Anyone play the guitar?

The only true way to learn to play guitar is to teach yourself by listening to music and trying to figure it out!

I officially endorse this statement.

Lessons/books are for posers!

Not really. If you combine books with self-learning, you do a lot better. Lessons might be "for posers' tho :D

I've been thinking of joining guitar lessons after senior year for a couple of months..will that be enough to learn the basics?

Point is, gandalf, that you can learn the basics by yourself and the internet, but you need a tutor to learn about the more advanced techniques. In the end, practising will make your proficient.

But if you feel you might not get it right yourself, by all means, go for classes (as I mentioned, I had acquired so many bad habits when trying to learn on my own).

I highly recommend lessons. If you learn how to do things the right way, it'll be easier for you.

Whoever on the first page said their finger bled when they started playing, that's crazy. My fingers would hurt a bit at first, but nothing that extreme.

I think most beginner players should try to play acoustic guitar before electric. I know a lot of people who played electric guitar first and they can't handle acoustic guitars. If you learn acoustic first, you'll be set to play whatever you want.

Yes my fingers hurt so bad for the first two weeks that at one point I decided to quit trying to play at all! Fingers might actually bleed, as the lyric goes -

I got my first real six string
Bought it at a five and dime
Played it 'til my fingers bled
'Twas the summer of '69

Really? I started with acoustic just because it was cheaper, and haven't ever played an electric before. Acoustic is SUPERHARD :( At least the strings we get here are so tight and the bridge is so high it's almost impossible to play barre chords and stuff without almost breaking the neck of the guitar. I try to play electric guitar riffs that I hear on songs on the acoustic and I always wonder how those guitarists can play anything so smoothely like there's no force needed to push the strings down - can someone tell me exactly how easy/difficult it is? I haven't touched any guitar other than mine before so I'm naive about it....

Thanks for all the tab sites, but lol i need help in the basics first :) Besides the site mentioned by tore above, are there any additional websites to help me get started?
