Well like many you I came in to a CC all pumped up I always focused on getting full time every semester but It just hit me that I CANT KEEP UP. I am thinking of dropping a class
(4 W's) in total if I do. This means I have to stay another year... going for 3 already. Anyways I am just wondering if any of you have any stories of staying long in a CC and transferring to a good university. I need someone to shed some light on me.

Lindros,

You need to talk with the transfer counselor at your community college about your options after you finish your degree there, and you also need to talk with the student services/disability services office about just exactly what it is that gets you off track each semester. You may need to make a concentrated effort to develop specific study habits and/or organizational skills before you transfer to a 4-year school.

@Lindros: I’m finishing up my third year at a CC; however, my reasons aren’t like yours. I couldn’t afford to go FT because I couldn’t afford to and I didn’t want to take out student loans. Anyway, I agree with happymomof1’s advice if you want to transfer to a 4-year; figure out what the issues are. In my case, I’m in the process of transferring to a 4-year. I’ve been accepted to my state university as well as an Ivy. So to answer your question of “staying long in a CC and transferring to a good university”: it is very possible.

I also agree with happymomof1 - if you can’t keep up with a full time semester of lower division/general ed at a community college, then there’s no way you’ll be able to keep up with harder upper division courses after you transfer to a good university. I definitely recommend working on your study habits, time management, and methods of retaining information before transferring. How many units/classes were you taking? Full time for me was 12 units/4 classes, sometimes 15 units/5 classes if one or two of them were easy. I think you should be able to handle 4 classes/semester depending on your major. If you’re concerned about sticking around at a CC for an extra year because you can’t handle full time classes, then I hope you realize you’ll most likely have to be at a university for longer than 2 years as well, because it sounds like you can’t handle the work load.

I spent 3 years at my CC and just got my AA (I couldn’t take summer classes, plus my first year I didn’t take very many classes, so that’s why it took an extra year). By the end I had 2 W’s and a 3.98 GPA. I can’t afford to go to really good schools (had to apply to CSU’s only) but I know I could’ve easily gotten accepted to most UC’s. I have a friend who is majoring in Engineering, and is taking her time because it’s so much work and so many intense classes. She’ll probably end up doing 4-5 years at a CC before her plans to transfer to UC Berkeley. So, yes, you can definitely stick around at a CC and still go to a good uni. Don’t feel rushed to transfer if you’re not prepared.
