Anyone here worries about having to start college in an older age?

Doing all 3 sciences? shudders I hate physics.

IB ok. Though hating extended essay. And Spanish.

not all sciences

phy and chem only

eng lang is not a science
env management.. it's too easy to be called a science lol

Ahhh. At my old "college" we didn't have English. We had "General Paper". Absolutely no mixing of the scienes (math, bio, chem, phsyics, further math) and the arts (econ, accounting, history, hmm...what else, eh?). It was sooo segregated.

And they wonder why most A Level students got bad scores for TOEFL or IELTS!

stats be good. if you have equaly good ec's and recos, i think ull get into other good schools that give more need based aid..just do sm more research.

Thanks, himalayandreams. I got my EC's also floatin' around but don't want to monopolize this thread. :)

Anybody worries whether uni/college freshmen would be like h.s.s seniors and be all clique-ish and ostracize us BECAUSE of our age?

oh well, nothing we can do. screw them, if they do.

i'm worried abt getting to college in the first place!

and monopolise away! not like many ppl using the thread.

True....it's getting in that's the issue...

I wonder, though, if our "maturity" would b considered a hook...

LOL I'll tell ya why we're a "hook", we will be allowed to buy alcohol soon in our college career, unlike most freshmen... and sophmors... and juniors... damn! Still can't believe I graduated 17 and will be the oldest one in my class! We will have to find each other over there and join forces against those immature creatures! Us, internationals have to stick together! :)

And I donno where you guys are from, but from what I've seen, every 18 yrs old from ANYWHERE in the world is more mature than the typical American high school senior/college frosh.

Eh, good luck to us :)

And himalayandreams you WILL get to college! ANGRY

GAH! Cannot find Server!

Isn't that GREAT generalization, Cotton_Candy?? Do you mean typical American high school senior as in American nationals in the US or American nationals in other countries or int'ls in the US? It might also depend on how "Luxurious/lazy" your lifestyle is. There are such different levels of "spoiledness" in each country.

Yeah...we'll be able to buy alcohol (even if we don't drink it) as freshmen or sophomores or juniors. Though OF COURSE we won't give them to underage kids, RIGHT? :p

himalayandreams: shakes you Don't be negative!!!

I'm just generalizing for the fun of it! I want to belive they are all spoiled and immature, because I know it can never be the case! America is just too big and my top schools are also quite large so I can't really conclude. The thing is, going with that attitude, I can only be surprised if I find out that's not the case. And if it is, well, I'm prepared for it :) But hey, ofcourse I'm optimistic, otherwise would I be applying to scools in th states? I think sun-conciousley I know I'll do fine. Nothing to lose.
And yeah, alcohol is such a big deal for them. Where I'm from, we can drink at 18, so no one makes a big deal out of it. We don't drink for the sake of drinking, but we do have a few drinks when going out to parties and bars, and if some of us end up drunk, so be it. In that aspect, I believe only Americans have that drinking colture, when they have drinking events, games and whatever!
We're in for a treat :)

Where are you living, Cotton_Candy?

I sometimes tend to think that Montreal had the right idea of making the drinking age 18 years old. Gives them a while to deal with "the heady freedom of drinking" then they'll be moderate. Better, I think, to overdrink when you're STARTING uni than near the end, when you're about to graduate and maybe start your Masters or get a job.

In Romania, i don't know what the legal drinkin' age is. But even 14 years old drink sometimes or can sneak into clubs (or go to keg parties). They really don't ask for ID when you buy alcohol (like Bailey's or Bacardi's) at supermarkets, even if you look 16.

I do wonder, how much of alcohol consumption is correlated to the weather...as in, during harsh winters...

hell, my country doesn't have a drinking age! go NEPAL!!

a blessing or a curse in disguise..well, who cares. and yea, by lowering the age kimit to drink, i guess, in a way, youngsters do become more responsible...not beforea few very very embarassing episodes ofcourse like me!

and thanks for the well wishes, hope we all get in!

I'm from Israel. And here also it was never too hard to buy alcohol or get into clubs. When going to clubs sreving alcohol, I was never requested to show an ID, was maybe asked what my age was at some cases, but nothing to strict.

And I definitely think 21 is too old in a way... that's like "teasing" people when they feel so mature and responsible, telling them they are actually not. That's even more enticing. For me, I do drink when going out in groups, to a bar or a club, but not in an attempt to get drunk or totally lose control. And I most definitely can have fun without drinking.

I'm now 22, starting as a freshman.
I don't find anything inconvenient. There are other two international freshmen from Singpore who are 21.
It's so common in my home country. Last year, there were 20 and 21 olds, 10 year ago, there was a 22, and so on.

May I ask what school you are attending?

Dartmouth College

sweet.

+chars

Well if youre above a "certain"-cough cough- age...you are sure to become very popular among your class-for your ability to buy beer for everyone

True, but if you get caught for aiding in underage drinking and they're uber-drunk... I think they're harsher on intels than locals... But maybe that's just me and stupid stereotypes.

But besides the whole "advantage" of being popular for being able to buy beer for everybody, what else is there? Would adcoms seriously be impressed by the fact that hopefully in the 1,2,3,etc years you're older than most freshmen, you've mature a whole bunch and help them "build a well-rounded freshmen class"?
