Anyone have questions about Rutgers? I feel like helping.

mushaboom: i don’t think the app will be up until december or january, like it was last year. but you should definitely apply. i think you do enough to get it. and enthusiasm is always a plus C:

the social life is about as social as you want it to be. it’s pretty easy to find a party, especially if you know the right people. you can also–i don’t do this–follow huge groups of people as they get off the bus on thursday friday saturday night after 11pm and see where they go to find them. also this is assuming by ‘social’ you mean ‘party’. new brunswick also has kind of an underground music scene that is partyl run by colabarts (collaborative arts whose objective is to bring culture into nb). the concerts are kind of hush, but if you know the right people, you can go to concerts on a weekly basis for free. you can also avoid the whole party scene and just hang out with friends, which is kind of stating the obvious. not everyone drinks, but a large percentage of the population here do. i don’t know, this is a pretty general question. so i’m just going to say ‘yes, the social life here is good.’

in my opinion, yes. people might see this very differently, though. for every attractive guy, i’d say there are at least ten attractive girls. of course, this is just my opinion. i have met many sketchy and/or unattractive men (the two aren’t mutually exclusive), but i feel like the girls are very pretty and amiable. it depends also what kind of girls you think are attractive. like blonde and orange, to me, are just not…too…nice to look at, but some guys might think differently. (i’m not a dude, btw. and no offenseee)

not really. i mean, rutgers does not have its own strain of std like people say. stds are probably everywhere, at other colleges, too. cornell had a syphilis outbreak last semester soooo yeahh. just be…smart.

the food is somewhere from decent to good. i think it’s just okay, but i’ve had friends come from other schools (ie villa nova, udel, uillinois) and they say that it’s waay better than their food. which i find kind of surprising but the best dining halls are on busch and douglass. tillet has good takeout and brower food will just fill you up. ohh and brower has the best ice cream! there is a variety of options thoughh. i got kind of bored of dining hall food though by the end of the year, i must say.

i’d say, yes. haven’t heard many good things about the pledging process. there is a thread on frats on this forum if you want more information.

hope this was helpful!

Thanks! mind answering a few questions that are more specific?

Are clubs active? Political clubs? Clubs related to majors?

Will I receive any help receiving internships for my major? Maybe research opportunities?(Economics)

How difficult is the course work?

Are there any… well… smart girls? I should of been more specific with the “Attractive girls” thing. I don’t really like those orange tanning salon jersey girls. too easy/usually stupid. I’m more into the … i guess theater/nerdy/smart/cute type?

Do people have school spirit?

Are all on-campus jobs reserved for minorities? (Please don’t deny universities don’t do this. A lot of them do.)

That underground concert thing sounds great! what kind of music? Is it hard to get involved? Mostly local bands?

of course, i don’t mind! C:

yes, clubs here are very, very active. i’m not too into the political activism, but i have a good friend who is. democrats for change is one in particular that comes to mind. tent state university, i was somewhat a part of last semester. it was tons of fun. here is more info: [Welcome to Tent State University | Tent State University](http://www.tentstate.com/) there is of course the governing and campus councils. mason gross even has one. and there are clubs for some majors. i don’t know too much about major-specific clubs but at the involvement fair last september, i remember picking up some info about some of these. yeahhh so i’m not too familiar with political clubs, but i’ve found that rutgers has a club for just about anything. probably one of the only pluses of going to such a huge university.

yes. i’m part of douglass residential college, and that’s a little different because they really cater to internship and job opportunities for its female students. i’m not too sure about internship opportunities outside of rutgers, but i’m sure that career services can help you out there. i know some bs students who have internships at johnson and johnson (its hq are in nb) and pfizer and i’m sure that rutgers helped them out with that. perhaps someone else has more information?

