Anyone received Financial Aid offer yet?

Actually, the new freshman packages I’ve seen here are pretty good compared to those in the past. Keep in mind that UT is a PUBLIC school- you really can’t compare financial aid between public and private schools.

Continuing students are in a tough spot though. Schools may HAVE to cut funding to students already receiving financial aid. The federal SMART and ACG grants have been cut, year-round Pell will probably be discontinued and all Texas-based financial aid is potentially on the chopping block.

The director of student financial services sent current students an email warning of potential cuts and explaining that awarding will be late this year. Here is a similar message from the website: [FINANCIAL AID: Spotlights: For Continuing Students: Your 2011-2012 Financial Aid](http://finaid.utexas.edu/spotlights/aiddelay_110.html)

Did everyone receive their financial aid package?
I havent received mine yet, OSS

Does UT only consider the FAFSA for financial aid? My EFC was 0 because I filed it with my mother, who has primary custody of me and makes under $10,000 a year.

That’s all they look at PioneerJones. However, you will probably not get enough to cover it all without merit scholarships.

The thing is, my noncustodial parent makes more than enough to cover UT’s tuition, but I never had to submit any information about him.

My EFC was 75K, any chance of me being offered anything?

You can get a 5.5k/year stafford loan, and that’s it.

Does UT ever send a financial aid offer summary on paper via mail like most other colleges do? If so, when can I expect it?

They will send a paper letter, but the information is available through “CASH” much earlier (NEVER “Sooner” -Hook’em!). [FINANCIAL AID](http://finaid.utexas.edu/)

If you will be a first-time freshman, the letters will go out very soon (Early April). If you are a continuing college student, it may be July :-(

Budget bill passes House, cuts could cost universities
82nd Legislature
By Melissa Ayala, Daily Texan Staff
Published: Monday, April 4, 2011
House members gathered under the Capitol dome for more than 15 hours Friday and again Sunday to hash out details of the 2012-13 biennium budget, which passed in a 98-49 vote mostly along party lines.

Lawmakers piled on more than 200 amendments to House Bill 1 — several of which attempted to ease the hit to universities and financial aid.

The Senate will vote on their budget version in the coming weeks. Both budgets will then go into a joint committee where members from both chambers will work on one final version.

Outside the Capitol, public interest groups including Texas Impact protesters held a daylong vigil Friday to mourn the “death of state services.”

“Teachers across the state, who equipped themselves to serve the children of the state of Texas are being forced out of the position they love and put on the unemployment line,” said Louis Malfaro, secretary-treasurer of the Texas American Federation of Teachers. “So, today we mourn the death of Texas education.”

Legislators proposed about 73 amendments dealing with education, at least 11 of which attempt to increase financial aid funding.

Lawmakers did not pass any amendments to support TEXAS Grant funding. The original House budget proposes cutting TEXAS grants in half — or by nearly 35,900 from 2011 to 2012 — which would eliminate their availability for incoming students. Several lawmakers spoke passionately about restoring those funds.

Rep. Jason Isaac, R-Dripping Springs, proposed an amendment — which failed — that would have transferred $24 million from the Texas Workforce Commission’s Skills Development Fund into TEXAS Grants and Texas Equalization Grants.

“The TEXAS Grants program has been extremely, extremely slashed in this budget,” Isaac said. “The cuts to the grants are too much, and this is one small way we can help underprivileged families, hardened by economic burdens we are facing in today’s economy. We need kids going to these schools, so we can improve our economies.”

Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, echoed Isaac’s sentiments by asking members to restore funding to financial aid to help students afford college. His amendments, which were shot down, proposed prioritizing TEXAS Grants if the Legislature taps into the Rainy Day Fund, a $9.4 billion emergency fund lawmakers can use during financial difficulties.

“TEXAS Grants is a program that pays dividends,” Villarreal said. “This is a program we created some time ago. We told our high school students that if you take rigorous courses and study hard, graduate high school and pursue college, we will be there for you to help afford college.”

