Excited DS was accepted! I already looked at last year’s euphoric thread on those who got accepted then farther down those same people denied from attending as they either got zero or very little for financial aid.
I encourage everyone to take the time to find scholarships privately, because if last year is any indicator, very few will be getting aid.
Parent here - my son just got accepted. As a parent, I don’t see him going without a merit scholarship. Would not expect much need based aid at a public school. Only 1-2% get merit, so odds aren’t great. I think some private schools with good merit might be a better option. Colorado School of Mines was as generous as I expected - too bad GT isn’t the same.
We wondered too. Mines was generous for my S too. And I was hoping GT would be similar until I read last years threads. What a let down. Takes some of the excitement out of it.
We knew going in to it, small chance of merit. At this point, my son is going for as many competitive scholarships as he can. Just like admissions in general, there appears to be an element of randomness. Did you see students with great stats got rejected/deferred? I feel bad for these 17 and 18 year olds who have worked so hard facing such disappointment. All we can do is remind our kids there is more than one place where they can be successful. Some of my son’s friends have gone through some heartbreaking rejections. My son is not setting sights on one place, so I am glad about that. Hope everything works out for your son! By the way, the big merit from GT, Provost and Presidential candidates, should be out next week, I think.
Thanks:-) Congrats to you again too! I did see the twins in the other thread, one accepted and one deferred and claimed had very similar stats. I thought that was very interesting!
GT is a very good school…but it is a STATE school for GA. It’s mission is to educate GA students…most who are likely going there with HOPE or Zell Miller.
To expect a state school to help OOS students cover the high OOS costs with need-based aid is unreasonable. You don’t pay taxes there. Sure they may hand out some merit to target some students that they want for the school’s own personal reasons, but there are many very high stats kids (including girls) that get NOTHING.
Why do you think they charge high OOS rates? If they were just going to cover their high rates with aid, wouldn’t it be smarter for them just to charge less OOS so they don’t have to wipe out their funds? lol
Oh I understand that. A good friend is struggling with this for Ohio State. I guess the good thing in our case because they accept GI Bill money and husband is military, we can do the paperwork to get instate tuition and use my husbands GI Bill if we want on top of that. This note was mostly meant for other OOS students who were accepted. Don’t sit back and rest on your laurels. Realize only a small percentage of O
OS get aid and the rest had better get digging for some private scholarships to help with the student portion…or to eliminate it all together.
