So is anyone preparing for these tests, if you get through each "round." I hear a lot of people usually don't study for the AMC 12, but then start studying proof writing and some really hard geometry olympiad topics. Well, i think I'm going to do it, but I have to travel to a higher institution about 30 mins away. So, for the people taking the tests, how are you guys prepping. I already heard of the Art of Problem Solving books and series, but I honestly don't have any money for them, so i'll probably borrow books from the public library. How about you guys?

AoPS is worth the money. I qualified for AIME last year, but probably won’t stress too much this year since i’m a senior :p

Thanks for the feedback. And which books did you get?
Also do you have any good ideas for a 16 year old to make money, other than a job.

my son did aops self study and got a 13 on aime
tutor for money…esp math :)

I have both AoPS books and am slowly but surely working through them… our math club at school is also doing some AMC12 prep. I’m a sophomore and really want to qualify for AIME this year, and eventually (dare I say it?) USAMO, although it’s probably not that likely…

I just got Volume 1 and Volume 2. Really all you need to make it to AIME is Volume 1. Volume 2 is if you want to go further.

Umm… tutoring? Parents? Perhaps you can earn money by negotiating a deal, such as extra chores? I’m sure you can convince your parents; after all, it IS for academics.

Does anyone have the AOPS books and can sell them on like Ebay or something. Ill probably buy it if you sell it for a cheap price.

The best way to prep for amc 12/10 is to do old problems (you can find them here: [AMC Problems and Solutions - AoPSWiki](Art of Problem Solving)). The important thing is to go back and make sure you understand how to do the problems you missed.

I don’t think you should do olympiad geo until you have the basics down (Aops books 1/2).

What do you think of buying just one of the AoPS books? Should I buy the first one, or the second one, or would you really recommend buying both? I’m a junior with a strong (Chinese) mathematics background. I’d like to start preparing now, over the summer. I’d like to at least qualify for AIME next year.

@AngEverlasting: Take a practice AMC 12 (from AoPSWiki) under real testing conditions and tell us your score. That should help us determine what you need to study to qualify for the AIME.

I took the test this year, only scored 89.

I plan to take the AMC 12, now that I’m about to become a junior. Although I have a tough courseload with sports and music. I do have AoPS books, though not volume 2. So yeah, I’m in the same boat as you OP, and thanks for yalls advice!

@AngEverlasting: Then you’re borderline for AoPS V2. Do you tend to answer all 1-10 correctly and miss 11-25 (or so), or do you make some mistakes on the easy questions but answer a few 11-25s correctly?

Taking the AMC 12 Problem Series course with AoPS right now
Scores 121.5 on AMC 12 last year but completely bombed AIME TT__TT
Oh, and I also got the AoPS books for reference.

I made a mistake on 1-10, and answered a few 11-25s correctly @DiscipulusBonus

@AngEverlasting: I would suggest purchasing AoPS V2 and taking several practice tests for AMC 12/AIME preparation.
