Dad got laid off for the 2nd time this year and i'm looking for a loan. Has anyone gone through financial aid/Sallie Mae and got a loan? What should I be doing, we're pretty clueless here.

We haven't done anything except the loans offered by financial aid. I would suggest calling the financial aid department on Monday, explaining the situation, and seeing if they have any ideas. I would think the FA dept. would know what is available, and which loans are better than others.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I hope he can get back to work soon. It must be really frustrating and difficult for the whole family.

For the ones through financial aid: I just signed the promissary note for both the Perkins and the Stafford ones. How do I make sure that I get the money, is there any other steps other than signing the promissary notes?

That should be all you need to do. Did you also go the page that says "Accept/Decline Financial Aid" and hit "accept" and "submit" ? I think that's the only other thing needed. I just went and did that again for my son since he had an additional $500 in grant money added on from the IU Foundation scholarships he applied for this year. (not much, but every little bit helps. Be sure to apply for these next year--due March 1, I believe.)

Okay, will do. I hit submit and under the anticipated aid it says it's "credited". Thank you!

when does the foundation application come out?

hey susantm do you know when the private loan is credited to the account so that the balance (total balance) is lower and reflects the credited amount? my sallie mae loan was disbursed to indiana yesterday and on my bill it shows that it is credited but the total amount due is still the same, im worrying about this because the bill is due by august 10 and im waiting for that loan amount to be reflected in the bill so i can finaly pay whatever is left over.

Dcho how did you do the private loan? Did you just go to Sallie Mae and get one? Is that the lowest rate/best lender? I know they have a partnership with IU. Did you do the parent plus loan?

Dcho711, I think they only update the bill once a month. Were you planning to pay it all at once? We have always paid monthly, so it would just mean a lower bill the next month. You might call financial aid--or email, but that takes longer--and ask about it. We haven't used private loans, so I don't know exactly how that works.

The IU Foundation Scholarship application comes out December 1. Here is the website to bookmark for later reference: http://iuf.indiana.edu/About_IUF/Scholarships/IU_Foundation_Schola.html .

i dont think it matters all that much who the lender is, its more important how good ( creditworthy) your cosigner is. i didnt do the parent plus loan, i plan to take care of my own debt :)

yea i was hoping to pay whatever i have to pay for 1st semester one time and then pay whatever balance i have for 2nd semester a 2nd time.

What are the requirements for Grant Money? Is it based on income? How do you apply?

Freshmom, some grant money is given out when students apply for admission and are based on merit. The IU Foundation scholarships have different criteria. Some are based on need, some on being involved at IU, some on grades; most have more than one criteria. You can find out more at the link above.

Wolves, I'm sorry to hear about this and hope your dad finds work soon. You still may want to call the Financial office as Susan suggested (if you haven't already) to tell them of the change in your situation and to ask if there's any more money to be found. Good luck.

I found a form online that you fill out asking for a FAFSA reconsideration. So we'll see how it goes, didn't submit it yet. Sold an extra car for the first payment that no one was using.
