Are we still gonna get into any classes?
I checked the blackboard Course Catalogue and well (i didnt know what i was looking at) only saw a few classes...

Um you can check your classes like right now:

[FSU University Registrar](http://www.registrar.fsu.edu)

Look for course registration and start searching for classes

just pm me for questions!

Ok…been a while. No Idea how to get my classes. Ive been looking around and everyone seems to already have there classes…
Like I already said. My orientation is still weeks away. I feel like im not gonna get the classes I need…
I’m a freshman if that makes any difference

With any major, there are still lots of Gen Ed requirements to get out of the way. Are you coming in with credits for AP/IB/DE? If not, there will be LOTS of things to take to meet your gen ed requirements.

Have you selected a major? What type electives interest you? We can help you come up with some options.

Ive got European History Credit (EUH1009) and German credit(Ger2220+2221, got a 5 there). I really wanted to do Chemical or Bio Engineering but I looked at their schedule and uhh…I dont see most of the gen ed requirments on it. Its so filled up with other stuff…
http://www.eng.fsu.edu/departments/chemical/documents/FSU_CHEMICAL_currguide.doc

Will I even have time for electives?
I sent in an volunteer application for the filmschool for acting and set work, but I cant see myself majoring in anything with entertainment…to risky. Its just a hobby of mine.

I really want to also keep my GPA high to possibly go into MedSchool but just looking at this schedule maked me feel like Ill be lucky if I survive those 4 years.

They just opened up new sections of CHem 1045 class and lab. You would need that for Chem/Biochem/premed. You can take ENC 1101(English)–there will be lots of sections. There are usually openings in Mac 1105/1114/1120 (Algebra/Trig/Precalc) as you will need Math and depending on SAT scores you would start with one of these. Look to take an x or y class that is required for graduation. Or get a Humanities.

With openings…you mean they are already filled?
I took Calc in HS but didnt get AP credit should I still start with one of those you listed?
How can I get into these courses before orientation? I feel like I got screwed over with this late date. Everyone else already got there courses and Im getting the left overs now?

Yes, most freshman attended orientation in May or June. The window to register was open for the days of orientation only. Then, everyone’s window to register for classes opened up for the month of July, and now registration is closed again unless you have an orientation in August. Then add/drop opens up again a few days before fall term.

FSU will award credit for ENC1101 to any student with an SAT Verbal sub-score of 650 or higher or an ACT English sub-score of 29 or higher. If you don’t have this you have to take ENC 1101 your first semester on campus. So look for sections with open seats on the Course Lookup at registrar.fsu.edu.

Credit for MAC1105 is awarded for SAT Quantitative sub-scores of 680 or higher or an ACT Math sub-score of 30 or higher. This credit should be posted prior to your arrival at Orientaton. Although college credit is not awarded, FSU will allow students to skip MAC1105 if they have an SAT Quantitative sub-score of 600 or higher or an ACT Math sub-score of 26 or higher. So this tells you if you should start with MAC1105 or if you can skip ahead to MAC 1114 (trig) or MAC 1140 (precalc). Even if you took Calc in HS, if you don’t have AP/IB credit for it you have to have start with 1105, or test out and start with 1114 or1140 (these two can be taken in ANY ORDER.)

There are 34 sections of MAC1105 with open seats, and over 300 seats open total. That is alot. There are 8 sections of MAC1114 still open with over 100 seats open, and 5 sections of MAC 1140 open with over 50 seats.

There are 34 sections of ENC 1101 with over 200 seats open.

I think you will be fine. Take ENC 1101 and your first Math sequence for starters. Most freshman take 12 hours fall instead of 15 to go a bit easy the first semester. So if you do this you only need two more classes. Look for other classes that are required: [FSU General Bulletin](http://registrar.fsu.edu/bulletin/undergrad/info/undergrad_degree.htm#). Scroll down to
general requirements, as also the Multicultural Requirments. This will help you select courses you will need to graduate. You can get some of these out of the way. Look for X or Y classes that interest you and then check Course Lookup [Course Lookup Search Form](http://apps.oti.fsu.edu/RegistrarCourseLookup/SearchResults) for classes with open spots. Or pick a science class you want to start with and look for open spots.

Wow thanks ok. Ill do that.
So what about that Chem Schedule I posted? How would that actually be possible? Do they already expect you to get AP and SAT credit to start with calc and the other science courses rather than working yourself up from Algebra and other gen ed courses?

