my IBM just started not working today

i am soo serious, my thing just all of a sudden after running a diagnostic test, the tech support person told me to do, my computer no longer turns on, i called up, the guy said that my mother-board is fried. 3,000 dollar machine, this is what i get?

Oh, man. All my sympathy. You have to feel really frustrated. Was it out of warranty?

did u partition ur harddrive?

Will it not power up at all or not run the operating system?

it won't even power up

wat does partition ur hard-drive mean?

i did nothing to the hard-drive, kept everything the way it came to me

this baby has a 2.13 Pent M, 1024 MB RAM, 128 ATI Radeon Video Card
80 GB hard-drive

Did you buy it with a warranty? Sometimes when you don't, they input a virus that messes up the computer so you purchase another computer from them again. Such scams...

I had the same problem last summer. I took my computer overseas and used a wrong power supply cord and it fried the mother-board. I just got a new computer, it wasn't worth it to me to replace it.

I would check if it is still under warranty. That would suck to have to replace it.

What does partioning a hard drive have to do with a fried mother board?

Laptop or desktop machine?

Either way, when you power up, does the power switch light up and stay lit? Do you hear the optical and the hard drive spin up? If these things don't spin up or light up, your problem is likely the power supply.

If the power switch light and the drives do spin up, does your monitor show any signs of life? If you get nothing, then your board is probably dead. Just make sure your power supply is working.

Did you ever upgrade your video card after you bought your computer? The more powerful your video card, the more power you will need to run it properly. Over time, the video card will over-tax your power supply and cause it to fail...

Good luck!

its a brand new lap top, it is under warranty, ibm is picking it up and fixing it. I am not worried, b/c if they can't fix it, i get a new computer.

First off you have an IBM, that's the first problem. Second off you said that "it won't even power up" if it won't even power up, perhaps you should check the battery. I wouldn't go straight to the mobo if it's not even turning on.

Yea 3k is overpriced. IBM and Sony's prices are outrageous.

first of all, IBM doesnt exist (in retailing PCs, anyway)
second of all, its Lenovo now (aka why i just bought a T43, to support Chinese industries)
third of all, thinkpads are the premier business laptops in the world, so dont compare us with that sony stuff
fourth of all, sympathies to the OP (mine was only a modest 2K)

well, I think they want to keep calling them IBM's for now because of the trusted name. Nobody wants to buy from a chinese manufacturer

Be careful...Kenneth has x-treme chinese pride ;).

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad, it rocks and I have had it since June with not 1 problem. Rock solid perfect computer in comparison to all the other people I know with their Dells that constantly need restarting and repair.

I've had two consecutive Dell laptops, each 900. Sure, they're not as sturdy as the thinkpads, but treat em right and they will last. Not everone is going to pay 2x as much for a computer with the same specs.

IBM makes sturdy computers the only things I don't like about them are:
1) They are uglier than ugly
2) Not good with multimedia

If they redesigned them I would sure as heck buy them.

But don't you hate when you get the duds of items. They manufacture thousands of them so the chances of getting the dud is like 1 in a big number.

lol it certainly seems lik it TropicalTriceps. Too bad he's not going about it in the right way.

ThinkPads are really good. hopkinslax, i don't think they're ugly at all, but I guess I can certainly see where you're coming from. The look is more of an acquired taste :)

As for the price, they're really not all that expensive. Like most machines, they go on sale every now and then, and if you're lucky you can get a good deal.

They are definitely rock-solid. That's why I bought mine, and I really hope lenovo can keep up with the IBM name.
