Anyone have advice on overnight stay?

Hey guys I signed up to do an overnight stay on a Thursday night before orientation. Anybody have any advice on what kind of things I should expect?? Anyone also doing one for business
Scholars on march 7th?

I’m a host this semester for all 3. They try to match you with someone in the program you are going into, but hosting is a volunteer thing so that isn’t always possible. As for what to expect they have activities and stuff planned that are optional to stay and do with other high risers or you can go off and do whatever you want with your host until morning. I can let you know more probably after training next week

Bring a sleeping bag and pillow…chances are you are sleeping on the floor since there are no “guest” beds in the dorms.

I signed my son up for the March 8th accepted day, but it looked like the night before was not available. Only April 11th night was available. He is an Engineering Major…should I call to see if there are any over nights for the March 7th date?

There aren’t any more for march 7th. There are usually more soon-to-be freshman applying for the overnight stay then there are volunteers for people to place them with. There is often even a waitlist. It will still be a good opportunity for him to spend the night on campus if he hasn’t already.

@bestmomever - While overnight stays are great, for engineering students, the more important program is the engineering preview. There are two dates: March 7th and March 24th. Sign up for one asap. If you are OOS, and you are coming in for March 8th accepted students’ day, it’s worth booking a hotel (I usually stay at Hampton Inn on Rt 1 - I like that it’s next to an IHOP and it’s decent - they offer AAA discounts also)

If you are IS, and not far, you can obviously go to either day, and may as well go to March 24th (Sunday night).

It is at the engineering preview that you learn specifics about the engineering program, can ask questions about the different majors (they have tables set up with students from each discipline), get some insight on teachers/classes, learn about SEEDS programs (mentors, FYSE, etc) and the VIRTUS/FLEXUS programs among other things. There are lots of current students present to answer questions as well as professors, financial aid reps and others.

I thought it was just as, if not more, helpful than the accepted students’ day just because it is geared to engineering students, which is a particularly intense major.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to pm me. I have a freshman engineer who is also in scholars. Maryland has a GREAT engineering program with lots of support systems for engineering students.

Also, forgot to mention…

They also offer tours of at least the Kim Building (if I recall correctly) which is really cool. It’s an “open” building designed for engineering students to see the “guts” of what makes things work (you can watch the elevator mechanism, see the duct/electrical work and there are two different types of bridges from one part of the building to the other so you can see how different they “feel” as you walk across). Even though the “open” concept sounds like it would be unattractive, it really isn’t - it’s designed extremely well.

A big question “we” had was if you get a good score on Calc AP exam, is it better to start with Calc 3 or just start at Calc 1 since it is such a foundation for engineering and college level class may be more extensive than high school AP class. They don’t give you an answer because it is an individual decision/preference, but hearing diff opinions with pros and cons def helps.

Anyone think that the stay will be canceled due to weather, or is it definitely on?

barely got snow, so its on.
