I'm reading Memoirs of a Geisha right now, and I'm totally transfixed. I just begun, so I haven't gotten that far. Mrs. Fidget disgusts me.

Oh my gawd...if you want a good book, read The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. Best. Book. Ever.

Prep, by Curtis Sittenfeld, was freaking AWESOME. I heart that book, because I can see a lot of myself in the main character [which...isn't, probably, a good thing, but oh well! XD]. Camus' The Stranger is v. worthwhile as well.

Currently I'm reading Dostoevsky's The Adolescent, which is excellent if you're willing to sacrifice an "obvious" plot for philosophical, intriguing passages.

For those who can't stomach more than 300 pages: Dostoevsky and Kinsolver's books are both way long, Dostoevsky mainly because it's a dense peice of work [it's taking me forever, despite the enjoyable nature of it...I'm used to plowing through books in a day or two]. Camus', on the other hand, is a mere 130-some. Kingsolver and Sittenfeld's are very accessible, and therefore can be read quickly despite their length.

You're the first person besides me who proclamed your love for Prep, right on this particular thread.

Yeah, I saw a comment about how it was 'disgusting'. Personally, I think it's truthful to the point of making you realize your own faults [which, I suppose, is why it could be disgusting to someone who can't stomach something like that.] It certainly made me see mine: she's practically my carbon copy in terms of the complete wobbly insecureness of her thoughts sometimes. I think it's something everyone feels...I mean, honestly. Real life is never like those teen novels where the protaganist never feels insecure except to advance the plot. This girl is TRULY insecure, and I think, as HSers, there are scenes in the book where any teenage girl could totally understand. There are also some personal situations that make her life similar to mine, and I ended up putting downt he book feeling oddly as if Sittenfeld had taken my life and put it on paper, with a few tweaks. I even wrote a livejournal entry after I read the book:

Also: Life of Pi is a great book as well. [to the orig post]

Oh makemehappy, good choice. =) We had to read The Poisonwood Bible last year for English about the majority of my class hated it, but I LOVED it. It's told from the point of view of 5 characters, and I thought it was really interesting to see the same events unfold from different perspectives. The characters are all so different that I think anyone can identify with at least one of them... probably more of a girl friendly book, though, at least from the reaction of males in my class.

I forced my best friend to read it and she thought it was interesting but found it very slow. I guess it's a personal opinion, but I think if you are willing to think about the book, you can get a lot of out it. Definitely one of my favorite books I've ever read.
