Anyone in Hudson and Holland Scholars Program?

I just finished my SSA, and was notified of my admission to the Hudson and Holland program. Wondering if anyone had participated in this and knew anything about it? And if anyone else was admitted! I’m worried because it seems to concentrate on underrepresented minorities, which I am not sure I am.

I’ve heard a fair bit about it (a friend’s nieces are in it) and think you’re really fortunate. You’ll have additional resources available to help you navigate IU and make the most of your experience there, and it’ll be a great way to meet a group of talented and interesting students. If you happened to read “Paying for the Party”, it’s the program that’s referred to as the “creaming” one. Underrepresented is pretty broad-- it can include be something like you’re coming from somewhere where there aren’t many IU folks (who could be giving you their tips), you’re one of the first in in your family to go to college or not commute to college, as well as being one of the more obvious minorities (racial, religious, etc.) To be in the program, you have to be academically promising. so congratulations.

What is meant by the “creaming one”?

In the book, they refer to a program that takes the best students (i.e., skims the cream off the top) which it refers to as a “creaming” program. The book states that these students are provided with additional resources and supports which lead to better outcomes. In other words, their outcomes should not be compared to those of the general population being studied without acknowledging the role of the program. (This is a non-fiction book that follows a group of girls from a “party dorm” through 5 years. I could try to describe the book, but you’d probably get a better synopsis from Amazon!)

My D applied for this, but her second reference letter didn’t come in until Jan 14 or so. I’m assuming that any decision was held up because of that - is that the case?

Don’t know, @choirsandstages . Can you contact them directly?

Well I think I’ll probably hold off on being too impatient since they just rec’d the last reference…we will wait it out a bit.

How long did it take you to hear back after completing the SSA? My recommenders sent in their letters a few days before the 15th.

My D just heard back today - she’s in! Unfortunately we can’t celebrate quite yet unless and until she gets accepted into her chosen major…

I got in today!!

Congrats @IUbound16 !! It’s a pretty great program and will ease the financial burden.

Thank you @choirsandstages and congrats to your daughter as well! I also received the Fry Scholarship for Kelley which supplements all aid for the full COA so I have a full ride which definitely made choosing IU much easier especially because I’ll have so much academic support

@IUbound16 that is so incredibly amazing–how great for you! I love to see a story of someone beating the odds, especially after reading the downer thread “just cuz you got accepted doesn’t mean $$ are forthcoming.” Congrats again!
