Anyone good with computers?

Ever since I have had this problem, people at my school have referred to my problem as the blue screen of death. I have an IBM thinkpad and whenever I boot up the computer, it starts windows and then quickly turns to the a blue screen with words on it. However, I can’t read the screen fast enough to see what the problem is. It runs on Microsoft XP, which I, perhaps, think is the problem. After it turns to the blue screen, the computer shuts down fast. I’ve run Symantec on the computer and it says that it doesn’t have any viruses. What do you guys think I could do to fix the blue screen of death. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Sseeing as how we are talking to Gods on CC, I would be quite baffled if one out there doesn’t know how to fix this innocent, but deadly problem of mine.

you probably need to reformat your computer, erasing everything and reinstalling windows and all.

If you have system disks that came from ibm, you might put them in, turn on your computer, and boot from the disks. You can most likely do the deed from there following on screen instructions and such. Be cautioned that this would be a last resort and you would lose all data...

For newer (or maybe all) thinkpads, to do a format and reinstall, follow the instructions during the first few seconds of bootup. The files are held on a separate hard disk partition rather than on CD's.

Ok, how do you reformat your computer...like how do you delete everything off the computer and reload everything back on?

(Follow my instructions, above)

Restart in boot-mode.

Your recovery software probably will allow you to boot from your cd, or recovery partition, then, if you have another hard drive, copy your files from your internal hard drive to this backup drive. This is not easy drag and drop backup, but old school DOS commands. Once you have backed up your files, you can reformat the internal hard drive. You will lose everything on this drive in the process. Your backup will permit you to restore your files, but you will have to reinstall all your programs.

if your thinkpad is under warranty, you dont have a problem. My thinkpad broke down, we called them asking for software to reinstall, the cd's arrived in 15 hours the next morning for free obviously. As opposed to Joes and Johns with an Indian accent that you see with Dell or others, IBM customer service is simple amazing and is the best. By far. Call them, give them information about your computer. The next day, they'll get it fixed. I dont know if this will last, however, as the computers portion of IBM was recently purchased by some Japanese company.

I have had the same good experience with IBM service. I don't know where the support people were located, but I did get good help from some people with Indian accents. Americans are not the only people in the world who know computers.