According to one amendment that did pass, authored by Rep. Wayne Christian, R-Center, if universities, such as UT and Texas A&M, can fund Gender and Sexuality Centers that teach about “alternative sexual practices,” they should equally fund “traditional values.”

Christian said his amendment would not infringe on a university’s right to provide alternative sexual practice education, it just expands on what they are required to offer.

“Currently, UT and other schools have a gender and sexuality center for alternative sexual practices. I’m not treading on their right to do that,” he said.

I know I have asked this, but has anyone not received his/her financial aid package yet?

Has anyone gotten an email saying that their FAFSA and financial information have been updated and resent to UT? I’ve been notified of this today, yet I don’t recall personally updating my FAFSA or resending newer financial info to UT.

Bou707, I haven’t received anything yet.

I received a notification of my financial aid awards on my CASH account. Now, when it says I get 7,000 in aid (not including loans) in the fall and 7,000 in the spring, does that mean I get 14,000 for the whole year?

I only got loans so really nothing here.

I still have not recieved my financial aid package, and I’m starting to get worried. Is anyone else in this situation?

Also, does anyone have an estimate about how much aid I should recieve? I’m a first-time freshman, an in-state student, and my EFC was only $1,800.

My tuition is already paid for because I graduated valedictorian, but I still need about $12,500 to cover housing for the year.

You’re not alone. I’m current freshman; about to be sophomore and I’m still waiting…plus I’m going to summer school so I need it fast!

I think my EFC was a little higher than that last year and I got more than enough finaid to cover for housing. You should be well off…hopefully…there’s all these budget cuts supposedly affecting the higher education budget. But anyway, congrats on getting valedictorian!

Can you see your financial aid without accepting to go to the University?

My problem is that I am an out of state transfer that got accepted, but I’m not sure I will be able to go unless I get financial aid. My EFC is 01907 or about 3600 a year? I just hope I get something because I want to go to this school more than anything.

I got a 9,000 dollar grant to go to Montana for the year.

@ Lindsiria You have to be accepted to UT first before you can even check financial aid, they usually process it once you give a call as soon as your accepted. Thats what I did.

Ya, all it took was 1 day for my financial aid to be offered when I got accepted to UT. Got plenty for summer school but was short for both fall & spring. Had 0000 EFC since I’m dependent but it still didn’t cover the whole cost. Have plans to work during the summer.

Anyhow, most of you should have been offered something already, if not, call asap.

i prolly don’t belong in here since i’m going to UTSA (CAP) but i’mma post mine anyway since it sucks.

as a background, my EFC is 23171 and my COA is $21,721, meaning my need is -$1,450. yeah, it says i have negative need, lmao.

Financial Aid Award Fall 2011 - Spring 2012

Roadrunner Scholarship $1,000
Parent PLUS Loan $8,000
Direct Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan $5,500
Total $14,500

the only outside scholarship i know of atm is a $1,000 scholarship from my district. i don’t know how much my parents saved up, but say they have $5,000. that’s $7,000 covered for my first year. i’ll still need the $13,500 in loans plus another $1,000 from somewhere else.

i’m so disappointed. my parents like to blame me for not getting any scholarships. but 1 - yes i messed up a bit in school, but not enough to not get many ANY kind of aid; and 2 - need-based scholarships and grants? yeah, efc’s too high to get those.

my efc is only so high as of last year because my mom worked like a maniac and received her nursing license the previous year. any other year i would’ve probably qualified for a pell grant.

the loans suck but not horribly, the main thing that bums me out is that my parents want me to have as little “loanage” as possible so if i don’t get a significant amount in scholarships, no living on campus. which is what i REALLY want to do my first year, especially since UTSA’s dorms (chaparral/laurel anyway) > UT’s dorms, apparently.

good for y’all that got decent packages though, i hope you manage to pay for your year without owing an arm and a leg to the government!
