Anyone have questions about Rutgers? I feel like helping.

I’ve heard that there are no more orientation spots open… And I haven’t even had a decision yet

I just read about this today:

At this time, sessions for the Rutgers University Summer Orientation Program have reached maximum capacity. We are currently trying to expand some sessions. Students who are not able to attend during the summer will be able to register for a modified Orientation Program that will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2009. We will have updates in the coming weeks.

I would keep checking for the updates. And good luck to you!

Have any of you taken calc? I’m planning on majoring in bio (and hopefully doing the PA program) and I’ve only taken pre-calculus in high school but placed into calc. Is it crazy hard or manageable?

To naoise regarding your post to me of 6/4 having to do with DRC orientation,

I just wanted you to know that my daughter finished orientation this week and had a very good time. She’s sort of shy and introverted, at least until she knows people, but she had no problem making new friends. She feels good about Douglass and her decision to live there, and we her parents feel good about Douglass. She met only one other dancer and about five other Mason Gross kids, but she knows it is a good thing to have friends and a social life outside of the dancers and others she will meet at MGSA. She’s even talking about going to football games, which is definitely not like my daughter. Thank you for your advice and thoughts.

Okay, I have another question! On my schedule I have a class called ‘Study Sklls Math Dev’ and I was wonder what it was. I’m pretty sure rutgers put it there because it doesn’t let me remove it and it also says ‘Hrs by Arr’.

Do you have any clue what this is?? If it makes any difference i’m attending the newark campus.

tucker92: that’s great about your daughter! and yes, choosing drc was an excellent decision. i feel like drc really tries to help its students and gives us all kinds of opportunities to develop ourselves professionally, academically, and socially.

xGlam: I’m not quite sure what that may be. and a google search is providing very minimal insight. but it sounds similar to the writing tutoring that rutgers nb provides through its writing centers in which the hours are also arranged by appointment. perhaps it’s something through the learning/tutoring centers that assists you with math? do your math skills need any improvement, if you don’t mind my asking?

I am not the type of person who believes “this college has to be perfect” because I am pretty easy going and can have a good time anywhere.

So after reading my older brother’s college selection material (he apparently wanted the perfect college), the book said Rutgers would feel much better if “people didnt go home on the weekends.”

Any rough estimates on how many people go home on the weekends? I live in NJ and wouldn’t go home until at least junior or senior year (I would have my car up there) for VERY special occasions.

And one more thing, whats your favorite pizza place on campus?

last semester, i only went home during spring break and when the semester was over. but about half my dorm went home on the weekends, can’t say a lot about the rest of campus, but it’s probably around there. there are also tons of people who stay though. and to be completely completely honest, i’d rather hang out with those people anyway, you know? instead of hanging out with the people who want to go home every weekend (and i know that some people have to go home on the weekends, and suchhh. no offensee or anything). so initially, it was kind of a bummer, but then it turned more into like a weeder-outter, if you know what i mean (again, no offense intended to kids who go home).

i don’t really eat pizza, but stuff yer face on easton has some good stromboli. they serve pizza, but i have yet to try it.

I guess it depends on your dorm and the people who live there. For some reason, I hated staying over at Rutgers on weekends after football season was over because I had nothing to do and sometimes I lacked sleep because of

(a) my bed was becoming more uncomfortable, and

(b)people made all sorts of noises (screaming, running up and down the stairwell (where I was inconveniently near), arguing and fighting with their drunk boyfriend/girlfriend, blasting music on a stereo until after 12, drunk girls singing loudly and badly while stumbling into the dorm entrance, someone strumming a guitar up and down the hall like a minstrel, ambulance engine running at 2am in front of the dorm (and those damn lights)). ::sighs:: I needed sleep and the only place I could get it was at home, strangely.

Then the bus system on weekends kind of sucked so sometimes it wasn’t worth it for me to wait 20-30 minutes for the weekend bus from Busch to College Avenue just to go downtown or around the campus and look for things to do, especially during the winter.

It wasn’t until I befriended one or two girls on my floor (I was kind of a hermit, so I usually avoid contact with others often) that I did not mind staying over on weekends. We would watch movies in our dorms together or take the train and go out to eat and walk around.

In terms of pizza – I haven’t eaten in any of the local pizzerias off campus in the area, but there are pizza places at the student centers – Gerlanda’s pizza on College Ave and Busch AND Sbarro’s on Livingston. Sbarro’s is good. Gerlanda’s is too (the dough is wheat), but not the best I’ve tasted. Overall, it’s okay pizza.

I know this is really really really bad. And I’m very foolish. But I have yet to send in my housing deposit. Am I screwed and I haven’t gotten my medical immunizations too? =,[ And I wanted to ask whats the best order of campus anyway even tho Ill probably be tossed into the streets.

We have to send in a housing deposit? Is that separate or would it be included with the payment plan? We already made the first payment for tuition and what we thought would cover housing and “campus expenses.” Now we see that the immunization form is problematic - we sent in the school’s copy filled in by us and an attachment that the doctor’s office always provides with the dates of the shots, etc, and the doctor’s signature, and apparently there is a problem with it. I’m nervous we’re not aware of stuff that we have to do to make sure all is in place. Additionally, if we’re accepting the non-subsidized Stafford loan, do we have to actively apply for it? It’s confusing because they say we have to decline if we DON’T want it. Is there someplace on the R website that has a comprehensive step by step of everything one needs to do, as it seems that there is often outdated info online or different info depending upon what site you stumble upon.

Sorry but I have one more question to add. I enrolled into School of Arts and Science but I’d like to switch out to the School of Engineering cause I saw some 5 year thing to major in engineering and physics and I’m not so sure now so I rather be in the School of Engineering to be safer. I’m an incoming first year freshman and I was wondering if this is possible to do now. Like to call in to switch me out instead of having to waste my first semester in SAS. Plus am Im screwed for housing, best to worst housing, and immunizations?