I am an aresty research assistant for the next academic year. more info: [ARC: Getting Started](http://aresty.rutgers.edu/start.htm) and they do offer some research opportunities that are economics and business-related: [ARC and you get $500 a semester, working 5 days a week. it’s a pretty good deal, and looks awesome on a resume.

i don’t really know how to answer this question because the difficulty of courses vary. it really depends on your major and your own work ethic. i think it’s possible for anyone to get a 4.0 if they work hard enough. so far, my courses have been pretty manageable, but i’ve just been taking gen ed requirements mostly.

yes! of coursee! that little description at the end there describes like 3/4s of my friends C: especially on douglass you’ll be finding those cute theater-nerd types. there are many intellectual girls here. i guess it would just seem more difficult to find them since blonde and orange are pretty ubiquitous.

yes. though the school spirit may be kind of wavering with the budget cuts, increasing tuition, and other problems that rutgers is facing right now.

a lot of on-campus jobs are reserved for work/study, such as working at the dining hall, libraries, learning centers, assistants for departments. and i did notice that a lot of people at my work/study job are minorities, so i wouldn’t deny it. but i have noticed the jobs that require more training and qualifications (ie working at the oit labs, tutor at the lrc) are not work/study, and there are not as many minorities. and you can always do research with a professor.

here is the website for colab: Collaborative Arts](http://aresty.rutgers.edu/ra20092010.htm) from what i’ve seen, mostly local bands perform. and as for it being difficult to get involved, a lot of the concerts are in basements of some houses in nb, so they are kind of discreet. but a lot of the people who are in colab also are part of the music scene, so it’s not too hard to become a part of.

just on the “smart” girls question, I went to SWE (society of women engineers) Night and many of those girls were quite pretty and smart. (unless you don’t think engineering is difficult? ;D)

this thread is also really helpful! thanks to all you guys.

im working on getting dorm stuff together now:)

any tips on what’s important to have?

also, i want to get bed risers that make my bed high enough i fit like stackable boxes under it. where can i buy these/how do we install them/is it difficult/how high can we make them? or are they even worth it?

and about our schedules…we don’t get them until late august. do this mean we have no summer reading or work?

thanks!

Here are another round of questions if anyone wishes to help!

Are the advisers any helpful? I’ve heard they’re crap at rutgers.

Is it possible to get around with a car without it being a huge hassle?

would you marry me?

are people friendly/open?

Is it hard to attain sports tickets?

ahh it’s me again, if you still want my input

sort of. my honors adviser keeps telling me that the classes i want to take are too hard and that i should take bs classes like theater appreciation and stuff or dry classes i have no interest in. then i do well in those classes that are apparently too hard for me, and not as well in the classes she recommends. shouldn’t they be more encouraging? and she doesn’t really know much about the program i want to do, but she does refer me to some knowledgeable people, which is helpful. she also thinks I’m a math major (i want to study english amd haven’t taken a single math course at rutgers. plus i’m asian, so i guess i could see why she jumped to that conclusion. she’s a nice woman, but i couldn’t help thinking that was a little…weird). she barely knows my name. none of them really will.

you won’t be able to drive your car to your classes. you have to get a parking pass, leave your car wherever they tell you to, then take the buses. sooo it might be a little unwieldy.

no

yes.

no, especially if you get them early. i always get emails and notifications whenever tickets for home games go on sale.

alanavm:

hmm dorm stuff that you’ll need. i feel like i brought entirely too much to college. and i don’t really know what to suggest without seeming too obvious. get a closet organizer, you knoww, one of those things that you hang in your closet to make shelves. i didn’t really use mine, but a lot of my dormmates found it useful. i just kind of used the drawer space for clothes. also, consider how much you’ll be going home or how much you’ll be seeing your parents. because i ran out of a lot of toiletry-related, food-related things since i didn’t go home very often. and if you’ll be going home a lot, don’t pack so many things to start off with.