Do they also expect the students that have the august orientation to do the registering themselves or do they some split the course slots fairly between the orientations?

oops I missed that. Yes, it is a tough major and they expect that you come with with Math Credit. But with an extra summer thrown in, it can be done. I am curious why you did not attend orientation in May or June? They hold sections until each orientation happens, but by August they are not holding sections…

So based on the guide you posted, you still need ENC 1101. And start with the math you need, or take the Math placement exam at Orientation and see if you can test out of some math. Or take the CLEP exam ASAP. They go over all of this in MAY or JUNE so you have the summer to try to get credits you don’t have. You need the Chem 1045 I mentioned, but even after they opened new sections 2 weeks ago, I am not certain there are spaces left. BUT THERE ARE ALWAYS STUDENTS WHO DROP at drop/add.

I have to admit that you should have asked this sooner, or gone to orientation when they suggested. And I think EVERYONE has open registration for the month of July, so had you asked earlier, you could have gone in and snagged a schedule. But now, the computer will not let you register until your orientation as the open window has passed.

If you look at the curriculum guide that you posted, it has Humanities, and X and Y classes scattered through out. BUT, you picked a major that to meet the major requirements AND the univeristy requirements, it takes NOT the usual 120 credit hours, but 131 credit hours, with NO FLEXIBILITY. Most folks who attempt this major either come in with more math credit, or come in with more gen ed requirement credit, or start their freshman year in the summer, or take 5 years to graduate.

I think you may have to focus the first semester on just getting gen ed requirements done. Then start the curriculum guide in the Spring. Then plan on taking summers. If you are motivated, it can be done. It is just tricky trying to do this major and register in August.

I was on vacation until late july. And this was the only date available for me.
…could I major in biomed engineering? or will the schedule be pretty much the same? Is
this the same at every school as well? I want to go into medschool. I didnt think majoring in a field associated with med school would be this big a problem by itself…
What else could I do?
If the orientation im going to is just to fill up the rest of the classes I feel like that alone will set me back at least a semester…

btw. why wont it let me register anymore?

I just looked up chm 1045. They only have labs. 1st off I dont get why they have more labs than actual chem courses. Well theres no 2nd…thats it.
Do you think theyll open more in these next few weeks before school starts?

They have more labs than classes because they generally add the same number of each, but some kids pass lab and fail chem, and only have to retake the chem, so they sign up for class and not lab. Chem 1045 is tough, and a “weed” class, it weeds out a fair number of students who realize they can’t cut it. Look at the total numbers enrolled in 1045, then 1046. Then compare that to those who finally make it to enroll in Orgnanic. Quite a drop off.

The windows to register are outlined in the section at registrar.fsu.edu called registration windows. Seniors register first, then juniors etc and they open your window accordingly. Then they close registration, opening it again in the summer. It is closed now so that they can see exactly where there are classes open, and where there are needs. It is common knowledge that the later you register, the less choice you have in classes, esp as a freshman, and esp with budget cutbacks. Without orientation in May or June, and with reading the board here, you could have picked up on that, and also learned that the registration window was open for eveyone in July.

And it is also generally common knowledge that any ENGINEERING MAJOR is demanding, and many who have an engineering major graduate in 5 years. Not just at FSU. And Engineering is so tough, that few premeds major in it, because it is well known that a good graduating GPA in engineering is a 3.0. And that is also not just at FSU. So premeds tend to steer away from engineering because of that. When you get to orientation, talk to your academic adviser. You should even email ahead with questions about majoring in chemical or biomedical engineering as a premed, and whether you can graduate in 4 years with needing MAC1105 as your starting place in Math. It was just unfortunate that you had to wait to register in August, and you did not call or email. In the info you got after you were accepted there were alot of references to this page:[Academic Program Guide, Majors and Academic Maps | fsu.edu](http://www.academic-guide.fsu.edu/). If you click on the guide for chem/biomed engineering it is here:[FSU Undergraduate Academic Program Guide](http://www.academic-guide.fsu.edu/engineering_biomedical.html). And it says
and
This is a challenging major with 16-18 hours per semester and summers even for someone who can start with Calculus I. I think it is a great major. But I don’t think it can be done in 4 years starting with College Algebra and not registering until August (ie no math placement testing and no CLEP testing.) And I think it may be too ambitious for a pre-med major, unless you can dedicate 5 years to both completing the work, and having time to keep a GPA above 3.5.