CTran726: I believe you can transfer, but most likely you will have to wait until Spring 2010 to be under the School of Engineering.

You’ll have to wait until October 1, 2009 for the application since the deadline for Fall has passed, so you would have to stay one semester in SAS, but you won’t be wasting a semester since you are required to take classes like calculus, physics, and chemistry before switching into the school. Check the links below. The second list provides the criteria for admission into the Engineering school via school-to- school transfer:

[Rutgers Undergraduate Admissions - School-to-School Transfer](http://admissions.rutgers.edu/SchoolToSchool/req.aspx)
[SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING](http://admissions.rutgers.edu/SchoolToSchool/requirementdocs\engreq.htm)

How screwed are you with housing? As long as you put a deposit and put down your preferences of housing via the housing/dining agreement, you’ll get housing. You just won’t be able to get your housing assignment, your dorm key and move in until you submit your medical form. Best to worst housing is subjective.

It doesn’t matter where you dorm since you have the buses to take you to where you want to go. People generally have dislike for Livingston because it’s isolated and not as active as the other campuses, while College Avenue seems to be a favorite because of the social life. Busch is also a favorite, especially amongst those majoring in the sciences. Which campus did you put as your first choice?

(Sorry for the double post)

Moxy: I think you were required to put a $100 deposit for housing by June 15th. Check the enrollment pathway page to see if you have done so. I don’t think you have been able to choose your preferences for housing nor fill out the dining form without submitting your payment. If not, contact Rutgers to confirm if you did or did not.

If you don’t mind me asking, what’s the problem with the immunization form? Did you check to see if all the required shots were received or at least recorded as being received? Contact Rutgers and ask them about it. I was pretty sure that you were allowed to attach a copy from the doctor. If not, perhaps it would be best to see if the doctor can personally fill out the form that Rutgers provided just to avoid being screwed over from Rutgers again =P

With the loan, via the Financial Aid Status Page, scroll to the bottom and look ‘What to do next’. Look for “To reduce or decline all or part of your awards, submit the DCF” link. Next, look for “OPTIONAL: Change Loan or Federal Work-Study Awards” and change the subsidized amount to 0 if you don’t want that specific loan and press “confirm”

For the unsubsidized, you need to go on a website to accept it. Go to http://dlenote.ed.gov to sign the promissory note.

Here’s a guide from Rutgers that tells you what to do (and it probably explains better than I did, haha):
http://studentaid.rutgers.edu/forms/AwdLetterGuide09.pdf

Do you believe I could attempt to try to call to switch out and if so who should I call? And…=/ the thing is I haven’t yet. One bad thing bout me is I procastinate alot. And I’m worried cause my friends are just saying your screwed gonna get the worst campus or off campus housing or something. And I was gonna put like Busch, College/Livingston or viceversa, then cook, then Douglass. My one friend said Livingston was good but Im not so sure now and that Douglass is filled mostly with woman not that it’s bad thing but eh. All I know is Busch is best but it seems very unlikely I’ll make it.

Yikes! You better submit that housing form RIGHT NOW!

As a first year, you are guarantee housing. You won’t be put into a hotel or forced to get on campus housing like us upperclassman ;)

Go fill out that form now, seriously =D

Put down the order that you stated above (Busch, College Avenue, Livingston). There will always be at least ONE person who decide to cancel their housing agreement because a change in plans or a decision to transfer. And remember, wherever you are put, don’t feel bad about it. Douglass is a nice campus though. Yes, majority women, but there is a dorm for freshmen co-eds now. I personally would choose that campus over Livingston (no offense-- I mean, Livingston is a good campus, but it feels a bit isolated at times).

And for the engineering school, I don’t know. You can try and contact someone (I think the dean for the school is listed on the second link that I provided above). But, just stay in SAS for one semester and do the required chemistry, physics, and calculus classes.

You WON’T be behind and won’t be wasting a semester at SAS since you NEED those classes for Engineering anyway. Then fill out the form this October, then you’ll be able to switch in come January for second semester.

I can’t thank you enough for the help, info, and positive words. You’ve at least eased my mind. Ha maybe I’ll see ya around lol.

Hi MushaboomBlue - thanks for the links. The medical form was signed by the doctor, and son has had all mandatory immunizations. Maybe something is unclear to them. We even completed the R form and filled in the dates, and then said “see attached” referring them to the doctor’s own immunization form. Being US born, we interpreted the requirements as not needing TB test info, but only necessary for immigrants from certain locations. We had all the fields for “required” for US born citizen completed, so don’t understand their standardized comment about MMR, Meninigitis or TB not met or info missing. Son will call R tomorrow. For housing, the status says “already submitted housing agreement”, so I guess we must have sent the deposit if it was requested at the time son did the agreement. Does R not assign housing until immunization form cleared, or just not release it to us? Thanks

CTran726: Glad I could help! =) And good luck on housing and your first semester at Rutgers =)

Moxy: Most likely you have submitted the deposit! Now, with the form, yes I would contact Rutgers just in case. Maybe it’s carelessness on their part (heck, I just found out that the reason why I never got loans last year and almost this year was because they did not have my S.S. # on file and they didn’t even have the nerve to contact me about it!)

Rutgers won’t release the housing assignment (or allow you to dorm or retrieve your key) until immunization is cleared. I didn’t even submit my immunization form until the very end of July and I still got my first choice housing. So it’s clear that they will have a dorm for your son, but just won’t tell ya!

I got a 5 on the AP U.S. history exam.
What class am I exempt from? o_o
I hope my question makes sense… >.<
