Anyone wanna help a brother out ?

I'm a high school senior and I was wondering what my chances of admissions were at:

Columbia Cornell Upenn Harvard Princeton Vanderbilt U Texas Texas A&M University of Toronto, McGill, University of British Columbia
The thing is I moved to the states from Canada beginning of my junior year, so my GPA and grades, do not match together so I am unranked. However my GPA is a 3.8 out of 4

My credentials are:

2010 SAT I score ( 710 Cr,650 math, 650 writing)
SAT II scores: (650 Biology 680 Math I 640 English literature)
Ap courses taken/taking
Junior year:
Ap Bio (scored a 3)
Ap Eng (scored a 3)
Senior year
Ap Chem
Ap Eng
Ap Physics B
Ap Econ
Ap Psychology
Ap Gov
Ap World history

Extra curricular:
Volunteered at a retirement home ( 20 hours)
Greater lewisville cares ( volunteer organization 10 hours)
Member of both Key club and Multicultural club
Basketball team and track team (won awards in both)
Conducted research at University lab ( 50+ hours)
Tutor freshman in my school in Math and Biology( 14 hours)

I'm also black and live in a single parent home with 2 brothers, I am to be blunt, poor and have written about so in my college essay ( living in shelter) I also am getting a letter of recommendation from the Professor who I did research with and he is an Alum of Cornell.
I really appreciate any input, Thanks!

Harvard, Princeton and Columbia put a strong emphasis on test scores. I’d say your scores (more so for subject tests than sat 1 scores) are low for the colleges. The question is, are you a top student at your school? As far as extracurriculars go is that hours per week or total hours? Is your participation in these extracurriculars substantial, do you show passion (these are things I would ask myself)?
Are you busy working/and or taking care of siblings? Is that why you couldn’t do a lot of extracurriculars? Be sure to explain, your situation. Did the move from Canada put you at a disadvantage for doing substantial things in your school?

Be careful with the essays, you want to give admissions officers a reason to accept you not whine to them (not saying that you did this, you probably didn’t just some caution)

How long were you in a shelter?

I think if you really showcase your experiences and what perspectives you can bring to the school, then you’re good.

Also, what kind of school do you come from? Is it competitive do people have high scores etc.
How do you fare within the context of your school (are you a big fish in a small pond, or just about average )?

So here is my evaluation of the competitiveness of your application

SAT Scores/GPA-probably won’t be the reason you don’t get in somewhere, especially if it is competitive for you school (ie much higher than the average). If your sat scores are top for you school then I’d classify you as “academically qualified”. So i’m sure officers would look at your subjective info

AP Scores–Is that high for your school, do most people just get threes or are there a lot of poeple with fours and fives. If the score is high for your school then you’re fine
Seems like you have a heavy courseload so rigor is fine

Extracurriculars-These are lacking; but are there circumstances that prevent you from being heavily involved in things? How many hours a week are you devoted to outside of school things

I’d say you’re in UT and texas a&m, the rest of the American colleges are an uphill battle but if you showcase your circumstances well , then I wouldn’t call it impossible.

BUT what do I know? I’m only a high school senior going through the same process you are.

I wish you luck-do not be discouraged by other peoples stats on CC.Have you read a thread called Lessons learned this admissions cycle?you should read it,it will inspire you…best wishes.

hmm, actually I’ll change my evaluation a little bit. I think you’ve got a fair shot at all the schools.

Are you uninvolved in some ecs because of the move or you need to take care of your younger brothers? if this is the case, make sure you put that on your application.

I applaud you for overcoming those struggles. I think you really sell yourself on the app, I think you have a nice shot.

I’m rooting for you! :)

Thanks for the responses! I actually just read the thread, it was very motivating. xdancingatdiscos Good luck on your apps as well, and if you’re a highschool senior good luck as well macmill :)
