Anyone who has done really well on the Essay...

Did you write about personal experiences? If you did, how many did you use and what else did you use to back you up (ex: literature, history, etc.; you don't have to be specific)? Lastly, what did you score on your essay?

i twelved it and used three personal experiences. also, make sure you take a look at the essays in the blue book to see what the CB rewards and what it doesn't.

What is this 'blue book' that everyone keeps talking about? I must be really behind haha

haha. it's the college board's official sat book--the only available printed source of real SAT questions. almost everybody uses it because it's the genuine article.

isbn 0-87447-718-2.

you can order it on amazon.com or get it from any huge bookstore. among other things, it contains examples of essays with scores. you'll note that the essays don't actually seem to be scored according to the rubric :)

damn 3 personal is a lot, but i guess the graders don't really care.

I got an 11, and i used 1 historical, 1 lit, 1 personal

Honeslty, i got a 9 in march, and all i did this time was rush and fit another paragraph in (5 total). If you want to score well, make sure you get 5 body paragrpahs in, or at least fill both pages completely. It'll definitely help. Don't worry about having generic examples, and don't go out of your way to use big vocab. Just write naturally and you should be fine

Hi, I got a 11 simply using 2 personal examples (COMPLETELY made up of course lol). I should add I wrote 1 3/4 pages which included my intro, 2 body paras, and a 2 sentence conclusion. While length surely works to your advantage, always remember that quality, imo, bears stronger in the minds of the readers. I think it would be worthwhile for you to check out this thread

Good luck!

i got a 12 and had two examples, one about al gore and his passions and one about the constituion and the pursuit of happiness. those were paired together with a strong opening and strong conclusion.

if you want i can type it up but thats only if you really want..lol

Sratman1011 - I really would like to read your essay. It would be a big help. Thank you!

i think you can just link the collegeboard scanned version to save you sometime!

If you could send me your essay, I'd love to read it too

I got an 11/12 and a 790:

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below:

Many people deny that stories about characters and events that are not real can teach us about ourselves or about the world around us. They claim that literature does not offer us worthwhile information about the real world. These people argue that the feelings and ideas we gain from books and stories obstruct, rather than contribute to, clear thought. Adapted from Jennifer L. McMahon, "The Function of Fiction"

Assignment: Can books and stories about characters and events that are not real teach us anything useful? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Azure your essay was very good in my opinion. I thought the prompt allowed a range of essays that could be written.

I had the happiness essay prompt which IMO really limited any sort of diversity in the essays. I got an 8 and I deserved it but I think I could have aced a 12 on a prompt like Azure's.

Actually, don't get me wrong. Happiness is a universal emotion but it is limited in scope in terms of writing such as writing a 2 page essay on the color "gray".

12/12 - 1.5 pages - incomplete conclusion

My essay topic was on whether or not hardships helped. Used 2 literary examples because I've always thought personal examples were supposed to be filler and ran out of time to add one. :/

11/12 - filled up both pages - 4 paragraphs (800 on writing, overall).

The prompt:
ESSAY PROMPT
Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below:

It is easy to imagine that events and experiences in our lives will be perfect, but no matter how good something turns out to be, it can never live up to our expectations. Reality never matches our imaginations. For that reason, we should make sure our plans and goals are modest and attainable. We are much better off when reality surpasses our expectations and something turns out better than we thought it would. Adapted from Baltasar Gracian y Morales, The Art of Worldly Wisdom

Assignment: Is it best to have low expectations and to set goals we are sure of achieving? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

I wrote about Stanely Kubrick's film, 2001: A Space Odyssey and my own personal experience.

I doubt anyone needs another essay still. If you do, I could type it, but I don't have any other options to show it to you.

make it a full two pages and your guaranteed nothing lower than a 10.

two full pages + book example and a famous quote = 11/12

Haha I wrote 2 pages, book example, etc... I only got a 9 so that definitely isn't the only thing.

^ well then your essay must have been horrible...let me revise

2 full pages + book example and famous quote - crap and mistakes = 11/12

Haha it wasn't perfect, but no ones is. A 9 is not 'horrible' anyway, it's pretty close to a 10. And the length thing isn't necessarily true because I know people who have only went a little onto the next page and still have gotten 12s.

i used stuff from AP euro and about darwinism.
