Hudson & Holland Scholars Program

I just got this selective scholarship application in the mail. im excited to be recruited for a scholarship, but i find it weird that there is NO indication about how much it might be for, epically with all the extra stuff they're asking me to do.
-2 additional letters of recommendation
-3 essays (two 200-400 words, one 600 words)
-additional list of activities and awards

anyone else get this yet? did they apply? im going to start working on it tonight...

here's the scholarships website btw:

You didn't search the website thoroughly. A few clicks, and I found your answer.

Its pretty awesome, I thought I did terrible on the ACT but apparently not. I got a 31. So that means I just received invitation into the Hutton Honors college. Hopefully I will get something regarding the Excellence scholarship shortly because it was under my comprehension that if I sent in better scores by the 1st of February I would be boosted up.

Anyways, because I have been invited late do you think it is worth the effort to fill out the information or just email them to say that I am interested? I have heard that they give away most scholarships early. $5000 in base scholarships though is extremely appealing considering I'm OOS. So based on these stats what chances would you say I could get money, assuming that I write average essays.

Small rural public high school, maybe 400 students.
Class Rank: 1/86 (4.000)
ACT: 31
AP Classes: Government (3) English (currently taking)
Since class is small not much is offered in honors or advanced classes although I am basically taking the hardest course load possible for the small amount of classes available.
NHS: I have no actual leadership position but could argue leadership qualities with some things I have done in NHS.
Cross Country, Track, Academic Team (captain)
I could also throw in commissioner of a Fantasy Football team, or organizing video game tournaments but I doubt they would take those things into consideration.

Keep in mind, I am also pretty lazy, and there are three essays. I didn't apply to Michigan because of the essay :D

I also got the SSA and applied, and i only got a 29 on the ACT (i was kind of surprised they even sent it to me) but there are all sorts of awards you could get, theres also a special Hutton Honors College scholarship. Really by filling out the SSA you could get anything from 1,000 to full tuition from what i've gathered. hope that helps!

It depends on what school you applied for. I got the SSA, and in addition to being considered for Hutton Honors College Scholarships, I'm also being considered for the Kelley Scholars program because I was directly admitted to Kelley. The Hudson and Holland Scholars Program is probably something related to your major.

Yeah, I'm Kelley, DA. I looked online and the only thing I saw were scholarships you automatically applied for. On the top of my SSA sheet it only said I was eligible for Hutton.

Twigman, is the $5000 and essays you mention in your post for Hutton or Hudson Holland?

You could probably get into Hutton without doing the essays, by calling them and talking about it. Your chances of getting Hutton money are pretty slim, but it is worth getting in for all the advantages it gives you in being able to select honor courses when they are good for your schedule.

With Hudson Holland, though, you probably very much need to do the essays, as they will want to see a commitment from you. HHSP has lots of activities and advising/monitoring sessions that you will need to attend each semester (including a mandatory three-credit hour class with a big portfolio project your first semester at IU), so if you do not do the essays, they might take it as a sign that you don't want to do the other stuff either-- most of which is more demanding than writing the essays.

Keep in mind, too, that HHSP requires only a 3.0 gpa to maintain your base money of $5,000 annually (if you don't do all your obligations, though, they take some of the money away.). Hutton requires a much higher gpa, 3.4, to retain the scholarships, and Hutton scholarships are way more difficult to get, especially this late in the process, and are generally much less generous than HHSP scholarships. Everybody in HHSP gets 5,000 a year base; only a very few get that much in Hutton. Also, with HHSP, if you finish your freshman year (including your summer grades, if taken in the IU system) with a gpa of 3.7 or over, they give you an extra $2,000 for your sophomore year, and every year you stay at 3.7 or over, so it could mean an extra $6,000 over your final three years. So, I would do the HHSP essays. At minimum, you will get $5,000 your first year just for getting in and enrolling at IUB, so it is worth writing three essays and getting recommendations, etc. for that much money.

The $5000 was just in the one link that was posted above mine. The letter doesn't say anything about Holland at all. It says "scholarships considered for... Hutton Honors College" so I assume its not the $5000. Also based on what you said, most of the money is probably already gone so there is no reason for me to fill it out I should just email them letting them know I am interested. Correct?

Sorry, Twigman, i confused you with the person who started the thread.

I would contact Hutton by phone or e-mail at least a week before the ssa due date and see what they say.

To clarify--The Hudson and Holland program is intended for underrepresented populations, but others will be considered. No need to worry if you are not an underrepresented populatin and weren't offered this.
