anything but "chances": short answers to short questions

Hello, future Violets! MAP here.

Since I'm bored, I'm stealing this idea from the UC boards. They had a thread that had short answers to short questions that are too small to make a whole thread about, but that people HAD to know.

So I'm throwing it out there. Ask me anything you want about NYU and NYC. As the thread says, anything BUT "chances" posts. You can even ask silly questions. I guess this is a "grab bag" thread.

Good luck to everyone applying now!

Just how amazing is NYU? lol

(900th post lol)

congrats! somehow i joined way earlier than you and i’m still at 893. :-P

NYU is a very polarizing school. you either LOVE it or you HATE it and it’s totally not for you. i’m absolutely in love with it (obviously) and i think it was the most perfect match for me. yeah, it’s not all sunshine and roses 24/7 and there are things wrong with NYU, but i can’t imagine myself at any other school for my undergrad.

one of the things we discussed in SRC training is the fact that for almost half of the potential applicants to NYU, the campus visit is the “tipping point”. if they were on the fence about NYU before, actually stepping onto our “in and of the city” campus clinches it.

i love my program, i feel supported by faculty and i’m doing research in fields that i wouldn’t be able to do at the other schools i was considering. just having NYU on my resume has opened doors in the media world for me. i’m involved in activities and i have a lot of school spirit. the study abroad program is run very well and NYU in Paris was also amazing.

i’m pretty much a Violet for life. heh.

What was your freshman dorm? How did you like it? Which would you say is the best dorm- most convenient, best food, most ‘social?’
^ that’s how much of a dork I am: already thinking about dorms!

that wasn’t a short question was it…

You mentioned your program. What do you study? I’m just curious.

organic, if I remember correctly MAP was a transfer student to NYU.

@organic i was a transfer, but i stayed in Goddard for a summer and found it nice. no dining hall, but you’re within walking distance of Hayden and Weinstein. the rooms were ridiculously tiny, but i had a view of the park. then again, i didn’t stay there for a year.

@ohboi

i’m in media, culture, communications in Steinhardt.

I’ve visited twice already (I’ll be applying this year), and I love the city and all NYU has to offer academically. The thing I’m most scared of is the partying. I’m not into partying or drinking (I’m not totally boring, though!), and I really don’t want to feel left out/lonely, especially because I’m not INCREDIBLY social. I know NYU is “in and of the city”, so there will be lots to do, but I also don’t want to be part of a non-drinking minority. So: how heavy is the emphasis on partying? This will probably be the difference between applying early/regular, since a big factor in my decision is social life.

This question has probably been asked/hinted at, but I have yet to find a solid answer. Thanks. :)

^I second that question because he/she sounds like me except I am really social at time (sometimes not so much), but I’m not into the drinking thing.

^ Hey you guys sound like me too! I am not into pot or drinking, so will I be left out?

you can find people that don’t drink. the first week here is INCREDIBLY misleading because everyone feels the need to drink to excess because “whoo hoo i’m in college!” there are people who don’t drink, and there are parties without alcohol. everyone tends to settle into their true personalities without all of the posturing or trying to look cool.

the only thing is, because we don’t have a ton of inherent school spirit (no stadium to dress up and go to every weekend, etc.) you have to be more pro-active about finding friends. you have to be outgoing and willing to be involved in things, because NYU won’t twist your arm. it’s easy to get “lost in the crowd”, so to speak.

Does NYU offer good amounts of financial aid and is there a group or club incolving chorus or choir of some sort?

a) our financial aid is among the worst in the country. seriously. even Princeton Review agrees.
b) there’s a number of singing groups and i think there might be choirs in Tisch and Steinhardt that non-majors can audition for.

What are the opportunities to work out like? I know you don’t really have a campus to run/bike around, so what are the gyms like?

how bad is the financial aid packet?
will i be paying off loans till like im 30?

Why IS the financial aid so particularly bad at NYU? And what does one have to do to actually get their way paid? Is it impossible? I would really be in need of aid if I got in there…

P.S. at many of the above posters, I’m right there with you in the non-drinking/non-drugs category! high-five Maybe if we all get in, we should form some kind of group about that very thing: partying/having a good time for those who don’t want to do all the typical, drinking/partying. :)

@Eiffel
I’m all for that. lol

@missamericanpie
Do you know about any of the non-Tisch theater groups? Are they any good?

@eiffel

i really have no idea. i know it only got worse after the financial meltdown and the Madoff scandal; NYU lost something like 25 million dollars after that was all said and done.

financial aid is a touchy topic here at NYU. i won’t go into specifics, considering i have a full-ride, but here’s an article from our school paper that shows how raw the issue is for students:

http://nyulocal.com/on-campus/2009/04/30/nyu-admin-maybe-think-twice-about-going-to-our-ridiculously-expensive-school/

@ohboi

i don’t know anyone in those groups, sorry.

@bm

the gyms are AMAZING. they’re really modern and there’s pools, a rooftop track, two rockclimbing walls and recreation classes as well as intramurals. check nyu.edu/athletics.

How did you get the full ride? D is very interested in NYC and NYU’s international affairs program…BUT I am a single parent with another child and financial aid is a must. D is ranked near the top of her public school class and one of the 2007 grads is attending NYU right now, but his folks have big bucks. How do we decide whether she can/should apply?
SORRY SO LONG!!!
