I live in HK but HKUST was never my choice because I am not interested in sciences. I’ll apply to HKU but a good US university is my first choice. I have heard that HKUST has a lot more international students than HKU. Hong Kong is going to be a HUGE cultural shock for people who are not used to big cities. It is one of the most bustling cities ever. It;s a wonderful place though.

Try living in a place where temps reach 50-55 celsius daily and then you’ll find the answer to your question :p

Are classes at HKUST taught in English or Mandarin?

Hey Putturani! I live in Shanghai so Hong Kong shouldn’t be a shocker for me… hopefully
Hey Jai! I lived in Lucknow, India for 16 years, it wsnt cold but rather really HOT! And now i’m living in Shanghai which is freezing cold right now! so i’m actually looking forward to the weather in Kong Kong!

Oh and Rebecca I looked at the housing but couldnt decide anything :S
I contacted the University and asked them how and when do i have to apply for the housing… They told me they’ll email/mail me the info, so I should wait…

Have you looked at the Living Learning Communities? They look really interesting.

I havent heard about that!
I’ll have a look right now!!

Hey Rebecca i just checked the LLC and am thoroughly confused!! Theres an iVillage thing as well !! :S
I guess i’m going to wait for the Uni guys to send me the forms for housing and then i’ll weight out my options…

If you did understand the housing system, or got the gist of it, then PLeaSE educate me too!!

cheers!

I think the LLC is just an opportunity to get together with students of like interests do go and do cultural things together.

I haven’t done too much research as I’m not even accepted yet (fingers crossed). HKUST is where I really want to go but I don’t know if I can afford it yet. I’m just taking it one step at a time. First, get accepted.

Oh so you like dont have to opt for it!? Okie

Be positive Rebecca! I’m sure you’ll get in!
About affording it, I dont think that should be an issue cause its really really cheap as compared to the Unis in US and even Canada… Like a degree in Georgia Tech was costing me quarter of a million dollars, whereas this will only cost me MAX of 50,000 (3years) !! And they have student loans et cetera! And once you get in, which you will, then you can tell them about your situation and let them help you work out the situation :)

Good Luck!

Yeah. Hong Kong is cheaper for a degree but not on a per year basis. There are also less funding options. But if I get in, I’ll pull the money out of the air if I have to :D

haha… If you can pull tht off thn you should get in rebecca! I mean wht uni would not wanna have a student who can pull money from thin air! Their alumni list will look so out of this world with you in it!! (:

What are the requirements for admission into HK unis? Do we need to take the SAT? I’ll be graduating from an Australian system so none of the GCSE A level things from me.

Hey Ruby

Hk Universities don’t normally ask for SATs, but if you have a really good score then putting it on your application will give you a better chance of getting in, just like the NUS!
It doesnt matter what course you do, just gotta make sure you meet the minimum stipulated requirements of each University!

As has been said before, you gotta be more specific about what you wanna do and info about yourself in order for people to help you better!!

hey everyone

just sent off my final supporting docs for HKU from freeeezing Germany! Got lots of friends in HK and just love the city and the area (traveled it a lot this autumn). Also the proximity to Macau is a plus (bit of gambling problem :P) - just kiddin.

good luck to everyone!

Hey tobiz.int! Good Luck for admission to HKU!
your name sounds like Tobie, who is a friend of mine…

I just posted a new thread asking for people to critique my decision of going to HKUST:

I’ll copy Paste the info here:

"Hey guys!
I have decided to go to HKUST, as I have mentioned in my thread before, just want to make sure I’m right in choosing it over US and UK!
Please tell me what you think !!

Universities accepted to:
Georgia Tech, Illinois, U Michigan, Purdue, Rose-Hulman, Kettering, Franklin W. Olin, Imperial (UK), HKUST, University of Texas-Austin, University of California-Berkeley.

Waiting to hear from:
National University of Singapore, Rice, Cornell, Carnegie Melon.

Rejected/Deferred by:
Cooper Union

Reasons for going to HKUST:
- 3 years course instead of 4
- Asian experience and can learn Mandarin (Chinese)
- Cheap and also Full Scholarship offered to me (US around quarter of a million dollars)
- Close to home (parents live in Shanghai right now, and we are Indians, so India is close too)
- Hong Kong is a BEAUTIFUL place and the HKUST Campus is amazing!!!
- Big University (unlike Rose-Hulman, Kettering, Olin, and Cooper Union)
- Great for Mechanical Eng, was established in 1991, and is already 24 in World Rankings!!
- Economy and Job market is strongly moving towards Asia, China being the hub !!
- Can do my Post Grad from Stanford, or MIT in US and get that exposure too, plus will take the exchange program at HKUST for a term in US!

What do you guys think ?!?! Any suggestions, criticism will be of GREAT help !"

** EDIT NOTE:

UCB awaiting admission decision!!
Should be out on 25th of March hopefully! **

Well as you know, I think going to HKUST is great! But you didn’t mention where you think you’d enjoy the most. I think that’s pretty important since you’ll be there for 3 or 4 years.

Thanks for the comment Rebecca!
I’m actually really excited about going to either of the following:
HKUST, Georgia Tech, UCB…
But out of all the above if I were to pick only 1, it would be Hong Kong! The weather is incomparable to the other 2 and i’m nt even sure what US would be like!..

EVERYONE: We have started a facebook group by the name of “Future HKUST International Students”, for all those who are almost certain they will be joining HKUST this Fall 2010… Please join if you wanna make contacts before actually stepping foot into University! will make your life soo much easier and its good to know people from different programs in the same Uni !
However, if you arn’t certain that you’ll be joining HKUST, please don’t join the group yet…

:)
