Hi, My son is at grade 11 and just got accepted for EPGY Summer Institutes. I am hoping this admission could help him get into the college next year. ?
On their website said:
"Will this program help me get into Stanford?
The Stanford University Undergraduate Admissions office is familiar with the Summer Institutes programs and the academic rigor required of students participating in EPGY courses. However, admission to EPGY does not guarantee admission to Stanford University."

Does anyone here got college acceptance was in that program?
Does anyone here got rejected was also in that program?

Just want to chance my son's possibility for college next year.
BTW, so far he's got 2400 in SAT I( in first try) , 4/4 GPAs, working on SAT II and a few APs. What I am worrying about is we are Asian-Canadian, they count as international -- far lower acceptance rate, right?

To avoid sheer speculation, try gathering data from other people who were accepted to EPGY. All I can tell you is that Stanford sent me [international] a package to apply. I couldn't afford it, but I was eventually accepted to Stanford UG itself.

But then again, using only what you quoted, consider that
1. Stanford may take interest into account, especially in these years of rough yield, and
2. they speak only of rigor. Stanford UG Admissions might as well be familiar with RPI or IMO or [insert here]. The claim in and of itself is neutral except insofar as either RPI and IMO are many persons' tickets to university entrance. Of course, this is speculation.

hey i went to EPGY in the summer of 2007....ive just been waitlisted at stanford....but 2 people that where taking my class were admitted....EPGY is great btw, your son will learn A LOT, meet great people and have an amazing time.....his grades and SATs definatly put him in the runnining for stanford he has a great shot, BUT they are NOT everything, i know MANY 2370+ on the SAT that where outright rejected, i have a 2200 and i was waitlisted.....i think that the essays are EXTREEMLY important at stanford and i think that my essays are the only reason i was waitlisted (i took a huge risk and was making jokes in my essays and telling the addcom things i probably shouldnt have, but i guess they apreciated it)....in short EPGY definatly helps, and if your son writes good essays then he definatly has a great shot of getting in!! good luck!

My D went to EPGY after her sophomore year. She did not apply to Stanford, so I can't comment on whether it would have increased her chances there, but she was accepted to her first choice Ivy.

The EPGY experience was incredible. She took a Humanities course which involved a lot of critical reading and writing. The improvement in her writing, evidenced in her Junior year AP History and English classes, was tremendous. Additionally, she was very inspired by the other students and their commitment to academic excellence (really!!!) and decided to pursue admission to very strong schools to try and reproduce this community and experience in college.

Maybe a look at the Stanford Application (not EPGY app, but the one for University) will show you if there is a space to talk about attending EPGY, or a way for an admissions officer to cross-reference a student's EPGY performance. My d received a page long assessment of her work at EPGY, but no grade was given. It would be interesting to know if Stanford admissions follows up on students who talk about EPGY on their Stanford applications.

The Common Application, which most (all?) of the Ivies use, doesn't offer much opportunity to talk about classes like EPGY. The student would have to use up part of an essay to work it in, if they wished to reference it at all. There is a small space for extra courses, but no place to expand on the course content, how long it lasted, or the student's performance in the class.

EPGY is expensive, but worthwhile, in my opinion. It may not result in any direct advantage in admissions, but the indirect benefit of spending several weeks in a challenging academic environment with like-minded teenagers may pay off in the long run.

i went to epgy this past summer and had the time of my life. many of the students there applied to stanford and only one got in that i know of. so no it has virtually no affect on your chances of admission :( nonetheless, it is a great program and i highly recommend it.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and expriences
"received a page long assessment " -- it's good to know that EPGY offer such good assessment paper

i also developed a personal relationship with my instructor and we still keep in touch. she wrote me an excellent letter of recommendation and is helping me in along in the college admissions process.

I'm a junior and will be going to epgy this summer. Hopefully, I'll develop a great relationship with my instructor like you guys did! [I really want to go to stanford..]
also. what about epgy makes it so great? I've heard a lot of people say this..but I want to know more :)
also. Just wondering what course did you guys take? ie is it easier to become closer to your instructor depending on your course?

OP, like all activities, your son should decide whether or not to do EPGY based on the merits of the program, not based on whether it will help him get into Stanford.

juju, in response to your last question, some instructors definitely get to know their students pretty well. The relativity/quantum instructor that I worked with last summer is well beloved by his students year after year.

I think the acceptance rate is above 90%. They would let you wait first If you applied late, but you would get in eventually. They care more about money.

acceptance into EPGY depends on the subject
for bioscience and biotechnology, its usually around 25%, but for the humanities and math subjects its somewhere close to 100%

My son goes to Stanford. He was a teaching assistant/counselor for two summers with EPGY. You will have a great time at this program and learn something as well. However it will not help you get into Stanford. My son kept in touch with almost all of his students by email and facebook. Out of about 30 students that applied to Stanford and he kept in contact with, only two got accepted. This tells you EPGY does not gain any advantage for students and it also tells you it is not so easy to get accepted in general.
The only way it might help is if you wrote your admissions essay about something in EPGY that motivated you to continue research on a subject. However, I would not recommend this as a topic unless you could write about something substantial you did as a follow-up to EPGY.

Go to EPGY because you think you will enjoy it, not because your parents think it will help you get into Stanford.
