Prompt: Is the world changing for the better?

Human society is constantly changing. These changes can sometimes better the world or sometimes worsen it. However, what many "progress" can actually be something that changes the world for the worse. Many of today's advancements, from the atomic bomb, to the rise of smartphones, to the production of food demonstrate that the world is not changing for the better.
The atomic bomb was created in the 1940s and has since spawned the proliferation of nuclear weapons around the world, leading to increased instability in international relations and defence. What was once credited with ending World War II now creates many difficult situations. The sheer destructive power of a nuclear bomb tempts many countries to develop one in the interest of their own self-preservation, despite the objection of other countries. These circumstances strain the relationship between many countries. For example, Iran and North Korea are constantly condemed by the United Nations for illegaly enriching uranium. These states could potentially start a nuclear war or allow terrorists to access their weapons. These very real threats caused by the advancements in nuclear technology typify the adverse effects that often result from changes in the world. These changes can be powerful enough to threaten the stability of the planet, thus changing the world for the worse.
On a less extreme scale, the change in the way humans communicate also demonstrates the negative consequences that stem from technological breakthroughs. The prevalence of smartphones in today's society degrades the overall quality of interaction between people and invades the privacy of many. According the Pew Research Center, more than 90% of people under 30 check their smartphone every five minutes. Their research also suggests that people would rather send a text than have a face to face conversation. Despite the convenience smartphones bring, many psychologists have proven that relationships are weakened by too much virtual contact. Furthermore, the constant tracking of people's data through these phones presents a real danger to privacy, as many companies can track unknowing consumers and use their information to manipulate the market. As smartphones become more and more popular, the world will continue to evolve into one where people no longer have face-to-face conversations and no sense of privacy.
Finally, the change in the methods of food production created many adverse effects. The use of pesticides and fertilizers poses many dangers to today's people. Additionally, the lack of nutrients in today's soil leads to a decreased nutritional quality in today's food. Though there is more food being produced, the benefits people gain from it are much less considerable. Thus, this change in food production proves that the world is indeed, changing for the worse.
