Hey guys, I was just wondering, does anyone here know how much Syracuse gives in Financial Aid... I know it differs based on the person's need, but how well is Syracuse known for giving aid? Are they the type of school that's extremely frugal about giving money out, or are they the type of school who tries to give as much money as the student needs? Please help, I really need some idea/advice.

We weren't optimistic, and for good reason. It was the second worst package my D got (they gapped us $8,000.00). However, I do know some kids who got some merit aid--depends on your kid! It seems like the ones who get the worst packages are the ones who need some FA but can afford to pay some out of pocket.

so chances are, unless a student is in dire need of financial aid, then they wont give out a lot of money?

It's doubtful. They're not known for being generous. And a shame, too. My D would have gone to Syracuse if they had come even remotely close to our EFC.

how much was your EFC? if u dont mind sharing? Were you in great need of aid?

and by saying they "gapped" you 8000 dollars, does that mean you received 8000 dollars only from them? lol Sorry~

Gap=difference between EFC and net cost to attend. I DO feel uncomfortable sharing my EFC (and we are in need of aid), so I'll use an example:

Total cost to attend 45,000
Total of Financial Aid 20,000
Net cost to attend 25,000
EFC 10,000
Gap 15,000

My daughter had a very strong portfolio, which made as encouraged for merit aid. However, she got NOTHING. I even called Syracuse and see if they would at least match the merit awards that were offered by comparable schools such as RIT , University of Cincinnati etc. They wouldn't even consider negotiating any aid for us...

Taxguy...my DD visited syracuse and then did an interview in NYC. All went well. Her stats were in the ballpark for merit aid or so I thought...was counting on it. We didn't apply for need fin aid and when after the acceptance letter we never got any notice of merit aid I called. There was no merit money for her they couldn't give it all to the newhouse kids, and that was final. DD friend with the same stats got merit money.
DD discarded syracuse due to the lack of money which suddenly made the climate less appealing.I view it as Syracuses loss. I wasn't too thrilled with the area/safety factor
she has offers of merit money from 3 school ( 2 were expected) but will probably go to her dream school of BC with no merit money

I guess we're all voting with our feet...