um somewhat obvious, somewhat important things:
-laptop lock! i stopped using mine second semester since my dorm was pretty small and safe and everyone knew everyone, but i think it’d be smart to get one.
-umm sponge and detergent. for whatever reason, i forgot the latter and just mooched off my roommate for most of the year. but then i felt bad.
-eye mask/ear plugs. i didn’t need them since i went to sleep consistently after my roommate, but she always used them so that she wasn’t disturbed by my desk lamp.
-fan–when you get your housing assignment, check if your dorm will have ac. but also generally, they don’t turn on the ac until after school is over in may, so if it gets hot before then, in the spring, it’d be nice to have a fan.
-floor lamp – not really essential. but the large florescent lamp was kind of tawdryy. and the floor lamp provided more light and just gave the room a warmer feel to it.
-rugs are stupid. i had one and kept tripping over it. and i also had carpet. so i don’t even know why I had one. but if you have tiled floors, a rug would be a good idea.
-clothes are pretty important. and galoshes! if you’re a girl. i loved my galoshes, especially since some parts of rutgers are very puddle-y, livingston in general, the walk from hill center to bcc on busch, the walk from dcc to dining hall in particular.
-drying rack, perhaps? i borrowed one from my floormate and it saved me some quarters for the dryer. plus the dryer kept shrinking all of my clothes so i got paranoid and started air-drying everything.
-movies! during the first couple of nights when no one had dc++ hooked up yet, we’d rely on each other’s movies. it’s a good you know, bonding thing to have with your roommates, movie nights, I mean. that was a convoluted sentence. i’m tired and should go to sleep.
-hmm can’t really think of anything else you wouldn’t think of.

just remember not to bring so much stuff! it was a pain moving in and out with all the crap i had. i also brought a whole bookshelf worth of books and maybe touched like two? three? you won’t have too much free time for pleasure-reading.

and housing made our beds higher before we even got there. some people just called up housing to take them out. i had underbed drawers that came with the dorm furniture. bed-risers allow for about a foot of room between the drawers and the bed. also, since the bed was higher (i’m about 5’4, so pretty short), it was harder for me to get on, as pathetic as that sounds. and i guess it was pretty helpful having some extra space under my bed. i just put stuff there that i would normally leave on the floor, but stuck under there to make the floor less cluttered. but i would assume that target, walmart, bed bath and beyond would carry them (i just googled bed risers, and that is confirmed).

no summer work unless you are in the honors program and have a summer reading blog to follow. the book this summer for honors kids is last town on earth.

hope this was a bit helpful.

edit: (we could do this in my dorm, but i’m not 100% positive you can do this in others) if you want even more space, you can ask housing to loft your beds. it’s like a bunk bed, without the bottom bunk. and you can just put your desk underneath your bed. you get a lot more space to, i don’t know, dance around? my floormates had lofted beds and didn’t really do anything with the extra space. it was just kind of…empty. and they were worried about rolling off their beds in the middle of the night. so i don’t know. just something to consider if you want to maximize your space.

I have a question about final transcripts, how long does it usually take RU to process them? My hs told me that they sent mine July 1st but I didn’t see any change on the RU pathway site and the final transcripts are due tomorrow. IDK if this makes a difference but i’m going to RU in Newark.

wow naoise thanks so much! very informative. and also johokat, i hope there are some theater/nerdy/smart/cute girls at ru because i am one and need friends that won’t annoy the hell out of me lol

xGlam: I don’t remember how long it took last year to process, but i remember it taking longer than I expected. so maybe like two-three weeks? If your transcript is late, don’t lose any sleep over it. i’m pretty sure mine was pretty late, too. also, i’ve come to realize that most of the deadlines for rutgers-related things are pretty flexible, except you know, financial aid things. you should get those in on time.

How late in July do housing assignments get posted for incoming students? The housing website said they will be posted in July.

like the last week of july. but last year, i got my housing assignment in early august, for whatever reason.

Make sure you send in your immunization forms!

They state by the end of July, but I believe the reason why we got our assignments late last year was because of that unexpected housing shortage =(

You should receive assignments no later than the first week of August, though.

For immunizations, is it really really super bad if they’re late?

Cause I told my doctor about a weird lymph node that wouldn’t go away. That become a blood test that turned out normal and he still wants me to see another doctor about it. D: I can’t get any vaccines until this is cleared.

Sorry about your condition =(

You won’t get housing assignments until you send in your form and in addition won’t be allowed to receive your key and access to your dorm room.

I would probably contact Rutgers about this.

Has housing information been released yet for freshmen? if not, approximately when will we know?

…nevermind about the previous post. =]

It’s alright. It’s not even like a big deal, but my immunization forms should be in within a week of the deadline…

That stuff sounds pretty serious, though! D: I’ll see what I can do.

Thanks naoise! I just checked the application status page today and they’ve received my final transcript.
