, since she was ten. Honestly, she was feeling a little burnt-out. This year, she is taking a break! She did apply to two festivals where she was waitlisted, and then withdrew from the list to accept an invite to go on tour with her school orchestra. She will get a free performing-trip to London during the Olympics (!) and is allowed at minimal cost to extend her return ticket for a few weeks. She is going to travel around Europe with a friend who has cousins and contact points in a number of countries. (Before this, she will go to Guatemala on a school-related, student-directed arts outreach trip to work with kids with cerebral palsy and developmental disorders.) She will also have a few weeks at home to practice, take a few lessons, and hang out with her sisters.

I’m so excited for her-- for so many years she has gone straight from school to summer programs, working all the time at her music or money-earning jobs, with almost no time to do stuff like sit in a beautiful garden or tour a museum. Any travel she has done has been strictly music-focused, often at the expense of being able to see the sights on soak in a culture. Two weeks in Europe doesn’t seem like a lot, but for her it’s huge.

Back in November, when disucssing summer plans, her teacher said to her, “Don’t go to a festival. Go to Europe and travel.” The point was to nurture her soul and person. At that juncture, it seemed like an impossible suggestion, but then it all fell into place.

She will probably go back on the festival circuit next year, but this is a welcome change.

Good for her! And good for her teacher for encouraging personal discovery (and FUN).

My D (age 14) is attending Penn State University music camp, choir, soprano. The courses look interesting. It’s only one week, much more affordable for us and for her first experience we have high hopes that it is a positive experience for her.

99% likely going to Adamant Music School in Vermont. Very excited.
